Just trying to live a meaningful life in an increasingly bizarre world in which nothing makes sense any more.

I cant do Christmas yet - I have to go all out spook-tastic, mainly to piss off those who think the very idea of the same children who have been in the DCs bubbles at school knocking on my door in fancy dress and being given a fun sized choccie bar is akin to someone who's tested positive for covid going round licking everyone in the local old folks home.

Then I have to navigate the issue of bon fire night and if we can't go to an organised affair, will we be risking accidentally setting fire to the neighbours shed if we DIY it...

Only then can I stick on the Michael Buble playlist and open the mince pies.

@helenadove I just saw you and I are on the same thread about masks! Just wanted to support you and say that a smear test is what I have had to cancel as can't conform! Also a good friend just had to have emergency dental treatment and was told they can't use pain relief injections or the drill! Unless it's a double appointment and they have to deep clean the room afterwards! She said it was like going back to the victoriana times! Xmas Dec's well my eldest dd has said she is putting them up in November! As the sooner this shitty year is over the better!! Xx

My dentist used a local on me this week (and did some minor drilling). Next patient was waiting outside (literally outside as waiting room closed) so don't think they did any more of a clean than usual. There definitely seems to be inconsistencies in care being offered. Dh can't get a check up (different dentist) but I can. Covid is being used as an excuse for poor service by too many

DominaShantotto · 27/09/2020 21:43

Uni timetable is out - it's shit. Hour after hour sat in front of the PC, and with school no longer having wrap around care (announced right near the start of the term as well at the last minute) most of my sessions clash with school runs.

Then our "oh you'll only be on campus for blocks of work" is bollocks - we have one day where we have 2 hours on campus, an hour gap, and then an hour online.

It takes me at least an hour and a half to get back from uni on a day the trains are running a normal timetable. Library is apparently opening in full distanced must wear a mask mode - but I'm doubting it'll open with how the shit is hitting the fan university wise.

BogRollBOGOF · 27/09/2020 22:07

I don't normally do much with Halloween, partly because we're normally away at the ILs and partly because DS1 loathes it.

Tempted to do something for it this year though, just to mark the passing of time.

justasking111 · 27/09/2020 22:12

@DominaShantotto I suspect DS uni. timetable will be very fluid when he starts supposed to have some studio time. hah..

He has asked for some work from home to do computer stuff just to keep busy because he has no idea what is to come this year.

On FB tonight saw a mother has gone to Swansea to collect her son, the whole floor above him is in lockdown cannot leave, having to wash their clothes in a sink. This is not education she said but imprisonment.

Bollss · 27/09/2020 22:12

I totally get the thing about Christmas. I feel like I'm willing it on this year because i have fuck all else to be excited for and I want this year to be over.

Saying that I am not expecting great things from 2021 I must admit. However I'm going to try and make the best of it come what may!

BogRollBOGOF · 27/09/2020 22:23

At least 2021 won't start off with fake optimism ripe for crushing. And we were so keen to see the back of the last decade Grin

I'm optomistic for spring/ summer. It's getting that far that's daunting.

I'm not desperate for the vaccine...I want a drug that will make me hibernate until the daffodills are ready to party!

@Wishfulthinking1977
You can DIY an HPV test if you're concerned about having missed a smear.
There was no way I could put myself through that in a mask either, I don't understand how anyone can! It is very easy to do an online test in the comfort of your own home and pop it back in the post.

Thanksitsgotpockets · 27/09/2020 22:57

I'm very pleased that Manchester Met university have realised they have no legal remit to hold the students. They are now relying on student's goodwill, which they have surely lost by imprisoning them in the first place.

justasking111 · 27/09/2020 23:13

@Thanksitsgotpockets I hope Swansea are taking heed of this.

Thanksitsgotpockets · 27/09/2020 23:34

They've climbed down on posters too, though have included a stern warning not to put anything up that's illegal.

In response, the arts society have offered to help supply protest posits.

@Wishfulthinking1977 Thanks Smile Flowers @Littlebelina Flowers Flowers That dental stuff [shock[

BogRollBOGOF · 28/09/2020 07:12

DIY smear sounds interesting.
I'm normally really good at getting mine done, but not this year. Not in an overheated surgery having panic attacks about my own face or a masked person rummaging down there.

Taswama · 28/09/2020 07:26

Good news about climbdown on keeping students locked up. I was wondering why no one seemed to be challenging the legality of it.

AnxiousElephant77 · 28/09/2020 07:27

Morning everyone. Wedding postponed to December next year so I'm back and ready to eye roll.

DominaShantotto · 28/09/2020 07:41

I loved the protest via post-it’s - it was just so “I’ve got to uni with a box of stationery and I’m bored and stuck here”
MMU have screwed their reputation for a good while to come now with this

Bollss · 28/09/2020 07:46

I've been thinking about you @AnxiousElephant77 especially when they reduced numbers again bastards we are strongly considering postponing until 2022. Considered eloping too but the more I thought about it the more I realised I want what I've planned and not a compromise. Sadhope you're feeling as ok as you can be. I know how shit it is Flowers
Bollss · 28/09/2020 07:48

I'm due a smear test as well and I can't face it. I've not had one before and although I've given birth and realistically that was much worse I'm just too nervous and I know full well that I'll start hyperventilating in a mask.

AnxiousElephant77 · 28/09/2020 07:50

@TrustTheGeneGenie We're same date next year, so 27/12/21. If it's still a state then, we're taking the kids and my parents and getting married abroad.

I've missed everyone! Nice to be back!

wanderings · 28/09/2020 07:55

I'm glad about the university climbdown - the government and other zealots now have to accept that the public are no longer so terrified that they will believe any old shit like they did in March, such as the app being mandatory to enter somewhere. The "protest by post-its" reminds me of a scene from an early series of Grange Hill: when the anti-uniform group SAG occupied the secretary's office, the headmaster locked them in. They put up sheets of paper in the window, saying "SAG SIT-IN No. 1".

I've thought of another flaw with the app: surely somebody can use it maliciously? Check in somewhere where they have a grudge, register a positive result or symptoms, so that everybody else (including the staff) gets the ping to self-isolate. Maybe Matt Wanksock or one of his lockdown zealots will do this, to boost the infection rates if he thinks they're not high enough for him to salivate over, until he gets the frantic whisper from Saint Boris "remember we're trying to save Christmas".

@AnxiousElephant77! Welcome back! Have been thinking about you. Gutted for you but the constant rollercoaster must have been so draining so am hoping that actually, having made the decision, that you're feeling a little better? Xx

AnxiousElephant77 · 28/09/2020 08:02

@Ibake Relieved to be honest. It all got a bit much.

AnxiousElephant77 · 28/09/2020 08:13

On the app... I've downloaded it but when I went to check in on Saturday night dp went mad. "Don't check in! I'm not isolating because someone six tables away tests positive!"

He also had an argument with the server about mask wearing to go to the loo.

The kids were mortified.
