We've always done pumkin carving dress up then spend all night re-lighting candels in the pumkins in garden - some decorations and baking, spooky meals and "scary" films - I think if we'd been here when the kids were younger we may have done trick or treating but as we weren't we've never started it.

They seem to enjoy it even as we've headed into the teen years.

I've got a few really long sparklers and have a few smoke type fireworks and have eye on a few sparkler type ones. Amazon has quite a few indoor styled fireworks - we'll do them outside but they shoudl be fine for our and neigbour pets. First year we had cats we did sausages on BBQ and sparklers in garden as worried they'd be upset.

Last year was first year they were upset- neigbour quite a distance and funny angle clearly misjuge a firework - skimmed over immediate neigbour gardens and blew right outside our glass back doors at that sort of height. Scared us - me and the kids - and the cats. We'd already been to an organised display earlier in the week luckily as I think I'd have worried about leaving the cats otherwise.

No word on our local bonfire & fireworks yet. I am not hopeful though. I can't believe we've got to this. From the start of lockdown in spring and now it's rapidly turning into let's cancel Christmas. I can't believe we're losing the whole year. I feel like crying.

Me too.

Ps you’re not bad at statistics. That poster is not worth arguing with. Some people are incapable of reading comprehension.

I'm loving the "lingering particles of dooooom" on the masks at the school gate thread.

They're fucking mental. They are all fucking mental and they're running the bloody show.

Thanks @Worldgonecrazy. I am actually shit at maths but I'm not telling them that! Grin

Another dementor wrongly stating that Covid is ‘likely’ to make someone severely ill or dead. ‘Likely’ means more probable than not. The most ‘likely’ outcome of Covid infection for everyone is feeling completely normal. The dementors really can’t seem to work that one out. There aren’t many obese 90 year old southern Asian people with dementia In the U.K. (because obesity related disease has killed them) but if there were, they still wouldn’t be ‘likely’ to exhibit symptoms or be ill. They would be more likely than a fit 20 something to be at risk but without a comparator, the use of the word ‘likely’ just makes the poster look dementory and ill informed.

I am now very worried that the lack of organised firework displays will mean even more private firework parties in back gardens. Doesn't bother me, but my dog (like many other animals) is completely terrified by them. We usually have a big display at the other end of the village which seems to satisfy everyone's need for explosions, so very few home displays. She will be a quivering wreck, poor thing.

And increase the likelihood of injuries to people setting them off at home.

If there's no display locally we'll probably do fireworks in the garden. Luckily our dog isn't bothered but I have sympathy for those with pets who hate it.

DominaShantotto · 28/08/2020 12:04

Oh yeah and now the other local fireworks display (West Park for the Nottingham/Derby people) was apparently voted to be cancelled at the council meeting the other night.

www.newscientist.com/article/2252699-covid-19-is-becoming-less-deadly-in-europe-but-we-dont-know-why/

I saw someone post this earlier in week - good news you'd think - but no.

Biggest risk factor is age - but still the majority of older people recover - but then it moves to long term effects often dismiss that other viruses can have similar effects.

I think many people on here don't want to hear reassurance but I think few weeks of school being back - as long as it goes okay generally outlooks will shift again.

I don't think our Chirmas will be hugley impacted for us - depends if IL want to travel down to see us - meals out and panto tend to be one offs - and youngest finished primary so no school plays or carols concerts. Though can see other people chritsmas may be massively impacted this year.

ISaySteadyOn · 28/08/2020 12:22

I braved another shop mask less today. They couldn't have cared less which was a relief. So there are 4 shops I don't need to be anxious about going to.

I was reading a thread about wfh and going back and the phrase 'Covid safe' just made me want to.throw things. It's as though every illness that ever existed has just vanished leaving only covid. But they haven't. TB, for example, is still out there killing people. Killing more people than Covid, I think.

DominaShantotto · 28/08/2020 12:22

I'm sure that there'll be no nativities, no class parties, no joy whatsoever allowed in the school roolz toward Christmas and it's going to be crap (the Eastenders Christmas showdown bombshell episode is going to suck with them having to stay 2 metres apart to bellow about "fairmly")

I'm going to hide at the hairdressers all afternoon - bliss. DH can do the juggling the kids and working thing for a bit because normally if we are "both" doing it - guess who the burden falls onto?! I try to go and work in the conservatory and end up with two kids and the fucking dog in here as well (it's a tiny conservatory in a tiny house).

