Got a new (well second hand, but new for us) car in March. Much bigger than I've ever driven but I've practised in it a lot and now feel much more confident.

Today I was pulling in to our drive and completely misjudged the distance - I somehow (very slowly) drove against the corner of our bay window.

The only damage is a very neat dent in the bumper -.probably an inch and a half long. I'm so embarrassed, I've no idea how I did it.

I'm dreading telling DH. He wont be angry or anything but he will think it is a but worrying which it is really.

I could keep shtum but I've never kept anything from him.

What would you do!?!?

Take a deep breath and tell him.

mylittleyumyum · 20/08/2020 14:17

Make it out to be a lot worse than it is before he sees it though Grin

DeepFriedKermit · 20/08/2020 14:18

If the bumper is plastic - pour some boiling water on it and it might pop out

TheAugusta · 20/08/2020 14:18

Why is it worrying? Accidents happen and you were going very slowly - it's not the crime of the century! Tell him.

PurpleDaisies · 20/08/2020 14:18

Tell him. It will be embarrassing but it’s not exactly a disaster.

latticechaos · 20/08/2020 14:18

Just tell him. You misjudged the size due to it being bigger presumably.

You didn't go wrong way down a dual carriageway or something.

Having said that I rarely drive because I am really not that confident, so my standards made be low Grin

Flowers for the worry Flowers

BuffaloCauliflower · 20/08/2020 14:20

I’d have come straight in and said ‘babe I’m an idiot, I dinged the car’, and he’d have said ‘yes you are, nevermind it’s only little’ and we’d just get on with our day. Don’t worry about it Smile

OhToBeASeahorse · 20/08/2020 14:20

I thought you'd tell me to fib.

Gah.

It is plastic, thanks for the tip, I'll try that.

I'll tell him later.gulp

It’ll be fine. I scraped our car door on our own drive post - the feeling of being an idiot and the expense and annoyance of the repair was much worse than the actual incident. I bet your DH will surprise you and not be too concerned.

doris9034 · 20/08/2020 14:31

why are you so worried about telling him?
I repeatedly dinged my DP's ridiculously large car, but it was never an issue between us....

seven201 · 20/08/2020 14:32

I've crackled my rear bumper on our bay window too Blush. I can't even remember telling dh, it's not a big thing.

toobusytothink · 20/08/2020 14:34

I reversed my big Discovery into the side door of my (now ex) husband’s BMW damaging both!! I pride myself on being a good driver. Double whammy and embarrassment... he took it better than I thought he would 🤦‍♀️

OhToBeASeahorse · 20/08/2020 14:35

Well i told him and he rolled his eyes and gave me a hug

I'm just embarrassed.

He is a keeper Smile

1forAll74 · 20/08/2020 14:39

It is not a disaster ,anyone can misjudge things. I was walking down our village road yesterday, and noticed just how many bump, and dent marks were on peoples shiny new cars.

KookaburraK · 20/08/2020 14:42

Aww he sounds lovely! Don’t worry about it, it takes time to get used to a bigger car :)

CleverCatty · 20/08/2020 14:43

Just tell him. He won't divorce you over this will he??!!

Zaphodsotherhead · 20/08/2020 14:43

I always drive ding-able cars.

ie cars that I won't mind too much if they get the odd dent or scrape.

Just pulling into a hedge to let someone drive past can put scrapes into the paintwork, so you can't afford to be too precious round here!

Glad it turned out all right for you!

OhToBeASeahorse · 20/08/2020 14:44

He's now decided to just take the piss out of me and has invited me to go and smash up our other car.. git...

I reversed into our old garage door once, car was ok, door a little bent... dh says have you been in the garage today? Me... um yes kind of...

DianasLasso · 20/08/2020 14:45

@AlCalavicci

He is a keeper Smile
Yup! You've got a good 'un there.
Karatema · 20/08/2020 14:47

My DH took the piss when I knocked the gate post down with his car! This was 10+ years ago but every so often I get a small "dig" about it. These things happen!

Bargebill19 · 20/08/2020 14:48

That is exactly what my DH would do. Deffo a keeper.

For future can you put a marker somewhere so that you know how far back to reverse/ drive in? Eg when you mirror lines up with a tennis ball stuck to the fence that’s far enough type thing?
(We had to do this to save my dad from flattening the garage freezer)

LimitIsUp · 20/08/2020 14:49

I managed to drive over a dragons tooth in a New Forest car park with my brand new Audi Q5 six years ago - galling isn't it

MulticolourMophead · 20/08/2020 14:49

I agree you have a keeper, and even the joking seems fine.

My ex would have ranted for days about it. But then, I've always been a better driver than him so it would more likely have been him that dinged the car. As he has, more than once.
