This is why I think the government are dragging their feet, it was so easy to shut down the whole country and drill fear into people yet now they don't know how to restart things. I'm not sure there's an easy way but that's what the government are paid to do

Saw this article this morning which I'm hoping inspires some confidence in schools reopening

I can't help thinking that there would be better topics for an ad campaign than encouraging people back to work in city centre offices, something a little less nakedly commercial perhaps?? How about something reminding them to wash their hands/socially distance etc etc. Or one that actually explained the risks of CV in a series of easy to remember stats?

LadyOfTheImprovisedBath · 28/08/2020 16:04

Apparently we missed all the announcements about public transport in Wales being back to normal - though timetables might not be.

So fingers crossed we might be able to get on a very quiet train with masks and handsanitizer do a short journey and had have a proper day out day before first child goes back to school.

It really feels like we haven't done anything this spring and summer and we tend to go less far in Autumn and winter due to work and school demands and the weather.

Willow2017 · 28/08/2020 16:11

Many people just don't wan5 yo know the good news they are revelkingbin the doom and gloom and thier new found power to scream and shout at anyone who disagrees with thier version of the rules. What they will do when they no longer have 5hat power I don't know. Thier lives will seem empty of purpose!

Chatted to a little *as in 5 foot and slim as a pencil) older lady in the queue at work obviously struggling with her mask. She said she hated them and was putting it up and down nervously. I told her of it was causing her trouble to take it off as she didnt have to wear one if it was difficult for her. She looked at me in surprise and took it off. Instant change in her whole demeanour much more relaxed. It was quite remarkable.

pearlypidge · 28/08/2020 16:19

I'm annoyed now.

DC's school sent out a long letter last week with arrangements for when they go back next week.

It all sounded very sensible and non-dementory.

However, they've just followed up with an additional letter, and they will now be requiring face masks in all communal areas (we are not (currently) in a local lockdown area). They've also said that scarves/buffs are not acceptable, it has to be a mask.

DS2 will be really upset - he hates wearing masks. The poor boy already wears glasses and hearing aids - there's enough stuff hooked behind his ears already without masks getting tangled into the mix.

mightbealittlebitmad · 28/08/2020 16:23

I've had a lovely normal day out with a friend. Got the train so had to wear a mask but it's doable for half an hour and easier than driving. A lot of things were a bit OTT like the one way systems in shops and the essential track and trace but we just rolled our eyes and went ahead with it. I don't know anybody who is willing to stay with these restrictions for much longer but everyone seems to think they will be here to stay indefinitely until a hypothetical vaccine. I like them are just going along with certain things like masks because I don't know how to change it and I can't be doing with any agro.

Vintagelovingmum · 28/08/2020 16:29

@Willow2017 I've noticed everytime I do a couple of shops with masks I end up with a migraine, making it something I can't really do when dh is at work as the rest of the day is a write off. I feel like it tenses me up either because communication with the children is difficult or because I'm trying to keep the mask up or just because it's not normal. I just dont have time to practice wearing it around the house like one of my friends suggested

Willow2017 · 28/08/2020 17:06

Got the notification from ds2s school re mask wearing from Monday.😠
Those who are exempt will get a "polite badge" saying that. Yeah becsuse marking people out as different worked well in the past didnt it?

Bollss · 28/08/2020 17:07

the thing about getting everyone back in the office and not WFH - for instance where i work every second desk is taped off - we cant fit everyone in.

Then i read something about "come in or lose your job" because its much easier to make someone redundant when you dont see them.

I mean FFS. Scare us into WFH, scare us into going back. Heartless fucking bastards. A lot of companies will save £££ getting rid of office space and therefore wont need to make as many redundancies, but they failed to mention that.

I'm just fucking done with it all, i really am!

Willow2017 · 28/08/2020 17:08

Vintagelovingmum i have noticed more headaches at work if i am mostly out front wearing a mask. I would rather be doing dishes where I don't need to😉 (never thought i would ever say that!)

DominaShantotto · 28/08/2020 17:08

Just had the email with next year's freshers week schedule...

watch a member of the exec make pancakes on zoom
learn how to make cocktails on zoom
netflix watch party on zoom
bingo disco on zoom

... it sounds absolutely awful. In my hairdresser's words "what's the point of fresher's week if you can't get hideously drunk and snog random people?"

RealityExistsInTheHumanMind · 28/08/2020 17:09

@Willow2017
Luckily that lady was in your establishment and not that of a certain D.

@Vintagelovingmum
I don't think it's mainly parents that are the issue it's unions and staff. As it states in the article 'unions and other experts' although I'm pretty sure unions don't qualify as experts in much and certainly not Covid. And they of course wind the parents up.

The government won't be honest and say look, it isn't that bad for most people. We need to take care of the vulnerable. They are doing this for children now to get them back in school but for other things like offices keep this 'safe' message.

People don't believe them not surprisingly due to their fear campaign.