At least my new cheap solution for conservatory blinds came and they work well - Ikea "roman" ones without the whole string bit and just magnetic strips to raise and lower them. Couple of command hooks and attached to the UPVC without any drilling needed.

bakingcupcakes · 28/08/2020 12:23

DS hates fireworks so last year I went with my friend and DS stayed at home with grandad. We always have a pumpkin but there's not really any trick or treating round here.

I don't think smiling is allowed in the new world. Or fun for that matter.

Willow2017 · 28/08/2020 12:32

Heard some busybody challenging a guy I know in the queue at work not wearing mask. Was too far away to hear her but she got what for😄 I heard the last bit saying he doesn't have to explain himself to.her or anyone else.😄 lovely guy known him for years but rarely see him, he doesn't take kindly to anyone elses shit though. Hopefully she will think twice next time.

Oh god, just seen this, news.sky.com/story/boy-7-and-mother-found-dead-at-london-home-12058233
Another mum and child dead. Boy died by drowning, nothing on mother's cause of death yet. Can't help but think of lockdown being part of the reason for this.

Mum hanged. I thought covid first too. Single mums no matter what their financial circumstances are so vulnerable.

Whilst having contingency plans in place is a good idea I can't stand all this expect the worst and if it doesn't go wrong you get a pleasant surprise.

Whilst there will always be some disappointments and things don't always work out, part of the fun of an event or holiday is the anticipation which you will always miss if you think everything is going to go wrong.

Plus whilst I don't believe that thinking something will make it happen or 'attract' wealth or good fortune. I do think that if you believe something is going to happen you are more likely to do what needs to be done for it to happen. Conversely, believing it won't happen is very often self fulfilling as you don't make the necessary effort.

A positive that could come from it is they could make the link with CFS type illnesses and viruses that may have triggered them. There may be a whole new avenue of research opening up that could help.
Vintagelovingmum · 28/08/2020 13:59

I'm really starting to wonder, at the beginning everybody thought that the science was gospel and then as soon as the science says it's time to open up and things aren't as bad as they seemed people don't seem to believe in the science anymore

I've been thriving on having things to look forward to, with 2 small children any difference from the groundhog day most days are, is a bonus.
We're trying to plan a uk road trip in October to take our youngest to meet grandparents and great grandparents through patio doors etc. It just feels futile though, between my husband at risk of redundancy because of this crap and not knowing what situation we'll be in in a month I just don't really want the disappointment.

@DominaShantotto I'm going to have to check those blinds out, I hate our conservatory, it's full of spiders and flies and is just unusable although it was a great space to put up the birth pool with my 2nd

Plus they were flooded off last year. Markeaton fell victim to budget cuts years ago. Sad

I'm alright with autumn until Bonfire Night. I'd happily skip to December and by-pass January at that point.

It's odd in the Bogroll house today... no sibling fighting... no screeching youtubers... DS2 is getting soggy at sports, and DS1 is at his friends Grin

Not that I've done anything useful...DH and I managed to chat for a couple of hours uninterupted by (precious) offspring or his work phone going!

Bonus, both DCs were herded out to the car alive and in a socially acceptable condition by 8:50 Halo

SirSamuelVimesBlackboardMonito · 28/08/2020 14:40

Phew. Email back from dd's head - they will not be doing masks in school, staff or pupils. Thank goodness.

PourMeADrink · 28/08/2020 15:21

Posting on the threads about the demise of the city centres and the government trying to encourage people back in the office has got me thinking.

Surely the government can see that all the media of fear is stopping companies and people wanting to go back to the offices in the city? Keeping up the fear coupled with masks and other rules just makes it even more unlikely to encourage people currently WFH to go back to the office and companies won't want to get into any H&S issue.

LadyOfTheImprovisedBath · 28/08/2020 15:30

They're planning an ad campign
Coronavirus: Campaign to encourage workers back to offices

Transport Secretary Grant Shapps said some things were "impossible" to do remotely.

But Health Secretary Matt Hancock said he cared more about how employees performed than where they were working.

Ministers in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland are still advising people to work from home if possible.

I don't think they're all singing from the same hymn sheet.

SirSamuelVimesBlackboardMonito · 28/08/2020 15:35

The problem is they don't seem to have thought about how much easier it is to get people to believe something bad than it is to get them to believe something good. That's why we're seeing the same people on here who were all for 'following the science' when the science said stay home it's dangerous, suddenly sceptical when the science says it's safe in schools, it's safe to go back to the office, to eat out in restaurants etc.

It's a mess.

It was so easy to close everything down but not so easy getting it back up and running. Project fear has a lot to answer for.
