Got a new (well second hand, but new for us) car in March. Much bigger than I've ever driven but I've practised in it a lot and now feel much more confident.

Today I was pulling in to our drive and completely misjudged the distance - I somehow (very slowly) drove against the corner of our bay window.

The only damage is a very neat dent in the bumper -.probably an inch and a half long. I'm so embarrassed, I've no idea how I did it.

I'm dreading telling DH. He wont be angry or anything but he will think it is a but worrying which it is really.

I could keep shtum but I've never kept anything from him.

What would you do!?!?

OhToBeASeahorse · 21/08/2020 07:49

No he wouldnt, that's why I could have lied

OP posts:
Shesapunkpunk · 21/08/2020 08:00

Why would you need to lie? If he won’t notice?

baubled · 21/08/2020 08:06

I got ours stuck on the front concrete gate post, only thing I could do was drive off it leaving a dome to the bodywork massive scratch all round the wheel arch.

I was terrified to tell DP, it was on my way to work so get sick all evening. I did ring him to pre warn but he went mental Sad actually makes me sad reading through all the responses of "DH just laughed or said as long as you're okay"

OhToBeASeahorse · 21/08/2020 08:45

As in I could have just not mentioned it - lie was the wrong word..as unsaid kn my OP, I could have just kept shtum

OP posts:
Shesapunkpunk · 21/08/2020 08:56

So do that. Who would notice an inch dent? It is not worth thinking about surely?

OhToBeASeahorse · 21/08/2020 09:10

I've already told him - its been and gone

nannybeach · 21/08/2020 10:46

When I hit this people carrier last year (roundabout her on my right, but didnt' indicate)for months I kept thinking I could have injured or killed someone, GD was in the back.In your case I would be more worried I had caused inseen damage to window frame etc.

nannybeach · 21/08/2020 11:12

Elsticate, has my DH ever had an accident, well, of course, in mine I was deemed "guilty" because she was on my right. He was driving my car a few years, we were stationary at a roundabout, white van man, obviously on his phone, came from the outside lane hit my car so hard it was unrepairable, and DH was hit in a car park, collecting me one day, massive car car,completely empty,mini bus taxi, bloke tried to drive off, not insured. So, I dont think you can blame hime for them. He,s never caused any accident, yes, I hate to say it, his driving IS perfect, he seems to have second sight, as far as cars are concerned, or yes maybe he is Mary Poppins.

gentilleprof · 21/08/2020 17:36

Tell him. If you really don't want to, just get it repaired and then tell him. Although, it might take a while. He is less likely to be cross if you have already contacted insurance and organised repair.

DianasLasso · 21/08/2020 17:39

@OhToBeASeahorse

Grin

"Just tell him" appears to be the new "Cancel the cheque."

MNetters - gotta love 'em. MNHQ even gives them a "read all of OP's posts" buttons and they still can't be arsed.

Jonas14 · 21/08/2020 17:46

If you’re heavily pregnant, that’s why. My driving was terrible in the last stages of pregnancy, seemed to lose my judgement. Particularly when reversing. Got the car stuck in a ditch and always prided myself on my reversing skills before, gah.

Diva66 · 21/08/2020 17:53

My husband backed my brand new Subaru into a garden wall. He was upset, I was relieved he wasn’t hurt. A car is just a lump of metal when all’s said and done.

If I caught him cutting paper with my sewing scissors I’d have to kill him though Grin

Justlovedogs · 21/08/2020 17:57

I fully reversed into my husband's BMW and badly dented the passenger door once. Didn't have to tell him, he was stood there watching... Blush
I blamed the dog. If the dog hadn't been sick, I would already have left for work before he got home and parked his car in the way... Hmm
Easy done, OP, these things happen. Flowers anyway.

Ezzabean · 21/08/2020 18:08

I did a similar thing recently- much bigger dent in the bumper though. DH not happy! He took it to a body shop -“bumper needs replacing” apparently - £££!!
Over the next week the dent completely popped back out on its own. I was slightly smug.

linmanuel · 21/08/2020 18:11

Take a big deep breath and tell him

I kerbed the wheel on mine
I recognise that tummy dropping sick feeling you have.

It happens

1Blue1 · 21/08/2020 18:12

I once managed to hit my mum and dads car on their drive way in one go! 🤣 I went on at an angle! The higher me and poured me a large drink. 🤣

Ken1976 · 21/08/2020 18:22

My daughters weeks old car went through our front window , assisted by the bin lorry. The driver got out but hadn’t put the handbrake on. It rolled back onto our drive putting a large gouge right up the side of my car and then backed into my daughters car which was then pushed through the wall and window of the house 😂. The poor driver was in a bit of a state . Thankfully the council paid for all of the repairs without argument

Oh fuck fuck fuck
Oh fuck fuck fuck
Feelinggoodtuesday · 21/08/2020 18:28

Haa OP. Happens to the best of us. I could bore you with the time I drove my parent’s car into a wall. Or the time I scratched my new car through the ramp at a car park, or drove another car into my neighbour’s fence. Promise I can drive!

It’s ok, just tell the truth 😂

Nurgleturtle · 21/08/2020 18:29

i went from a 3 seater to a 5 seater much bigger than what im used to second hand but it was about 1,500 pounds after my car got written off by some idiot driving in the wrong lane i wasnt used to such a long bumber drover straight into a massive barrier trying to park :L dw about it get some hot water not boiling it can damage the paint work, get some t-cut also for the scratches and a buffing pad

Mummyyyyyyyyyy · 21/08/2020 18:57

@mylittleyumyum

Make it out to be a lot worse than it is before he sees it though Grin
This is exactly what I was going to say! I once tried putting a shower curtain up, drilled hole in wrong place. Told oh that I’d taken a chunk out of the bathroom wall & do we need a plasterer etc etc. He was relieved that a blob of polyfiller did the job (as I knew it would).
FelicisNox · 21/08/2020 18:58

Omg.... I thought it was something serious!

It was a genuine accident. If your DH won't even mind then don't worry about it.

Just arrange for it to be fixed. Job done.

PamPooveysCow · 21/08/2020 19:20

@LimitIsUp

I managed to drive over a dragons tooth in a New Forest car park with my brand new Audi Q5 six years ago - galling isn't it
Sorry, you drove over a what now? Confused
roxanne119 · 21/08/2020 19:30

Stuff happens put your big girl pants on and get it over with life’s too short to worry about stuff like this . No one died 😳😬

OhToBeASeahorse · 21/08/2020 19:31

@DianasLasso ain't that the truth!!!!

OP posts:
bemusedmoose · 21/08/2020 20:10

If it had been my ex I would be worried - he would see a hairline scratch and have to put it in for a respray and I'd be bollocked big time and never allowed to forget it. But then I wasn't ever allowed to touch or have anything to do with anything he had. A decent human being wouldnt be that bothered - it's a small dent and let's face it - someone has to be the first to bang or scratch it, just happens to be you. So then it's just do you fix it or just leave it and get it sorted when there's a few dings to iron out.
