Just trying to live a meaningful life in an increasingly bizarre world in which nothing makes sense any more.

Day 1 of "blended learning"... course leader's internet's fucked up so she can't upload the induction week video that's due to be online this morning...

Reedwarbler · 28/09/2020 08:50

Can't the government see that increasing the fines for failing to isolate (which they have today) will just make people more inclined not to engage with checking in/track and trace etc, because now, as well as losing your wages you could have a large fixed penalty on top. They are actively encouraging people to grass up their neighbours.
I expect there is some happy salivating about this on the coronavirus thread, with a swathe of identical posts 'My neighbour is failing to isolate, should I report them?', and the answer will be 'FFS YES' as d's rub their hands in delight.(I can't bear to go and look!)
We have yet to 'check in' to our local pub. No-one has asked us to, so we don't bother.

Orangeblossom7777 · 28/09/2020 09:14

Yes, that is how it makes you feel I agree. We have had texts telling us to download it and also leaflets given out at the supermarket- like Anxious elephant my DH gave them short shrift and apparently was told off by them. It's all stressing me out. I read you may get a false positive report telling you to isolate due to Bluetooth (in the Times).

DominaShantotto · 28/09/2020 09:19

I'm not downloading the fecking app. I've just found lying and saying "sorry - got an iPhone 6" is a decent get out if you're pushed on it. I don't trust the shower of shit with it.

Orangeblossom7777 · 28/09/2020 09:30

I didn't like getting the text telling me to. I guess it is because the GPs have my number on file. Not sure. We don't have to do we, it isn't obligatory? I'm not either unless it is. I don't trust it.

TheOrchidKiller · 28/09/2020 09:38

DH got a text last night asking him to download the app.

He uses an 11 year old, old-fashioned, not-smart mobile phone which is held together with gaffer tape. He only switches it on if he's expecting a call or text (yes, we are still married).

It's hard enough trying to text him if we get separated on a shopping trip. Track-&-trace will have no luck hunting him down. It'll be like a big game of Where's Wally, except harder because Wally will be dressed like every other 50-something dad.

Yes I think it will just cause more to avoid testing and T&T

and at the same time school has said to send the DC in unless very specific list of symptoms which may miss cases as well-

Quote

Parents / carers should look carefully at key symptoms (to check not colds/flu) keeping your child off school without these key symptoms could result in them falling behind further at school which we are anxious to avoid.

In bold If you would have sent your child in to school before lockdown with the symptoms they are experiencing, then the general advice from Government is that you send them in now

To be clear, the key symptoms are:

A high temperature you feel hot to the chest or back (you do not need to measure this)

A new continuous cough (this means coughing a lot for over an hour, or 3 or more coughing episodes in 24 hrs)

Loss or change to sense of smell or taste

Orangeblossom7777 · 28/09/2020 09:42

Orchid thing is about those phones, you hardly ever have to charge them. I think I might change to one!

Thanksitsgotpockets · 28/09/2020 10:06

I give my landline phone number to track and trace. Only people I like get my mobile phone number. Other people ( well companies usually) get the landline. When the landline rings once in a blue moon, we all jump a mile at the sound from the alien being in the corner and have a discussion about whether we should answer or not, by which time it has usually rung off.

Orangeblossom7777 · 28/09/2020 10:26

Yes, the sports centre have my landline number too, we tend to screen calls from there and call back if recognise the number.

They told me in en email should not ever have to isolate from here as due to their measures would never be within 2m of another person. And they have never had to, which was reassuring.

Apart from that I'll probably just get takeaway coffees and avoid anywhere which takes tracing details. Or keep it to a minimum. Maybe it will save me a bit.

I've got a question re the symptoms. If I get a cold,I always lose my sense of smell as my nose is blocked. When I lie down, as the snot trickles down the back of my throat and makes me cough. And I always, always, always lose my sense of taste about 2 days in for one day (I usually say that's the day I could eat eggs, can't stand the smell or taste normally!) Once I'm at that stage, I've usually got about 2/3 days left of cold to get through. So what do I do? Discuss.
Bollss · 28/09/2020 10:31
@TrustTheGeneGenie We're same date next year, so 27/12/21. If it's still a state then, we're taking the kids and my parents and getting married abroad.

