Got a new (well second hand, but new for us) car in March. Much bigger than I've ever driven but I've practised in it a lot and now feel much more confident.

Today I was pulling in to our drive and completely misjudged the distance - I somehow (very slowly) drove against the corner of our bay window.

The only damage is a very neat dent in the bumper -.probably an inch and a half long. I'm so embarrassed, I've no idea how I did it.

I'm dreading telling DH. He wont be angry or anything but he will think it is a but worrying which it is really.

I could keep shtum but I've never kept anything from him.

What would you do!?!?

I would have told him you parked it on the street when you were out and someone obviously bumped it and scarpered!

Saz12 · 20/08/2020 14:51

I managed to catch the side of DH’s front bumper on a gate post, breaking all the clips that held it on.... so it fell off completely. I just stuck it back on with gorilla-tape and boomed it into the garage! Mistakes happen.

You could always go on the attack “which IDIOT thought putting a house wall RIGHT there was a good idea...?!!”.

GreyGardens88 · 20/08/2020 14:53

I couldn't get worked up over an inch long dent

WitchQueenofDarkness · 20/08/2020 14:55

@toobusytothink

I reversed my big Discovery into the side door of my (now ex) husband’s BMW damaging both!! I pride myself on being a good driver. Double whammy and embarrassment... he took it better than I thought he would 🤦‍♀️
I did something similar - I always parked on one side of the drive and DP on the other.

For some reason one day we swapped but I was on autopilot. I swung out as usual and straight into the side of DP's car.

He took it very well but both cars needed a trip to the bodyshop.

Jayaywhynot · 20/08/2020 14:56

Iv kerbed all four alloys on OH's very expensive brand new car, 1st time I hit the kerb and damaged the alloy was half an hour after he picked it up, I usually try to squeeze a tear out, he never gets annoyed but I always feel bad.
Fess up!

GabsAlot · 20/08/2020 14:57

bless ya i was nervo9us about telling my dh i had gone into the car in front of me waiting at a raunadabout he just said as long as everyones ok

mbosnz · 20/08/2020 14:58

I hit a supermarket bollard with our Honda Odyssey - a big ol' people mover. DH was most understanding, I was more upset than he was. I was even more upset when I hit THE SAME BLOODY BOLLARD, with our next Honda Odyssey. He was just perplexed. Why had I parked there?!

gingercat02 · 20/08/2020 14:59

I reversed my car into the garage door not long after we moved in. Accidents happen

SerenityNowwwww · 20/08/2020 15:01

As long as you are ok! That’s the main thing really. A wee dint won’t make much difference (some decided to jump on our car a few months ago and it’s now got bloody footprints in it... grrrrrrrr).

Deep breath - it’s just a wee dint and no one got hurt (main thing remember). Any wee scratches can be easily covered (I’m a whiz at this).

potter5 · 20/08/2020 15:02

Years ago I pulled onto our drive in our new car (husband's pride and joy) and sheared the whole left wing off the car! It was left on the path along with the headlight!

All my neighbours came out to see what the bang was.
I burst into tears, my husband hugged me and said "'it's only a car".
He is definitely a keeper!

Lurkingforawhile · 20/08/2020 15:05

Park it again so the bumper is well in the sun. I had quite a big ding on my door and I thought I'd gone mad because it just popped out one day. My dad tells me that materials have memory (he's an engineer) and this is why when you heat them up they pop back to their original shape. We've all done something like that by the way. I was in Ireland on holiday doing a three-point turn and just reversed my boyfriend's car into a grass bank Blush

OhToBeASeahorse · 20/08/2020 15:06

Well this is all very reassuring, thanks everyone

@mbosnz this may be far too much information but I'm heavily pregnant and constipated and your post made me laugh which.. er.. helped things along...

