Another here fed up with everything - got to phone our furloughed staff today. Someone pointed out its now 21 weeks since this shit show started to affect us. We furloughed staff at Easter thinking it would be for 3 weeks Sad. I honestly don't know if the company will survive this - we've beaten economic recessions several times over the past 72 years but I think Covid 19 might be the straw that breaks our back once the furlough scheme is stopped. how do you justify making people redundant who have worked in the same place since they left school at 16 and are now in their 50s and 60s? How on earth would they get another job? These people aren't just employees - they are part of a family.

Went to the gym this morning just before 5am and a lady is there who I didn't see last week. 'Oh no' says she 'I was in Lanzarote - I'm technically 'quarantining' (with air quotes) this week but we didn't see anyone over there and the plane was empty so I'm just working from home like I have done since April'. Now I'm all for breaking The Roolz when they seem ridiculous but I unexpectedly found myself bristling at this!!! Dear fellow AD's - should I report this lady?? To the police? To my MP? To the Army? To the Covid fanatics on these boards so they can tar and feather her for not quarantining properly ??? Grin

Hurrah, @Dollybagwash! Have a great trip.

I agree about the low level stress; I’m a planner by nature and the lack of any certainty beyond the next week is stressing me out. DD will be sitting school entrance exams in the winter, and it doesn’t look as though we’ll be able to go and visit any of the schools before I fill in the application forms. I’d love to book an Easter holiday so we all have something to look forward to, and I daren’t do it in case we lose the money. And at work I’m trying to think about the accommodation we need for the next 15 years and no-one can tell me what the rules are going to be next month. Total abdication of responsibility by the Government; how can anyone plan anything if we don’t know what their aim is and whether they’re aiming to get us back to real normal or something else entirely?

ProfessorRadcliffeEmerson · 25/08/2020 09:06

Flowers, @Blobby10. I cross posted and didn’t see your post before I put mine up. That puts my woes in perspective, I really hope you survive.

Worldgonecrazy · 25/08/2020 09:10

@Dollybagwash great news!!!

On the rude customers, they are the ones losing out. I am always nice to waiting staff, which has resulted in so many extras and freebies, including the remaining two thirds of a £680 bottle of wine that a customer hadn’t got around to drinking. Yes it was lovely Wine.

Worldgonecrazy · 25/08/2020 09:11

@Blobby10 I don’t know what to say. It’s heartbreaking for all involved.

Blobby10 · 25/08/2020 09:12

*@ProfessorRadcliffeEmerson * thankyou - I think everyone is going through their own difficulties and no one's is less or more important than anyone else's tbh.

Our company is very niche so when things are good they are very good - but for the past few years we've taken a hammering from new and apparently improved methods (although these have been found wanting during lockdown which is great for us!) but have struggled to diversify any further. Doesn't help that 30% of our business is related to aerospace which has now plummeted Sad . Just need to keep plodding on Grin

Blobby10 · 25/08/2020 09:15

*@Worldgonecrazy * thankyou - still hoping we can survive this one too but it's going to be tough.

Pixel7777 · 25/08/2020 09:23

Raining here too... Ibake agreed on the Guardian, Not keen on the dramatic government messaging though...laughed at the BBC the other day which was pondering that people 'might have overestimated their risk' no shit. Well why might that be? They give me the rage too....

DobbyTheHouseElk · 25/08/2020 09:24

@SirSamuelVimesBlackboardMonito

They say but what of someone runs up to us on a walk and breathes in our face???

WTF??

I know. What can you say to that. I’m worried for my friends who are terrified to leave the house.

I’m sure they are the ones on the school threads too.

WouldBeGood · 25/08/2020 09:25

@TrustTheGeneGenie sounds a nightmare! Maybe we should buy an escape chateau for the ADs?

BakewellTarts · 25/08/2020 09:34

@Dollybagwash

Just updating! Negative result so we are going away tomorrow! So exciting. Now to run about like a nutter today to get everything done as I refused to incase I couldn't go 😂
Thats fantastic. Have a wonderful time.
BakewellTarts · 25/08/2020 09:40

@Blooby10 that sounds like a horrible task. I really hope your company survives.

Having been a waitress and barmaid to help pay for uni I have great respect for anyone doing these jobs which are far from easy. A bit of politness costs nothing and why would you be a dick? I can't underatand poorly behaved customers either.

Dowser · 25/08/2020 09:55

@RealityExistsInTheHumanMind
Thanks for new thread
I’ve some catching up to do as I’m home and rubbish internet while away wouldn’t let me log on

ProfessorRadcliffeEmerson · 25/08/2020 10:04

I was the world's worst waitress as a student (I'm amazed I didn't get sacked), so have huge sympathy with everyone doing those jobs. I am not a dick and I tip decently! We're heading out for a Rishi special at lunchtime.

