Got a new (well second hand, but new for us) car in March. Much bigger than I've ever driven but I've practised in it a lot and now feel much more confident.

Today I was pulling in to our drive and completely misjudged the distance - I somehow (very slowly) drove against the corner of our bay window.

The only damage is a very neat dent in the bumper -.probably an inch and a half long. I'm so embarrassed, I've no idea how I did it.

I'm dreading telling DH. He wont be angry or anything but he will think it is a but worrying which it is really.

I could keep shtum but I've never kept anything from him.

What would you do!?!?

In tight carparks, choose spaces next to dingable cars, too.

In tight carparks, I always park next to the newest, flashest car I can find. Those drivers are the ones who WON'T open their door into my car, because they won't want to chip their own paintwork.

Whereas an old car, the driver won't care.

Sh1tsandgiggl3s · 20/08/2020 15:57

It's always best to own up, your husband seems lovely and really reasonable a bumper can always be replaced. It could be worse... I went through the bay window! Car was left in gear I didn't check before starting the car and BOOM in we went! Lesson learnt I always check the gear stick now. 😬🤦🏻‍♀️

moanyhole · 20/08/2020 15:57

Dh once parked his car behind mine. I reversed into it, took the bumper off his and massive dent to the backside of mine. Told him it was his fault for parking behind me Grin

he rolled his eyes and said as long as youre ok!

Staffy1 · 20/08/2020 16:02

@mylittleyumyum

Make it out to be a lot worse than it is before he sees it though Grin
Grin Will definitely do this if I'm ever in a situation like this.
CambsAlways · 20/08/2020 16:07

See everyone makes mistakes no biggie

Geekster1963 · 20/08/2020 16:10

Tell him, it was an accident and not like you weren’t being careful. I remember when I was a kid and my Mum drove the car into the garage while the car boot was still open and she managed to bend the garage door in half. The car was fine and she was like I’ll have to tell your Dad. He was fine about it.

Sunnydayhere · 20/08/2020 16:12

Hot water and sucker pads.

Ebay sell dent removing sucker pads - they work reasonably well - and are quite cheap. (Less than a pint) Tutorials on you tube.

SunshineCake · 20/08/2020 16:14

I fretted for days about telling dh about a dent in my door. No idea how I had done it but assumed it was me. When I eventually told him he said oh yes, that was me. I forgot to tell you. Grrrrr.

Fishyfinger · 20/08/2020 16:14

I've had many, many minor dings - both in my own car and DH's.

I once even drove into a brand new car in the dealership car park. Ooops! That one cost me big!

It happens - no one got hurt which is the most important thing . Just pride Grin

Bunnybigears · 20/08/2020 16:16

These things happen. DH managed to shatter the rear window in our new to us car on the day we got it my reversing in to our own wheelie bin.

WeEE · 20/08/2020 16:22

That's hilarious. I wouldn't tell him if he definitely won't notice.

Although maybe don't listen to my advice. I reveres in to the nursery wall when picking my child up 🙈. I parked up to check, and thought there was no damage, so didn't say anything. A few weeks later my partner asked why the back light was all smashed in and got me to pay for a new one! Probably should've been honest 😂

Geekster1963 · 20/08/2020 16:24

The first time I ever drove my Dad took me to the supermarket car park, all was going well until I crashed into the fence (At slow speed) and ripped the wing off! My Dad didn’t get cross he said he should have shown me how to use the brakes. Funnily enough he never took my sisters out to practice until they had had a few ‘proper’ lessons.

drspouse · 20/08/2020 16:27

I scraped the side door of our car last August, we went on holiday shortly after and got it mended when we came back.
Guess what's booked in for the car when we get back from the current holiday?

pussycatinboots · 20/08/2020 16:28

@OhToBeASeahorse

He's now decided to just take the piss out of me and has invited me to go and smash up our other car.. git...
A keeper indeed! Grin

But look at it another way - you didn't damage the bay window. That would take more than a can of spray paint to fix!

ArabellaScott · 20/08/2020 16:28

I have a lovely garage near me that are very kind at sorting out dings, scratches, bumps, etc. Take it along to a garage that sells all the polish and doodads and ask what thy can do.

vanillandhoney · 20/08/2020 16:28

Honestly, please don't worry!

DH was once bragging about his amazing reverse parking (our drive is really awkward to reverse into) and then proceeded to drive smack bang into the garage door Grin

My mum once drove the car into the wheely bin and left a lovely dent in the back of my parents brand new car...

And I once smacked my wing mirror on a wall when I was trying to park and I got distracted by a puppy!

It happens to everyone. I don't know anyone who hasn't had a minor bump or scrape in their car - normally for the most daft reasons!

SpaceSharkTea · 20/08/2020 16:29

I would do exactly this GrinHalo
Valleydad99 · 20/08/2020 16:29

Brand new car - swung into drive, forgot car was wider and caught concrete gatepost. Huuuuuge scratch down the side. Cost me £250 I didn't really have to sort it out. Much embarrassment, wife (gf at time) laughed then bought me chocolate.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 20/08/2020 16:41

I managed to reverse along a lamp post the day before we were going on holiday. The side of the car was covered in some sort of tar stuff and I'd stripped the paintwork back to the metal and also needed a new alloy. All because I thought I knew better than the parking sensors...

jessstan2 · 20/08/2020 16:44

Typical.
Thecobwebsarewinning · 20/08/2020 16:55

That’s what bumpers are for. Tell him.

hastingsmua1 · 20/08/2020 16:58

There’s tricks on YouTube to remove dents

oakleaffy · 20/08/2020 16:58

Tell him, honesty is best policy, he will find a lie far worse- I’m not the biggest fan of long cars🙃
Mum has a tiny car that has parking sensors, as does bro- they look like they make parking much easier.
Even Uber confident men get me to
Guide them in to tight spots😂

Amber0685 · 20/08/2020 17:01

I closed the garage door on the car as I was driving in. The remote to the garage and gate were on the same fob and I was trying to close the gate.

nannybeach · 20/08/2020 17:02

I commited the crime of the century last year, driving 40 years, only one prang when I first learnt, (passed test with Police)DH car, it was pouring with rain, had DGD in the back, pitch dark, big people carrier at the roundabout didnt indicate, but was well round before I got there, did an emergency stop, hit the side, felt sick!!GD says don't tell GD, well, of course, we had to swap details. When I got home I felt sick, dry mouth, as predicted, (it was his car) he went absolutely mental, so angry. My MIL, hit something in her (late) DH s car, and she pretended someone must have hit it while in was outside their house, I wouldnt be able to do that, even if there was no-one else involved.
