Hidden gems from the Chinese takeaway

We're getting a take out tonight and I want to try new things. I've being trying to branch out from my regulars;
Crispy chilli beef
Sweet and sour chicken balls
Lamb in black bean sauce
Chow mein
Prawn roast

I know it's standard but it never fails. What else are your secret top dishes?
OP I could write a book on the Chilli Squid I have eaten but without doubt this is the best in the world (with the worst loo in the world). Enjoy losing your chilli squid virginity! foursquare.com/v/ming-kee-seafood-restaurant-%E6%98%8E%E8%A8%98%E6%B5%B7%E9%AE%AE%E9%85%92%E5%AE%B6/4b25f443f964a520bf7724e3
Even better than chilli squid is chilli crab.

My DF took me to Under Bridge Chilli Crab in Hong Kong for dinner after ExH turned out to be a lying, cheating scumbag. The crab was amazing but even more cathartic was a post dinner visit to the villain hitting ladies under the bridge:

Thank goodness, emily! I hate thinking I have upset people or caused offence.

It was bloody ignorance!

My local Chinese do salt and pepper Birdseye waffles.

Oooh following for inspiration!
and drooling, love Chinese takeaway
I'm always dead boring and go for the same things - keep saying every time going to try something new and never do! Grin

My usuals are
spring rolls, prawn crackers, and either Chinese curry or sweet and sour chicken balls.

Mrsdoubtfireswig · 25/07/2020 23:30

Salt and pepper Sui mai

Duck stuffed with prawn

Delicious !

IHaveBrilloHair · 25/07/2020 23:37

I'm definitely going to try some of these next time we have a Chinese takeaway.
My Singapore rice noodles will still be included though, and seaweed.

catinb0oots · 26/07/2020 02:09

Okay okay I ate the takeaway and drank the wine and fell ASLEEP!

I had salt and pepper squid. Oh my god lush. Crispy lamb. Singapore special noodles. Kung po chicken. And for the Boringtons I had special fried rice and mini spring rolls.

Going to go to sleep now with a full tum

I think I'm going to have to have Chinese every night for the next month to try out all these suggestions

You sound like me Grin
I'd totally do the takeaway and wine coma lol
Salt and pepper squid sounds nice, never had squid will have to try

justilou1 · 26/07/2020 06:00

San Choi Bao - lettuce cups with spicy minced beef, veg & noodles (to die for)

QuestionableMouse · 26/07/2020 06:13

This makes me sad. I bloody love a Chinese takeaway but the last couple of times I had a really bad reaction to it. 😔

Salt and pepper beef is my absolute favourite. Lemon chicken is a close second!

justilou1 · 26/07/2020 07:54

Bet you’re allergic to MSG @QuestionableMouse

XiCi · 26/07/2020 09:06

What type of reaction QuestionableMouse?

It's likely to be the MSG, you can just ask the restaurant/takeaway for no MSG. It's a common food intolerance

ShanghaiDiva · 26/07/2020 09:33

Lamb is also very popular in west of China.

Emilyontmoor · 26/07/2020 10:18

Goingover Thanks for the article! I remember the ladies but never knew their full story. I wonder if they do mail order.....

On Lamb, if you are lucky enough to have a restaurant specialising in the cuisine of northern China then Lamb and Cumin skewers are one of our favourites.

Emilyontmoor · 26/07/2020 10:28

Chinatown has opened up for socially distanced eating outside. If you follow Fuchsia Dunlop on Instagram she had Dim Sum there a week or so ago and it looked civilised and safe. Actually it looked more civilised and safe than our High Street 🙄

QuestionableMouse · 26/07/2020 10:40

Migraine unfortunately. It can also give me stomach cramps. I don't think it's MSG as I've eaten that in other stuff with no problems. I think it's the oil.

justilou1 · 26/07/2020 10:40

Can still cause migraines. They are a known allergic response

Titsywoo · 26/07/2020 16:03

I'm actually quite tempted to make my own salt and pepper wings now. This site has some really good recipes for Asian dishes - they do have a chicken wing recipe I have just seen thewoksoflife.com/

The problem with my local chinese restaurant is they have become delivery only during covid and minimum order is £25 - I'm the only one in the house that orders so I have to buy loads more than I would eat then have lots of leftovers.

louisethedisease · 26/07/2020 17:44

I've just ordered salt and chilli chicken thanks to this thread. Hope I like it. Favourite before this was smoked chicken but it's hard to come by.

MillicentMartha · 26/07/2020 18:05

@Titsywoo, DS has sweet and sour chicken balls and chips, just doesn’t use the sweet and sour sauce.
