Got a new (well second hand, but new for us) car in March. Much bigger than I've ever driven but I've practised in it a lot and now feel much more confident.

Today I was pulling in to our drive and completely misjudged the distance - I somehow (very slowly) drove against the corner of our bay window.

The only damage is a very neat dent in the bumper -.probably an inch and a half long. I'm so embarrassed, I've no idea how I did it.

I'm dreading telling DH. He wont be angry or anything but he will think it is a but worrying which it is really.

I could keep shtum but I've never kept anything from him.

What would you do!?!?

@vanillandhoney

Honestly, please don't worry!

DH was once bragging about his amazing reverse parking (our drive is really awkward to reverse into) and then proceeded to drive smack bang into the garage door Grin

My mum once drove the car into the wheely bin and left a lovely dent in the back of my parents brand new car...

And I once smacked my wing mirror on a wall when I was trying to park and I got distracted by a puppy!

It happens to everyone. I don't know anyone who hasn't had a minor bump or scrape in their car - normally for the most daft reasons!

I reversed into our wheelie bin and managed to shatter the rear window glass! I must have caught the edge of the handle.

Very good driver I was driving with drove under a Coachhouse and there was a resounding BANGGGGGGGG as if the sky was falling-they’d loaded up the roof rack and it was too tall by an inch to get under the coach house.
I really thought the coach house would be cracked, but it was fine.
The roof rack was dented though

Scbchl · 20/08/2020 17:12

We got a new car and a month later I forgot to put the handbrake on and it rolled into the wall (which wasnt damaged) but the car was pretty fucked.

ClinkyMonkey · 20/08/2020 17:28

DP's auntie sold me her pristine Clio. I was over visiting her a week later and reversed into a skip opposite her house, smashing the back light. It was such a loud crunch but she didn't notice, so I never, ever told her - just bought a new tail light box, installed it and hoped she wouldn't notice the scrapes to one side of it. I know it was my car, but she had been so careful with it and one week with me ....!

79andnotout · 20/08/2020 17:29

This is one of the reasons I like to buy a (second hand) car rather than lease one. Then you don't really worry too much about any bumps or scrapes. My 12 year old beemer is full of dents and scratches, all put there by my boyfriend, not me, I might add. I just roll my eyes whenever he adds a new one.

FizzyPink · 20/08/2020 17:33

When DP and I first started dating I scraped his white car alongside a red one in the Aldi car park resulting in a big red scrape along the side. I read online that you could try whitening toothpaste and it worked and he never knew!

Several months later I melted his TV with a candle, went and bought a replacement, got it all set up on the wall, placed the same candle underneath it and melted the replacement Blush

Worstyear2020 · 20/08/2020 17:43

I must have no shame, I will tell him without feeling too much guilt Grin

AudTheDeepMinded · 20/08/2020 17:46

I got our car stuck on a friend's gate post, it had to be jacked up to be 'unstuck'. I'm still not entirely sure how I managed it. DH did not have a leg to stand on as the previous day he'd got some wood from B and Q and shot the length of it through to the front of the car, cracking the windscreen! Accidents happen.

Lie and tell him someone must have done it while you were parked in a car park 😆😂🤣👍🏻

I have been using iPhones for years - my DH is a big Apple fan and all our stuff is Apple. I'd love to try an Android phone (Apple is so limited and menus so unintuitive - I keep looking stuff up I want to do to be told "oh you can't do that on an iPhone") iTunes is such a bloody nightmare I've switched to Spotify. my DH keeps telling me Androids "have more holes than Swiss cheese". Anyone got an Android and had any major security issues? Smile

Malaya · 20/08/2020 18:00

I’d love to say my dh would do the same as yours. He’d probably burst out laughing, take a picture, whatsapp it to the family and friends group chat and they’d all take the piss out of me for at least a week. My own fault really because I always take the piss out of everyone’s driving skills and claim to be the better driver out of me and dh!

