Just trying to live a meaningful life in an increasingly bizarre world in which nothing makes sense any more.

I volunteer on a thursday morning in a charity shop with two women who are total dementors. One is a "bleach your shopping" type.

Rules are: in the back shop, face coverings to be worn when you can't socially distance. So when I was working behind a desk at the other end of the room to them, I took my visor off. They were NOT happy. Lots of loud comments about opening the doors for ventilation and "keeping people safe". Hmm

TheOrchidKiller · 24/09/2020 16:14

Found you! Thanks for the sensible & comforting new thread title, @RealityExistsInTheHumanMind.

I don't trust the app either. I've never rushed to get new bits of tech so I'll probably get round to downloading it around the time they declare the pandemic over.

Finally managed to register this week's swab test online, having gone round in circles since yesterday, trying & failing, knowing that if you don't register it, they can't send your results. Phoned the helpline. They said the web page address to register home test kits which is printed in the official government "how to do a test" booklet has been changed since last week but the booklets haven't been updated, & that was why I couldn't find the right page. Christ on a bike!

As for WFH, DH has been working along to the soundtrack to Les Mis.
"Do you hear the people sing..."
No, I don't. Singing in public & mass gatherings have been banned.

110APiccadilly · 24/09/2020 16:16

Checking in. No intention to install the app, but there's a possibility that my employers (who are cautious to the point of paranoia) might try to make us use it. In which case, I'll just be putting the Bluetooth off.

I am also out of cooperation; DH's mental health has gone downhill alarmingly this week - he was coping but I think now we feel like we're going backwards it's the last straw for him.

WouldBeGood · 24/09/2020 16:16

“Let’s hear the people sing!
Singing the songs of angry women!”

larrygrylls · 24/09/2020 16:22

Something to think about: if a pandemic with 0.4% mortality affected mainly the young (not impossible, possibly attacking fast growing cells), would we have anti dementor threads? Or would you just get on with it ?

And, it is funny how people only listen to the experts they agree with? There was a lot of braying, over Brexit, over not listening to ‘experts’ (aka bank economists, whose expertise has been found severely wanting over time). However, on these threads, highly qualified epidemiologists and statisticians (real experts) are rubbished as ‘dementors’.

@WouldBeGood Love it!!!! Grin

Worldgonecrazy · 24/09/2020 16:44

I won’t be downloading the app. With Alexa and google locator on its it like we are untraceable anyway 🤩. Every now and then I wonder who gets to sit and listen to all the couples getting jiggy ext to their Alexa?

ISaySteadyOn · 24/09/2020 16:51

I would just like to say, for the record, that my mental health would be a lot worse without all of you.

You are all to a woman intelligent, questioning, interesting, kind, and empathetic and I feel very lucky to have 'met' you all.

Thirded. On those days when I struggle and feel like the only sane person, you lot keep me going.

BogRollBOGOF · 24/09/2020 17:10

The power of sensibly discussing the issues, what's going on in our lives and a good dose of sympathy and humour along the way is so powerful.

TheOrchidKiller · 24/09/2020 17:11

Ah, that's nice @ISaySteadyOn.
Likewise.

I think the point of these threads, & the idea behind them, is that its a place to come & be questioning, or to admit to feeling fed up, & you know you won't be made to feel stupid in return. You can post stuff, like how much you miss normal life, & no one jumps down your throat. Just because I miss hugging people doesn't mean I believe that hugging my friends is necessarily a great idea right now, but here I am allowed to express my sadness about something I miss.

And I've learned much about dowsing, about how things are different around the country & indeed the world, & more than I want to know about phallic veg.

SirSamuelVimes · 24/09/2020 17:11

Fourth-ded?!

Whatever. Yes. Thank you all for still being here.

chocolatesweets · 24/09/2020 17:13

Hiii love you guys!

TabbyStar · 24/09/2020 17:17

Someone's posted a poll on our local FB covid-19 group about who's going to download the app and it's about 60/40% yes/no at the moment - that's more people than I'd expect being out of cooperation (good phrase!)

MaxNormal · 24/09/2020 17:27

Hello, checking in.
I'm all out of co-operation as well. Today has been a bad, bad day. Had a nice little budget holiday and returned home determined to be positive and ride out winter. That co-incided with the announcement of the tightening of restrictions, including shelving the planned October opening of spectator sports, conferences etc.
I was holding out for Sunak's announcement today, given that Johnson had acknowledged the effect on the sector. More fool me - no help at all.

I feel really really bleak. I'm terrified for us personally, financially, and watching a whole sector now potentially collapse. I just don't know what the fuck we're going to do, and I don't know how I'm going to cope. I had honestly hoped, after the last tough for months, that there was a glimmer of hope and now it's looking so so bad. I feel sick.

oldnormalplease · 24/09/2020 17:29

(NC for this.)

Had an email from my boss this morning, commanding us all to download the NHS covid app, and to confirm to him that we had done so.

Being a contrary bugger, my first thought was 'fuck that'. Surely an employer can't tell you what to put on your phone?!

Also, although I have a smartphone, I rarely have it switched on, only take it out of the house if I know I'm going to need it, and know for a fact that I will not be in any situations where I'm within 2 metres of someone for 15 mins or more. (Currently working from home.)

Boss loves a bit of drama so is really enjoying coronavirus.

So, what do you think? I don't think I'm going to download the app thanks very much. And so far boss has only had 1 employee respond to say they've done it so I may not be the only one.

Ibake · 24/09/2020 17:32

Jeez really? Is it a work phone or your own? If it's a work phone I guess you might have no choice - but never take it anywhere when you're not working. If it's your phone then I do not believe he's got any right whatsoever. Oh my god. Unbelievable

DominaShantotto · 24/09/2020 17:35

DD2 has been really really overthinking (she's good at this) her teacher's comment today about how they MUST wash everything every day to stop corona... some fuckwit has timetabled three PE sessions (one's a one-off) on three consecutive days and then wondered why parents only tend to have one PE kit compared to multiple changes of uniform. So of course - piling MORE shit on parents by guilting their kids into relaying this all home.

I'm just fucking sick of it all right now. Trying to chug on with uni work as stuff is posted online in small doses but the motivation is not there in this situation.

oldnormalplease · 24/09/2020 17:36

@Ibake My own phone!

Hi All. Checking in to new thread. Not posted much lately but reading. Keeps me sane.

Ibake · 24/09/2020 17:38

Ok. So I guess it depends on your level of belligerence. Don't necessarily use me as a benchmark as mine is quite high! Options:
Tell him to GTF
Tell him you've done it and just don't
Tell him you have, show him and delete it afterwards
Am currently feeling all angry and 1984y on your behalf.

NowYouListenToMeFella · 24/09/2020 17:38
@Ibake My own phone!
What. That's insane. I work for the equivalent of the NHS and we haven't been told to download it to work phone not to mind our own.

WalesAppearsToBeSlightlySaner · 24/09/2020 17:44

I'm going to hold fire on the app, but I'm in Wales so not sure if we're meant to our not. Having a luxurious day of ignoring the news and checking the instructions on shops to see what the roolz are today.

DH forgot his mask this morning and so pulled up his top!
