Quite quite bizarre, though covered in the Telegraph at the time, as the report is apparently produced by a recognised consulting firm.

The some of the activity on here, at the point when MC first came into being was very odd. I post a lot, but carefully/respectfully, and was shocked to find myself under attack. I know others felt MN should have protected them more.

I took a longer view, guessing that MN itself was under pressure, and trusting that they were making the calls they needed to make in order to stay open. I felt that life would not be any easier for the MC administrators.

I suspect I was right. People, whoever they are (patriarchs, Russians, stans, the Christian far right, the LibDems...add as you want) don’t seem to want women to have a voice. MN, though no perfect, is still standing.

It is very strange. 100 years ago women got the vote. It feels as if we have not advanced much since then.

(I apologise to everyone else for my language in advance) You are talking fucking shit!!! 😡 It was a 2 second clip of a tiny octopus on a plate, presumably in Asia. It was disgusting but I am not so naive to think these things don't go on in the world. It IS the norm in some countries.

Yes. In every part of the world it is the norm to eat all sorts of creatures not eaten elsewhere. In some parts of the world, animal welfare is not as it should be. It is not being racist to say so.

I do agree with lots in your post to me at 18.03. Believe me, I know I'm banging on about this, I know that very well. And I suppose it's because it's a relief to be able to, after me, along with others, had to suffer in silence. It's cathartic, I was sick to death of taking it on the chin, carrying on as normal, and me seeing what was happening increasing.

Of course, we do all have to move on and within me saying that 24hrs ago, I'm not! If the thread went dead, of course I would.
It just rankled with me when I tried to explain something about how I didn't condemn every poster and why the two most prominent threads took over on there, and it was treated as a joke. I was taking a post seriously and answering in a measured way, i just didn't get the same back. Hey ho, doesn't matter now.

No poster who was there and not involved in racism or spamming should be worried about posting anywhere on MN for fear of retaliation, as far as I'm concerned. That makes us reasonable posters as bad as the worst. Live and let live and let's move on.

However, there were three particular posters who I hope to God aren't here. They were horrendous to me, baiting me was a sport to them, and if I find they are here I will be leaving MN because I cannot be on a forum with them. I imagine they are banned from here, at least I hope so.

I know that. They had no choice. The spamming to get posters over there was beyond a joke. Besides which it would've been awful to be retaliating against the daily stuff tit for tat... it's now gone and MN has decided that posters can have their say. I feel we're entitled to. That is fair enough.

I've said it probably 10 times on this thread. I have no beef with those who pottered about on the innocuous threads there, we can all get along, let's work towards that. I said from Day One I felt for them because it's been spoilt for them. I wish posters wouldn't keep saying that everyone's labelling everyone as racist because that is untrue.

I ignored that poster after that picture, not that I took much notice before as he thought he was a lot funnier than he was, churning out the same tired jokes and I admit I thought it was odd that he was even on there (he is also on here from what I remember). I agreed with the poster who did call that out. That is as far as I went.

I agree completely. I didn’t see the Minstrels picture at the time and everyone who did should have called him out on it. The person who posted it has always made me feel uncomfortable.

You shouldn’t have to leave but if they are identified and they are here, they should be forced to leave.

@Roussette if those posters do turn up (and, if they're the ones I'm thinking of, they may) please report them. I'm pretty sure MNHQ will deal with them. I know they've shown a couple of PBPs the door already.

I was on MC. I got linked to it from the HaM threads here I continued to use MN also and have never been banned. I liked being able to read the HaM discussions on MC without finding half the posts deleted or the whole thread vanishing as I was reading. I also liked that I could express an opinion on their behaviour without worry (their conduct both his and hers and speculate on things like whether she provided diaries for FF or whether he had a diplomatic visa etc / nothing too controversial I don’t think). I found the HaM threads here tedious with accusations of racism if you don’t love everything they did. I only ever looked on that thread on MC. I didn’t find it racist at all. I never used any other thread nor saw in “latest” (always went directly to my watched thread).

However, I did get fed up with posters on the MC HaM thread continually dragging discussions back to MN. I do believe MNHQ were moderating the HaM threads poorly and had no problem with that being discussed as a general point. I didn’t agree with discussing Michael himself as I felt he was only doing a job and any critique of the moderation over here should have been at a “cooperate” MNHQ level not at an individual moderator level. I also felt that naming individual posters wasn’t right. I DID post that I felt this shouldn’t be done and many posters agreed with me. This was a good few weeks ago. I found in the last week or so it was becoming worse and worse for MN discussion and particularly naming posters and c&p. For my part I skimmed over those posts. In hindsight I should have spoken out against them again I suppose. I wouldn’t stay quiet in real life so I suppose I shouldn’t have in the forum either. It was getting OTT with discussion of MN. I felt we’d have been better ignoring and focusing on our own discussions.