🤣🤣 yep she would have posted a thread about the (7 stone wet) old lady who was trying to kill her😄😄

Willow2017 · 28/08/2020 17:20

Are they expecting a bunch of 10 year olds (mocktails for them!)

Sounds as boring as hell why on earth would someone going to.uni want to watch a random make pancakes????
If this is all they can come up with god help the students. Their lessons must be boring as heck!

PourMeADrink · 28/08/2020 17:24

Yeah they shot themselves in the foot. After all they went on TV everyday saying how many people had died without any other context. Saying how we must stay at home and save lives. To get the frightened back they would have to start telling them about all the other things that kill people all the time to put any context on it. Because any death of covid seems to be sufficient for lots of people to scream for lockdown again.

It sounds like one of the Girl Guides activities. There is definitely one on mocktails!

Surely something interactive like quizes or and escape room type activity would be more useful at getting people interacting?

PourMeADrink · 28/08/2020 17:28

That list for freshers week sounds shit. I would need to be drunk just to watch it.

Vintagelovingmum · 28/08/2020 17:32

@RealityExistsInTheHumanMind I was hoping it would inspire confidence in the unions hopefully! Most of the parents I've spoken to recently are practically clawing at the gates to school wanting children to go back. My brother is a teacher and has been surprisingly dementory about having to go back. He's a healthy 20 something so at low risk

@DominaShantotto that sounds ridiculous for a freshers week. I never did uni but to me the appeal of freshers week is to get out and do stuff, mainly getting drunk and having fun!

Taswama · 28/08/2020 17:47

Aargh - so DS1's school is making face masks mandatory between lessons. Pupils are to bring a clean face mask every day and a personal bottle of hand sanitiser.
Our local rate is like 2 in 100,000. No deaths in ages. But just to be safe they have to do this. DP is as pissed off as I am and suggested pointing out to the school that DS1 is autistic so any consequences for non compliance will be discriminatory.
He (DP) is normally anti using DS's autism as an excuse (me too) but this just feels like a disaster waiting to happen.

Willow2017 · 28/08/2020 17:55

Yeah we got the same washing them regularly, plastic bag to keep them in etc. How do you get one in and out a small bag without touching it? Nothing on how to put them off and on correctly or that they should actually fit your face contours! Just a waste of money and an exercise in the gov saving us all from certain death.

TheOrchidKiller · 28/08/2020 18:46

FFS! Another school in a non-lockdown area where masks are mandatory in communal areas. I'm actually cross.

I am not sending DS with a ziplock bag to put each used mask into, as requested. It can get stuffed into his jeans pocket, where it will stand a chance of making it into the washing machine. I am not forking out for disposable masks, especially not when we've spent pretty much every year they've been at school doing projects on recycling. (Another reason for not getting plastic bags).

He will have one mask per day, & as he won't like what I choose he will have to go & buy some tomorrow. Buffs & scarves not allowed (so glad I bought some of those then, waste of money).

As he's yr 13 he won't be in school that much.

I have witnessed our departmental dementor in action today. Another semi-dementor joined in. They tried to out-dementor each other. My calm & rational comments did not go down well. I feel drained.

@DominaShantotto what a bunch of patronising, cringy dross that fresher's week is! Does it not occur to them that students will do what students do illicitly anyway? (Or they'll do all the drinking & shagging in their stupid bubbles.)

I've said it before, I'll say it again, CAN EVERYONE JUST CALM DOWN!

MxEWeatherwax · 28/08/2020 18:52

Re masks and putting in plastic bag between wears, is it a new plastic bag a day? Is nobody bothered about the environment anymore. I just stick mine in my pocket, because I’m only wearing because I have too. They must be full of other germs. I have just ordered a silk mask, hoping will stop the bloody spots.
Been to cinema today, I ate so much food, so I could keep my mask off for as long as possible. If anyone cares a Tenet is really good, but I had no idea what was going on.

TheOrchidKiller · 28/08/2020 19:04

@MxEWeatherwax in an ideal world it should probably be a clean, triple-zipped bag inside a bag inside a bag inside a metal box with padlock & tied up with hazard tape.

My NHS work uniforms (non-covid) get put in a pillowcase (tho I'm not sure why because I'm layered in PPE). Then I leave them for a few days until I've got enough for a hot wash. So if a pillowcase is good enough for them, I don't know why we need plastic bags.

I have a plastic bag in my handbag for washable masks, but that's to make them easy to find amongst the crap in there. Same bag has been in there for weeks.

PourMeADrink · 28/08/2020 19:04

I am one of those people that is typically bad for the environment. I don't have children but I do long haul flights, have things like artificial grass, drive lots, don't go out of my way to choose environmentally friendly choices etc. I have always acknowledged that and owned my faults.

But it's interesting the compete u-turn on single use plastic and the environment on MN. Masks, gloves, hand sanitizer and disinfecting everything in sight is now seen as acceptable.