Doobigetta · 25/08/2020 10:04

@Blobby10, don’t shop her. You won’t change her, you’ll just add one more act of spreading suspicion and distrust onto all the others. She almost certainly hasn’t got it, and therefore can’t do any damage anyway.

TheOrchidKiller · 25/08/2020 10:07

Gone back to bed. Would rather be up & out, but can't bear the same old DH WFH mess downstairs, & the weather is vile.

@Blobby10
Went to the gym this morning just before 5am and a lady is there who I didn't see last week. 'Oh no' says she 'I was in Lanzarote - I'm technically 'quarantining' (with air quotes)

You know what, this attitude does get up my nose, faster than a covid swab test. However dubious I am about some govt guidance (eg masks in shops months after the peak), this "I don't need to quarantine" attitude pisses me off.

Loads of us haven't booked holidays, or have cancelled & lost money, because of the requirement to quarantine, knowing we can't meet that requirement. We either can't afford to, or know that having 2 more weeks off would leave our colleagues high & dry, or we might even risk losing our jobs for having more time off.

Going to the gym is taking the piss. She'd better not be going out to take advantage of a Rishi meal deal, especially not where Willow works!

Blobby10 · 25/08/2020 10:08

@Doobigetta don't worry - I wouldn't dream of shopping her! It was supposed to be a bit of a lighthearted quip after the miserableness of the earlier part of my post Grin. I think she had more chance of catching something from me actually as I was breathing quite heavily doing deadlifts and we weren't a full two metres apart Grin

BakewellTarts · 25/08/2020 10:17

I think the quarantine rules are bonkers.

Four colleagues have been abroad recently. One is married to a Portugese lass so visited her family from the start of August. Another is rennovating a wreck between Lisbon and Porto so also been over for most of August. One went to an all inclusive in Tenerife. The last went to a gite in rural France. The rules for all changed whilst they were away so the two who were in Portugal when numbers were high don't have to quarantine but the others do!

Having said which all are being sensible and doing what they should. I would too and certainly be judgy about someone who didn't. I wouldn't report them though as I hate this tittle tattle cuture that is being encouraged.

TheOrchidKiller · 25/08/2020 10:45

For what it's worth, I wouldn't report anyone either. I'm actually very jealous of anyone who has managed to go anywhere on holiday. But also genuinely happy to hear about people's adventures. Reading about some of your trips away on these threads- whether they're about Greek beaches or getting blown about on a ferry- it's a little sign that there is life out there, a beacon on a cold, dark night. Smile

Pixel7777 · 25/08/2020 10:50

The Times is reporting today that in Scotland the testing centres are full of children with 'sniffles' who have been advised to get the whole family isolated (due to school return mainly)

They are so full they have been sending families miles away...but the official advice there is to get tested for mild symptoms such as cold type ones

I thought it was mainly a new cough or temp to look out for.

www.thetimes.co.uk/edition/scotland/coronavirus-in-scotland-test-centres-swamped-by-pupils-with-sniffles-87fm07ww5

"Under current guidance, parents are advised not to send their child to school if they appear to be suffering from “a regular cold”. Instead they are told: “You should all stay at home and get a test by contacting NHS Inform.”

One Edinburgh primary school had almost 50 absences yesterday, as parents heeded this official advice."

Pixel7777 · 25/08/2020 10:53

drive.google.com/file/d/1H2w_qBxTdDp_9Ej8JwhBPJPrOYTNHael/view

We have been given this by school (England) so will be going with the symptoms described there (cough, temp, loss of smell)

countrygirl99 · 25/08/2020 10:57

I was on a call with someone who was dead pissed off about Portugal. They had cancelled their trip to their own villa and re- arranged their leave to have a week in the UK in late September instead due to the quarantine requirements. They were lifted the day before they would have come back. Full of angst about whether they should book flights for September now but would need to try and change their leave again as the villa is let that week & they have already paid an inflated amount to book a cottage.

Pixel7777 · 25/08/2020 11:01

It has been a mess about the travel - interestingly the only ones I know are elderly going abroad and quarantining. One to Holland, one to Spain...they didn't mind really as could stay at home on return anyway being retired, bit still stressful.

TheOrchidKiller · 25/08/2020 11:03

DS is sniffing & blowing his nose like a man (ie like an elephant roaring). This means he has a cold.

It occurred to me last night that they might be sent home from school with cold symptoms.

I will not be sending DS for a test unless he gets the official covid symptoms. But once they're back at school that's potentially a different ball game if "sniffles" become a thing that gets them sent home.

Blobby10 · 25/08/2020 11:04

Does anyone else think that the instructions to 'get a test if you or your family have the symptoms of a common cold' is a back door method to get everyone on a national database of testing? I had a bit of a snotty nose this morning - sometimes do when waking up. Its nothing but according to this I should get tested. Bah!! Humbug I say!! Humbug!!!!Grin