Having said that I think a few of the posters on here are not being all together genuine with their own “messaging” and are somewhat twisting things so it’s all rather one sided. There were faults on both sides in regards to the HaM threads with some of these posters complaining now being the very ones that “drove” us off the HaM threads in the first place.

Having read this thread I didn’t recognise the racist forum MC was made out to be. I witnessed none myself. I have since read some of the Justine thread which i was quite shocked by more in terms of the general tone and the constant referral to MN threads. I’d never looked there before and I might have changed my opinion of MC if I had.

Which brings me to conclude

(1) can users really be expected to know a whole forum? Know what’s being posted and that somethings just aren’t nice? I’m sure there is plenty on MN that’s quite nasty too. Does that mean every signal poster is responsible for it? I don’t think so

(2) how much responsibility should we have for “calling out” behaviour that’s not what we agree with? This for me is something I’m thinking a lot about now. I didn’t join in the MN linking people naming individual posters and did stated I didn’t think it should be done but it continued. Perhaps I should have done more. I think I preferred to ignore the “drama”

(3) why is any of this being taken so seriously? These are anonymous forums not real life. I never understood the need for the continually MN chat over on MC HaM thread (and now I see it was even worse on the Justine thread!) I mean you weren’t on MN why keep focussing on it?! And now I’m not sure why we need a 33 page thread on MN about MC? It’s all just a little silly to me. I also didn’t feel the need to stick to just one forum. I’ll post and read multiple forums they all add something different to my life and I didn’t feel loyal to one or other place. They are anonymous forums!! If you click and make friend in RL all very good but for most part we are all strangers even if you feel you “know” a person we really really don’t.

@Roussette I do think the constant naming of you and discussion of your posts etc etc was very very OTT (some others were more aggressive than you on the MN HaM threads so I have a little less sympathy for them but you seemed just fine to me although I didn’t share most of your opinions re HaM). As I said above I did post on MC that it wasn’t right naming individual posters. That was a whole back. I’m sorry for not posting again more recently and choosing to just ignore those type of posts rather than stand up and express my opinion that they weren’t right. It’s a lesson for me anyway about speaking out when I disagree and not ignoring and I’m sorry I didn’t speak up for you more.

I'm really sad it's gone. I had got some really gentle and good advice on there.

It was different to MN but had a place.

This site is very clunky to use in comparison but I'm imagining it's to do with servers, locations and amount of users.

Because I have a lot of horrible personal things going on in my own life and I find them fascinating and it takes my mind of my own problems. It’s a little distraction. I’m not nasty I just like to discuss what they are doing and why and I have personal options on whether they are looking to make money off the Royal name etc or not. I have things I like about them too. I’m not nasty as I said.

Why does anyone wish to discuss anything on a forum I suppose is the question.

@Roussette. Sorry it has taken me a while to get back to you on your post a few pages ago. I have been at work. When I referred to posters who had left, many of them had tried to find out from MN why they had had posts deleted or had received bans and were genuinely baffled. It must be very difficult to be a moderator. It is impossible to read every post on every thread and quite rightly it is down to posters to report inappropriate posts. For example a post that quoted another was deleted but the original post was left to stand, until I reported the original post. So I think moderation can be manipulated by selective reporting. I appreciate that mods do not have eyes in the back of their heads. I think my point is that no site is perfect and this site has plenty of faults too. There were unfair accusations on several threads. As I said previously, I think that the ensuing debacle went too far and was getting rather tiresome. I understand that you feel upset by personal attacks on you. I am sorry that you felt this and it is unacceptable . But other people also felt that they were under attack and it is not fair to say that these were not people’s genuine feelings. Two wrongs do not make a right. (Just to be clear, I am not in any way accusing you of personally attacking anyone). There are, unfortunately, unpleasant people all over the internet and that includes on this site.

And I Certainly never posted every day for years. I dipped in and out. Posted if relevant and often lurked reading as my distraction material. People read all sorts - trump threads have been going ages, parking threads, household cleaning threads etc. Each to their own.
