What tip have you heard about and been incredulous when it actually works?

I saw on Twitter that filling a ziplock bag with water and a few coins and hanging it in a doorway/placing it on the doorstep will keep flies out. It seemed such a bizarre suggestion that I thought I would try it and can confirm it works. I've also hung one near the bins and there hasn't been any flies around for a week.
Are there any other tips that I should know?

@Twigaletta I used the cider vinegar trick to massively impressive effect not a month ago. I used a jam jar, centimetre of vinegar and a little squeeze of washing up liquid (breaks surface tension). Don't shake. Cover it in cling film and poked holes. Within hours I had about 30 of the buggers. Needs refreshed everyday but tbh I caught 90% in the first hour.

If you need to have dental X-rays done and have a strong gag reflex lift one leg off the treatment couch. For some reason it works a treat

IncrediblySadToo · 17/08/2020 08:31

@LoisWilkersonslastnerve

Rubbing your tongue on the roof of your mouth stops you crying.
I'm going to try this one.

It really annoys me when I cry when I don't want to.

@hiredandsqueak

No just coppers and I put a couple of five pences in just in case it needed to be silver coins
It didn't work for me, in fact the little sofa just tested on the bag!!
IncrediblySadToo · 17/08/2020 08:37

@LunaNorth

Put milk on an ink stain.

I wore a cream shirt to work - big mistake. Massive ink stain.

Dabbed it with milk and it disappeared.

Yep. This definitely works on biro/felt tip pens/highlighters etc. I just soak for a while (use a small pot with milk and put the stained bit in) then wash

*important to note, when you take it out of the milk, it looks like is hasn't worked - you need to wash it for the ink to go!

@SkiingIsHeaven

If you have something in your eye, pull the bottom lid down as far as you can and do a massive sniff. Clears your eye instantly.
Bizarre.

It's going to be ages before I get something in my eye now isn't it!!

And I can confirm the 'fairy liquid' on grease stains

Sunlight removing most stains

Yes, I'm a grub with grublings - thankfully I can get most stains out 😊

@kerrymucklowe2020

Had an offer accepted on a house but they have kittens and the carpet is all clawed. Is there any way of rescuing it or do I need to buy a new carpet?
Depends whether you git more money or more time/patience ?!

Razor blade & nail scissors you can cut/shave away the fluff/pulls, but it's time consuming

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 17/08/2020 10:09

Only wash onion and garlic hands in COLD water (preferably with some stainless steel), smell is gone! Hot water seems to cook it on your skin and make it stay.

Twigaletta · 17/08/2020 13:14

I have a jam jar so will give it a go! Malin52

To the PP who suggested that putting two 20 pence coins in a trolley will unlock it - I can confirm that it does not, and I am now 40 pence worse off for my experiment Grin

Using the top of my key did work though! (thank goodness that didn't get stuck!)

lborgia · 23/08/2020 01:24

@TroysMammy - not sure if anyone got back to you about this, but get a metal spoon and clench it between your teeth whilst chopping onions. ‘

I will swear to any deity you like that this works. I look as stupid doing it now as I did 25 years ago, but it works. I was told a teaspoon, but it’s actually more comfortable to use a bigger spoon and hold it in between your teeth like a tango dancer with a rose!

SaltyLou · 23/08/2020 01:26

Peppermint oil sprayed in your house treaty reduces risk of spiders

SaltyLou · 23/08/2020 01:27

Greatly

SaltyLou · 23/08/2020 01:29

@lborgia I use a fork and it works.

lborgia · 23/08/2020 04:26

@Saltylou, yes, I was going to explain about cutlery generally, but realised that was further investment! I assume it's the metal?

lborgia · 23/08/2020 04:29

Ha!!! I've looked it up! The volatile chemicals bind with the metal before getting to your eyes. So maybe a big spoon or fork is actually better??

Mashingthecompost · 23/08/2020 08:48

@Bridecilla if you want more info try looking up Janet Lansbury, she talks about this way of parenting a lot. I will add a caveat that it doesn't work for my son. He just got frustrated that I knew what he wanted (as proven by me repeating it back to him) but I wasn't doing anything about it. Something else that backfired: He was sad about us moving house and I tried something called... wish fulfilment thinking or something? Where you say "ah yes, wouldn't it be lovely if we could {hatch elaborate made-up plan}? Wouldn't it be great if that was possible?" and at the end of it he was ready to go, like 'yeah, let's kick those impostors out of our old house and barricade the door and tell the police where to shove their laws...' sigh. If the child you're working with is very literal, you might find yourself in a tangle. With some kids it's enough to be able to stop and have their wishes considered, and explore them in their minds for some relief. For others, it makes things worse. I hope it helps though, it's lovely to know there are teachers wanting to work with kids in this way!

Mashingthecompost · 23/08/2020 08:58

Omg @bridecilla I needed that sweaty pits tip so badly! I've tried soaking things in the bath to get all the crud out and all sorts. Thank you!

Imissmoominmama · 23/08/2020 09:03

@Mashingthecompost- we used THRIVE at the school (PRU) where I worked. It was really successful.

LadyEloise · 14/11/2020 17:06

To the Mumsnetter who recommended I put Fairy liquid on a grease stain (that had not come out of a cotton dress despite being washed with bio detergent ) and rewashing. Thank you.
It works.

Thewithesarehere · 14/11/2020 17:15

@ComeOnGordon

A friend taught me to defrost the freezer with a hairdryer. It’s a game changer. Put all the freezer food in the fridge, switch the freezer off then aim the hairdryer at the ice. Job done in 30 mins and the freezer stuff that was in the fridge hasn’t defrosted so can go straight back in
Desirable not damage the freezer?
FinallyHere · 14/11/2020 17:16

Yoga. 1. Actually doing it rather than just buying a yoga mat and wearing yoga pants round the house 2. Doing 30 mins every day 3. Actually listening and breathing when and how she says.

Going to try this one ... someday

Mashingthecompost · 17/11/2020 14:58

@Imissmoominmama Didn't see your post til just now - thank you! Some more stuff has developed with DS since I wrote that, v grateful for any suggestions of new approaches.

Constance1 · 17/11/2020 20:29

I had plantar fasciitis for months and couldn't get rid of it. I read a trick posted on mumsnet where first thing when you wake up you sit on the side of your bed and pick up a pencil from the floor with your toes and straighten your leg while your toes are gripping the pencil and repeat 10 times. After a couple of days doing this I was cured - I couldn't believe it!

Ragwort · 17/11/2020 20:33

Rubbing a copper coin on limescale marks on taps - it does work, found on Mumsnet!
