Hidden gems from the Chinese takeaway

We're getting a take out tonight and I want to try new things. I've being trying to branch out from my regulars;
Crispy chilli beef
Sweet and sour chicken balls
Lamb in black bean sauce
Chow mein
Prawn roast

I know it's standard but it never fails. What else are your secret top dishes?

What a racist idiot that poster is Hmm

I remember a comedy sketch about it saying that who on earth believed the Chinese takeaway killed cats for their meals when they could just pop more easily to Tesco HmmGrin

Letsleepingdogslie8 · 25/07/2020 18:22

@Leflic DH has just told me that lamb is very popular in northern China especially when braised with chillis and dried bean curd.

BiggerBoat1 · 25/07/2020 18:23

Crispy seaweed is the food of the gods.
Chicken in yellow bean sauce and cashews
Singapore Noodles
Hot and Sour Soup

God I want a Chinese now Grin

*i would look up the farming standards in china first before ordering any takeaway..because rest assured the ingredients are not local and you might end up with bat, snake and god knows what mixed in with your "beef" "duck" or "chicken"..Bon appetite"

Absolutely roaring here. Yes, my local Chinese does all of their meat shopping in China, rather than at the local cash and carry, because it's soooo much more cost effective to travel over 4000 miles instead of going to Makro or Costco Grin

PS. It's "bon appetit".

Whenwillthisbeover · 25/07/2020 18:28

Yes to the Kung Po chicken and salt and pepper squid as mentioned above.

I also love, but not sure if i have had it here (regular on menu in US) General Tso chicken.

So apologies for telling you my favourite which you probably have no chance of getting from your local takeaway.

JonHammIsMyJamm · 25/07/2020 18:29

Grin @JoeCalFuckingZaghe

Meat/veg/fish of your choice with ginger & spring onions (I go king prawn).
Chicken & cashew nuts.
Szechuan king prawn
Special curry & chips (naff but delicious)
Singapore fried rice or noodles (both are ace).

Polly2345 · 25/07/2020 18:37

Duck pancakes

Passmethecrisps · 25/07/2020 18:39

This thread is torture. My stomach is rumbling but I am stuck in the car and my husband hates Chinese food.

I might have to stomp my foot when we get home.

So maybe my question would be what to order someone who doesn’t like Chinese food?

topcat2014 · 25/07/2020 18:39

Hot and sour soup

GameSetMatch · 25/07/2020 18:42

King prawn in yellow bean sauce
Salt and chilli king prawn
Crispy crab claws

BeeTrees · 25/07/2020 18:43

Seaweed
(I know it’s cabbage, but not complete without this)

DefinatelyAWeeGobshite · 25/07/2020 18:43

My new favourite is honey chilli chicken or some combination of that with noodles

MMN123 · 25/07/2020 18:44

Smoked shredded chicken

Bearsbearsbears40 · 25/07/2020 18:47

Ooh I love Chinese food but we’ve just ordered curry for tonight (sobs).

Agree with all the salt and chilli suggestions above. When we visit friends we always get something called tea smoked chicken (I think) from their local takeaway and it’s amazing. Unfortunately that takeaway is 200 miles away from home!

Standrewsschool · 25/07/2020 18:50

Crispy chicken

DancingInDespair · 25/07/2020 18:52

Chinese chicken curry.

Jayaywhynot · 25/07/2020 18:52

Salt and pepper munchie box,
Ribs, salt and pepper chips, chicken, wings, legs, breast, prawn toast, tempura vegetables, pot of curry sauce and egg fried rice, family size is £17.50, delicious!

Emilyontmoor · 25/07/2020 18:53

OP I could write a book on the Chilli Squid I have eaten but without doubt this is the best in the world (with the worst loo in the world). Enjoy losing your chilli squid virginity! foursquare.com/v/ming-kee-seafood-restaurant-%E6%98%8E%E8%A8%98%E6%B5%B7%E9%AE%AE%E9%85%92%E5%AE%B6/4b25f443f964a520bf7724e3

Indoctro · 25/07/2020 18:56

Foo yung if you like eggs

Chicken or vegetable foo yung

Bloops · 25/07/2020 18:56

Char siu pork

Bowerbird5 · 25/07/2020 18:58

Duck and spring onion pancakes
Lemon chicken - our take away gives you two breasts of chicken and their lemon sauce is the best I have tasted.
Singapore noodles and I have had them in Singapore every time from one of the street vendors....mmmmm!
Chicken and vegetable soup at the restaurant in Singapore airport it is a real “pick me up”when your flagging on long haul flights.
Beef in black bean sauce.
King prawns with pickled ginger and pineapple.

My dad’s Aniseed Pork and we never asked him and have never found a written recipe. His Chinese friend said my dad was the best Chinese cook that wasn’t Chinese! All I know is that it was loin and it sat in the fridge marinating for about three days. It was melt in your mouth and so delicious. I wish I could eat it again.

@Passmethecrisps.
Does your Chinese do omelettes and chips?
Get him that and eat all your good food yourself Grin

Crispy lamb but in lettuce wraps not pancakes. I’m a total carb-head but the combination of the heavy fried lamb and the fresh crunchy lettuce is amazing.

Chicken in peking sauce is great too, like a sweeter version of sweet n sour.
