Does anyone remember Handbag.com

It was probably early to mid 2000s? It was an online women's magazine site but most people used the forums? It was such a busy place, much like mumsnet with a variety of discussions. I used to love the personalised avatars (which helped recognise posters straight away) and enjoyed whiling away the hours at work on there even making some friends. This was all before social media so was my go to. Not sure why it died a death, it went from being a thriving women's chat site to being completely dead and now long gone. I wonder if there are any old handbaggers on here? ;)

@purplepandas

Oh yes, remember handbag. I was a damsel, spent many years on there, good times and bad. Any other damsels here?
Me!! But I can’t remember my old username 🤣

Aww Handbag!

I remember MeganChips from there, we used to call you smeggy dips! I had an avater with a spider crawling in and out of a toilet. Loved it there, then ModestyBlaise took over, went power mad and it all went down the loo.

I used to love their London meets, they were great fun.

Rina66 · 23/10/2020 13:54

I was a handbagger! Loved it, just reading about what everyone was wearing everyday and I bought loads based on peoples recommendations. There was a really brilliant poster who had designer handbags and watches and wore some gorgeous outfits, not designer, more French Connection price point. I loved her posts and yes it was a really friendly place.....but that was when chatting on line to strangers was all in its infancy and the anonymity aspect wasn’t being exploited by the angry people who IRL wouldn’t say boo to a goose 😂

onemouseplace · 23/10/2020 13:59

Handbag totally got me into posting on forums - and here I still am, 20 years later Grin

ChillerKillerCroissant · 23/10/2020 14:13

I was never on Handbag, but I was on Damsels which was fun. People on there used to refer to Handbag a lot.

justanotherneighinparadise · 23/10/2020 14:30

Lady Muck that’s one of the names I remember!! She was riotous 💃

It was slightly before my time, but didn't Blaise pretend to be a women when he took over? That got people's backs up I remember.

I wasn't on damsels. I liked webgirl though and the whole Chelsey Harvey Alfie tattoo thing ended up spanning over 5 forums I think. Everyone knew about damsels then.

CleverCatty · 23/10/2020 14:35

yes it was quite good for it's time

onemouseplace · 23/10/2020 14:44

@gamerchick Yes! Didn't ModestyBlaise get caught out pretending to been a teen girl on another forum he was managing?

onemouseplace · 23/10/2020 14:44

And @Spidey66 I remember you (and your avatar!).

samandpoppysmummy · 23/10/2020 14:45

I loved handbag and charlotte street, I used to spend hours on them when I was meant to be working 😁

FallonsTeaRoom · 23/10/2020 14:45

I remember handbag.com and ivillage. Posters on ivillage really helped me when my marriage broke down and I was made redundant at the same time.

KittyMcKitty · 23/10/2020 14:48
@MeganChips I loved Damsels too.
I loved Damsels! I wonder what Damzella is up to now?

I don't know, I joined when people were still mad at him.

That's creepy though. Confused

RussetandGold · 23/10/2020 14:53

CharlotteStreet is a blast from the past. I was on there! Does anyone remember Mornev?

Amortentia · 23/10/2020 15:05

Loved handbag, there were some cracking threads and bun fights. Damsels was good too, anyone remember the Mock Turtle splinter group from Handbag?

feesh · 23/10/2020 15:07

I was on there too. I vaguely remember a few names - Lily someone? And PunkGirl - was she the one who was OBSESSED with someone from Bargain Hunt?!

Pimplemouseish · 23/10/2020 15:08

Do you remember how urban75 used to be?

Squirrelblanket · 23/10/2020 15:11

I loved handbag, Damsels and ivillage.

What a blast from the past! Smile

gamerchick · 23/10/2020 15:20

I think tmt is still going. Looks like a canny group of people last time I had a look.

Spidey66 · 23/10/2020 15:27

@onemouseplace What was your user name?

Modesty definitely let on they were female, and I think there was a teens version of HB where he oohhed and aaahhed teenage girl style over Daniel Radcliffe in the early HP films.

I was a mod at one point, but threw in the towel at what we were expected to do, which was basically turn in those we'd developed relationships with over minor reasons like swearing. Certain 'baggers loved that though. Redsparklyshoes for instance was lovely when she was a run of the mill bagger. She became a bit of a little Hitler when she was made a mod though.

There was some clearly very troubled people there. I won't go into details as it was a long time ago, but yes sometimes it was painful to watch.

I used to look at Damsels sometimes and remember Chelsea Harvey and her Alfie/Alife tattoo. I did laugh, but actually I was very, very fond of her. She was as daft as a brush, but had a terrific ability to laugh at her daftness. She was basically i think very kind-sometimes people would poke fun at her on other forums, but I don't remember an ounce of badness from her, and both her and her husband gave me the impression of being very hardworking, honest people.

Spidey66 · 23/10/2020 15:29

I was on TMT for a long time as well, though only occasionally look at it now.

MarriedtoDaveGrohl · 23/10/2020 15:32

Haha another ex handbagger too! Got a bit too addicted.. I had the cutest little jumping sheep avatar 😁

gamerchick · 23/10/2020 15:35

She was a good sport about that definitely and you could tell she was devoted to her family. The cubin lounge? Made taking the Mick out of her a sport I think.

I remember the Stewart incident who used to he a mod and took to asking for relationship advice in the bedroom. PMs flowed giving him sex tips.

Handbag was a bit of a training ground for creepy blokes thinking about it.

DominaShantotto · 23/10/2020 15:42

I did actually meet Stewart, and Space Cowboy and a lot of them whose names I've long since forgotten.

Stewart was pretty much exactly as he came across as - well intentioned but a bit of a very square peg not fitting in a round hole at all.