I've missed everyone! Nice to be back!
I don't blame you at all. It's super shit having to postpone. I'm glad you've got it sorted though it must be a weight off your mind even though i know you desperately didn't want to have to move it.

In my honest opinion i'd do nothing and get on with my life. Unless you are likely to be called out for coughing maybe? But for me, i am generally alone in my office or WFH so i would just carry on. This is the thing, you know what it is, it happens every time, its not new or unusual i dont see the point in testing tbh.

TheOrchidKiller · 28/09/2020 10:46

@Supermarketworker06
I'd quietly carry on too, so long as the loss of smell comes with the cold, & you don't have the high temp with it.

I've got a cold & had the trickly snot cough too. Weekly covid test is negative though. If I'd had a cough first & a temp I'd stay at home.
Also, I've only coughed early mornings. I assume a covid cough is all day & night?

I'm not desperate for the vaccine...I want a drug that will make me hibernate until the daffodils are ready to party!

Me too - and if it worked a bit too well, well that would be ok too - although I would miss the daffys Grin

@Supermarketworker06
Discuss.

Like everyone else, I would carry on as normal. The advice for schools - if you would have sent DC to school before then send them now - makes so much sense to me.

If I was feeling well enough, and not uncontrollable coughing during the day - business as usual.

Yep that's my thoughts too. I've had flu two years in a row in 2016 ? Can't remember, but bugger I was ill, off work for weeks so I know the difference between flu and a cold! We've got to report about signs of illness to work, so I've heard, so will just have to see what happens if I get a cold. Haven't got one so far, touch wood, bet I bloody get one now.

Orangeblossom7777 · 28/09/2020 11:05

It was the bit about if you would normally send them in please do so, I mean I'd usually send them in unless really quite unwell and concerned, however I understand covid in children / teens tends to me quiet mild...so that confused me a bit.

Feeling more stressed and down than previously about all this what with the fines and app and everything. It all just seems to get more punitive and worrying.

Howyoualldoworkme · 28/09/2020 11:07

dkl55 How are the numbers for Greece looking? I'm on tenterhooks for Italy! Bought some euros at the weekend so that's probably jinxed it!Confused

I've had the outside of enough with all this now! Threatening that students can't come home for Christmas unless we behave ourselves? That's coercive cohesion right there!
When one of my sons was at University many years ago my ex husband told me that I had too many books taking up too much space and if I didn't get rid of some he couldn't come home from University for the summer Angry
We are being held in an abusive relationship here! Made my blood run cold I can tell you...

My children are all grown up now but we've got young grandchildren. My gs is the healthy nose picking one that I have most contact with, he's a right healthy little bugger, always covered in dirt, snot and dinner! His mum's a teacher, she had a dreadful cold shortly after the kids went back but so far their school is still functioning pretty well, no closures yet.
Supermarketworker06 · 28/09/2020 11:14

And I'm not downloading the app either.

Orangeblossom7777 · 28/09/2020 11:17

My year 7 is having the nasal flu vaccine today which in the past made him and bit cold-y for a while (maybe due to the nature of it) adding to it all.. Hmm

Blobby10 · 28/09/2020 11:40

Not downloading the app either 0 have an iPhone 6S (which does run ios 14.1 but shhh don't tell anyone!) but I'm not going anywhere anyway except work and out cycling on my own. However right outside my office is a bus stop and I would bet my bottom dollar that if I signed up, I would get told someone at the bus stop tested positive and be forced to isolate

ISaySteadyOn · 28/09/2020 12:08

I go nowhere except my local park and see very few people. I am mostly afraid to go anywhere now because of the hostility to people without masks I keep reading about. I am supposed to see friends tomorrow but with all the new rules in place, I am very anxious.

Orangeblossom7777 · 28/09/2020 12:12

Horrible isn't it. I meet a friend once a week for a walk and not sure about that now..due to this... I hate how this fear rules our lives.

Another thought in areas where mixing is not allowed, that would put people off giving details of meeting people as would be clear had not followed those rules. The whole thing seems set to fail.
