What tip have you heard about and been incredulous when it actually works?

I saw on Twitter that filling a ziplock bag with water and a few coins and hanging it in a doorway/placing it on the doorstep will keep flies out. It seemed such a bizarre suggestion that I thought I would try it and can confirm it works. I've also hung one near the bins and there hasn't been any flies around for a week.
Are there any other tips that I should know?

The grout in my bathroom has turned orange. I think it's stained with mould. Bleach hasn't sorted it.
Any solutions?

If a sneeze gets stuck, look at a bright light and you will bring the sneeze on.

The trigeminal nerve, which makes you sneeze, is right next to the optic nerve so stimulating the optic nerve with the bright light, triggers the trigeminal nerve and releases the sneeze.

You're welcome. Grin

Are you in a hard water area? Mine used to do that before we fitted a softener.

I read somewhere its calcium build up which traps mould spores underneath, so bleach doesn't reach it.

Had an offer accepted on a house but they have kittens and the carpet is all clawed. Is there any way of rescuing it or do I need to buy a new carpet?

kerrymucklowe2020 · 07/08/2020 00:56

I use dried out baby wipes as dusters.

It doesn't quite fit in, but a cost-saving, time-saving hack. Grout pens. They are fantastic.

I bought two from Amazon (there's lots of different colours) and went over my whole bathroom, still looks great all these weeks later.
You just draw over your grout with the pen and leave it to dry for 6 hours.
Bathroom looks brand new.

I usually scrub mine with a nail brush and flash and it usually comes up white again. You could try that with bleach too I suppose, but I can't as I'm highly reactive to it.

Failing that there is always grout pens, which really do work.

The orange grout is easily sorted with a strong bleach spray. The ones that say they’re for black mould. I know Astonish do one, as do Cillit Bang. Just spray and ignore for ten mins then use an old toothbrush to give an extra scrub if need be.

My niece was very car sick on anything but very short journeys. Someone said sit her on brown paper and she won't be sick. Tried it and it worked.

Uhtredswoman · 07/08/2020 09:24

Have just tried the burrito roll duvet cover change, and it took waaay longer than my usual stuff-and-flick method 😂😂 would have been useful post abdominal surgery though, when I couldn't flick!

Do have a bag of water and pennies hanging in my window, though! 😀

kerrymucklowe2020 · 07/08/2020 09:53

Also works with newspaper (used to be a beaver leader and used it on many a coach trip and it never failed)
RiftGibbon · 07/08/2020 19:06

How does the brown paper/newspaper work with regard to travel sickness? I'm okay in cars, but this could be really useful.

Lakeland brush on mould gel is the business, fabulous for grout and sealant and I used it on a window that went mildewy.

MabelChiltern1 · 07/08/2020 20:06

I’ve got one! Squirt a blast of Method spay onto flies. They don’t like it....they just fall on the floor and give up .. then I use loo roll or kitchen roll to escort them to the bin. Quick and I always have Method to hand in the kitchen. Don’t spray over food etc obvs .

Anyone got any ideas on how to clean a soundbar?

Furball · 07/08/2020 22:25

@Piratetree

If anyone has one to get the greasy marks off walls where dc have splattered food etc I will be forever grateful. I’ve tried washing up liquid, bicarbonate of soda, vinegar, magic eraser, elbow grease (both the product and the action) and the stains remain. Even more annoying as I have got to them all straight away.
@Piratetree

You may find that the grease comes through the fresh paint. This has happened to me, I found that using a 'damp stop' paint on the mark, then painting over that in the walls colour stops it. It is a faff, but I found painting over it normally before the damp stop paint just enabled it to bleed through.

GellerYeller · 07/08/2020 22:41

@kerrymucklowe2020 I've seen car valeters roll balls of blu tack or plasticine in small nooks and crannies the vacuum won't reach, including over speakers so it lifts away dust. Would that work?

kerrymucklowe2020 · 08/08/2020 00:09

*GellerYeller" Thanks- will give it a try

Prettybluepigeons · 08/08/2020 00:12

If your iron gets burnt on gunk I it, rubbing paracetamol tablet on it gets it clean.

CaptainMyCaptain · 08/08/2020 07:46

@Wallywobbles

Just remembered this one. You should store soap for at least a year to dry. It lasts way longer. I don't think it's the glycerine based ones though.
We always keep the soap in the airing cupboard to dry it before use.

Safer than rubbing the paracetamol on the iron is to put the tablet on a cloth and iron over it. It really does work.

Neat fabric conditioner on stainless steel, works a treat on my extractor hood - no streaks.

drinkingwineoutofamug · 08/08/2020 17:03

Any tips for removing old sealant on windows?
Tried the pink stuff and gentle scrapping