I had a brand new Astra, with rear parking sensors and a reversing camera. After collecting it we went to Morrison's where, reversing my bumper said hello to a stanchion. It's surprisingly common in a car you're not used to, to misjudge distance. DP thought it was hilarious and five years later still takes the piss whenever I reverse (different car now). It's a little dink, nobody hurt, don't worry about it Smile

OhToBeASeahorse · 20/08/2020 15:15

Things have also just evened out a bit, DH went shopping yesterday in part for quesadillas tonight. I also nipped to the shops at lunch today and triple checked with him that we didn't need anything.

He didnt get wraps...

My DH reversed my car back into the garage door and the garage handle created a great big dent in my car. The only reason I was furious was because he didn’t actually tell me until I asked him what the loud bang was.

When he damaged the car in other ways, I just mocked him and still do now.

Crinkle77 · 20/08/2020 15:21

Why is it worrying? Accidents happen and loads of people have little prangs.

FrenchFancie · 20/08/2020 15:27

Hey shit happens. I reversed into a lamp post in a car that was 3 weeks old (to us). DH just laughed and asked how the lamp post was!!

AWaspOnAWindowReturns · 20/08/2020 15:30

I'd blame pregnancy OP... I was definitely a worse driver when heavily pregnant. I swung into the driveway (as I had done every single bloody day, forever) and gouged the entire drivers side of the car on the gatepost, from headlight to taillight 😣 all DH could do was laugh, I felt like crying though.

lljkk · 20/08/2020 15:31

DH has hit the house at least once & the fence at least twice reversing in way too fast. Those are ones I know about.

Fence had to be replaced... Fence now has concrete posts so I really hope he doesn't hit it again.
I just shrug. Car is fine, btw!!

RuudGullitOnAShed · 20/08/2020 15:35

I reversed my car into one of the carport posts.
I could actually see it in the mirror and was thinking “I’ve come in at the wrong angle” but kept going.

DH came rushing out at the sound and while I sat with my head in my hands tried to reassure me that anyone could have made the same mistake. Grin
Obviously anyone could if they were a complete idiot!

cwtchesandprosecco · 20/08/2020 15:36

I bumped my car while pulling into our parking garage the other day.... going less that 5 miles an hour and the only damage is a tiny bit of paint missing from the front of the car but I felt awful for the rest of that day.... it really shakes you up doesn’t!? I think it’s the almighty bang it made.

My friend, who was with me, gave me some reassuring words. ‘If it had been me driving would you call me a fucking idiot?’ ‘Well..... no....’

DistinguishedCarrot · 20/08/2020 15:37

I bumped in to the house with an old car when I was with my ex. We didn't live together at the time so he didn't notice the dent for ages. When he did notice I said "what?! I've not noticed that! How on earth did that happen?? Must have been in a car park" and then he fixed it for me!

Nowadays with the current DP I'd just admit it and he'd tell me I was an idiot and probably take the piss like OP's DH has.

My DF had to sheepishly admit to reversing in to my car, not once, not twice, but continuously for about 30 seconds because he "forgot" my car was there and wondered why his car wouldn't go any further backwards. He kept revving and accelerating backwards but his car just wouldn't move... not surprising really when my drivers door was in the way! He dented it so badly I had to spend 2 days climbing in over the passenger's seat!

cdtaylornats · 20/08/2020 15:46

There is an American family on YouTube living in the UK and the wife got a ticket for speeding. Swore bling to her husband it couldn't have been her as she never speeds. Then he presented her with the speed camera photo of her in the car - blown up in a nice frame.

lanthanum · 20/08/2020 15:54

*I always drive ding-able cars.

ie cars that I won't mind too much if they get the odd dent or scrape.

Just pulling into a hedge to let someone drive past can put scrapes into the paintwork, so you can't afford to be too precious round here!*

In tight carparks, choose spaces next to dingable cars, too. Someone once scraped ours and left an apologetic note and her number - she was so relieved when I called her and said that we were quite happy just to touch up the scrape with the paint we already had.

MadameMeursault · 20/08/2020 15:54

Google the episode of Father Ted where Ted tries to hammer out a dent in his car, and suggest to DH you fix the car like that!