EnglishRain · 20/08/2020 18:05

A week before we moved out of our first house I misjudged the driveway and scraped my car on the wooden gate. It was rotten, so my car didn't come off too badly. But what an idiot, a week before we were leaving too!

Glad he took it well.

InTheShadowOfTheMushroomCloud · 20/08/2020 18:06

I wrote off our brand new car and caravan on the motorway last year. We were both in the car. Nearly killed my DH.
He wasn't cross. He was happy I wasn't hurt.

Arthersleep · 20/08/2020 18:10

I just can't get worked up about cars I'm afraid. Mine has a big dent/scratch where I misjudged our gate post. Didn't think to mention it to DH as I knew that he wouldn't have been bothered. It still works perfectly fine and gets us from A to B! I've never really understood the fear that women have of telling their husbands things like this. If you're going to tell him, tell him that the good news is that your bay window and you are both fine and that, having tested it out, you have discovered that the bumper works, just as it should do!

mineofuselessinformation · 20/08/2020 18:12

It could be worse....
XMIL drove into my car years back,^^ then came in to tell now XH 'I've hit your car', and never paid a single penny towards the repair. Shock

BlusteryShowers · 20/08/2020 18:16

The thought of it is always much worse than it is- you did the right thing by telling him and he's reacted completely normally.

I hope it dings out! I did similar with a Ford Ka and I managed to push it back out too.

Elasticate · 20/08/2020 18:16

@nannybeach that's terrible. Wasn't your dh happy that neither you nor your granddaughter were hurt? Has he never had an accident? Or he is Mary Poppins?

It wouldn't occur to me not to tell DH about a prang or any type of traffic incident. He's had accidents, I've had accidents. Luckily we were never hurt and didn't hurt anyone else. We were certainly never cross with each other about any of them.

Smallsteps88 · 20/08/2020 18:20

How odd. Unless it’s solely your husband’s car I don’t understand why you’re worried about telling him. He isn’t your parent. In fact even if it is solely his car, its Just a scratch. It can be repaired. What’s the problem?

Smallsteps88 · 20/08/2020 18:24

GD says don't tell GD, well, of course, we had to swap details. When I got home I felt sick, dry mouth, as predicted, (it was his car) he went absolutely mental, so angry.

It’s really worrying that even your GD was scared of her grandfathers reaction.

theluckiest · 20/08/2020 18:24

@OhToBeASeahorse

Well this is all very reassuring, thanks everyone

@mbosnz this may be far too much information but I'm heavily pregnant and constipated and your post made me laugh which.. er.. helped things along...

Ah. My spacial awareness went out of the window completely when I was heavily pg.

I recall sobbing when I tried to parallel park and just couldn't do it!!! DH had to do it for me and I was mortified. Really cross with myself.

Think I also reversed into a litter bin. To be fair, I couldn't see it out of the rear view mirror.

That said, I also couldn't walk into a room without banging a shin or scraping my bump on something (bump was bloody huge). Grin

Glad it's all sorted OP.

OhToBeASeahorse · 20/08/2020 18:28

@theluckiest maybe you are right - I did come back in and almost immediately trip over a toy of DS'!

I'll blame the bump!

Shit, that was lucky neither of you were killed 🌷

But what did you do?!

mbosnz · 20/08/2020 18:56

I'm glad I could be of assistance OP!

Like theluckiest, my spatial awareness went out the window when pregnant. As did my ability to locate my car. . .

AppleStars · 20/08/2020 19:03

I scraped the whole passenger side door along a concrete pillar reversing into a parking space Blush.

About a month later we moved house and my DP misjudged the driveway and reversed into the hedge, a branch got wedged in the rear bumper somehow and ripped the whole thing off when he moved forward.

I would say far more people than you think have had similar mishaps, it's just a car, no ones hurt and it'll be an amusing anecdote to tell the baby one day!

JonHammIsMyJamm · 20/08/2020 19:15

Glad you told him and he was a normal person about it, @OhToBeASeahorse.

FWIW, both DH and I have driven into our house over the years (tight drive, new cars, misjudged the distance and scraped the front). Meh, not the end of the world.
