What tip have you heard about and been incredulous when it actually works?

I saw on Twitter that filling a ziplock bag with water and a few coins and hanging it in a doorway/placing it on the doorstep will keep flies out. It seemed such a bizarre suggestion that I thought I would try it and can confirm it works. I've also hung one near the bins and there hasn't been any flies around for a week.
Are there any other tips that I should know?

LadyEloise do you then take them out of the boiling water and rub/dry them, or do you leave them in until the water cools and then just dry them? I have MS and can't do anything that requires making a fist/doing that pincer thing, and then applying pressure; hence something which meant that I didn''t have to rub the silver would be really helpful.

DontDoItGeorge · 28/07/2020 15:41

@KitchenDancefloor Try some hand sanitizer gel on the windowsill.

Hand sanitizer gel on a cloth gets rid of glue residue like old sellotape or sticky labels.

Cricket whites covered in grass stains? After years of soaking in various cleaners I now spray stain with flash bleach spray. A quick spray and a normal wash gets the stain out every time.

The 2p on limescale one that I read about on this thread. I've just got round to trying it and it's blown my tiny mind haha!!

Thankyou!!!

LadyEloise · 28/07/2020 16:15

I just take the object out and dry it

You're very welcome! It's actually a Hinch special and worth a big share x

@puzzledpiece

Boiling water (what's left over in the kettle after you've used it) poured onto the weeds/grass etc, inbetween your paving slabs, kills off the weeds in a couple of days. Saw this in a gardening program and it really works. Chemical free too.
This really works, I'm currently trying to find more weeds to try it on Smile

Anyone got a good way to clean a chenille fabric headboard? I tried carpet shampoo but that didn’t work.

sueelleker · 29/07/2020 18:20

Dry shampoo?

BendyLikeBeckham · 29/07/2020 21:58

@goody2shooz try a capful of fabric softener in a bowl of water. Soak and squeeze out a soft cloth in it and rub it when damp all over the chenille, going a bit more vigorously over any marks, and rinsing/squeezing it out several times. It should clean it up a treat, lift the pile and make it smell lovely.

iknowimcoming · 30/07/2020 00:17

Tumble dryer lint makes amazing fire lighters - just save old loo roll or kitchen roll tubes and stuff the lint in firmly et voila (apparently fabric softener is very flammable so that's what does it)

My other tip is writing on stuff, write on the labels of duvets and duvet covers long side or short side depending on where they are and never struggle with which way round the duvet goes again, same with fitted sheets etc I also write whose is whose so when I swap from winter to summer duvets it's easy to swap over

Write on recipes info for next time you make it, stuff like add less/more chilli, use the non-stick tray, needs longer to cook than the recipe says etc use a pencil if writing on books offends you!

Haven't read the whole thread yet so apologies if you've talked about this.
Conkers repel spiders!

So, in the autumn when all the spiders come out to play in our houses (and scare my adult DD witless) a dish with a few conkers in deters them. Luckily, conkers are in abundance when spiders are - collect some (conkers) and leave on window ledges...it works!

If you add your black or dark indigo denim wrong side out jeans to your washer with 280 grams of table salt for an hour or so and let them soak, it’ll set the colour.
You can also use a cup of hot white vinegar.

@DreamTheMoors stupid question alert: how do you let them soak in the washer? Surely it'll be rinsed out pretty quickly during the cycle?
BendyLikeBeckham · 30/07/2020 11:12

is that only brand new jeans?

Ragwort · 30/07/2020 11:16

Agree with the 2p coin recommendation- was sceptical at first but it really works! Will safe me a fortune not buying all these "lime scale remover" products .... none of which work.

Roomba · 30/07/2020 11:23

To open tricky jars, I always put a teaspoon or edge of a blunt knife under the rim and gently lever it until I hear a 'pop' and the middle bit of the lid pops up a bit. The jar is then easy to open as the seal has broken, relieving the pressure holding it shut so tight. It has worked every time for me, for years. I tried all the other methods (running hot water over it, using rubber gloves, bashing the rim on an edge etc) but this is the only reliable method that has always worked for me. I have bent a couple of cheap flimsy spoons doing it though, so take care to use a sturdy utensil.

Any tips for getting yellow sun cream stains out of white t shirts please?

morriseysquif · 30/07/2020 12:42

Try elbow grease spray or any heavy duty kitchen cleaner as they will have degreasing properties. Neat fairy liquid too, not just any washing up liquid, which? says Fairy has the best degreasing properties.

If your car windows steam up or get damp at night, these really work: www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B07DQQTM77?psc=1&ref=ppx_pop_mob_b_asin_title&tag=mumsnetforu03-21

I've a question about the banana skin for verruca one ... I'm a week I too ski on the verruca secures with breathable tape (the medical stuff that looks like masking tape) and I'm at the stage now where they've become "holes" in my foot (strangely fascinating ). As the plaster is black from the banana and even though I've scrubbed my foot there are lots of black flecks in and around I think from the skin -

How do I know when it's gone?

Should I do anything in the day with them? I tend to clean them then either just pop a sock on or put neat tea tree oil in some cotton wolol fastened with a plaster. I read somewhere it helps Confused

I'm so so fed up with them, it's been 2 years now and I feel like a leper. Oddly though neither DD or DH have caught them from me!

drinkingwineoutofamug · 30/07/2020 16:57

Only just found out that in my washing machine detergent drawer, there is a little flap that you press to get the drawer out ! Game changer!!

DreamTheMoors · 31/07/2020 03:05

@elephantskiss

Hi - not a stupid question. Can you stop or pause your washer after it agitates a bit? That’s what I do. If that’s not possible you can always do it in the tub. Or the kitchen sink if it’s big enough.
I apologize elephant - I should’ve said that in the first place.

Eliards2012 · 31/07/2020 04:37

When my daughter came running inside after playing with bright red food dye, I ended up with red footprints all over our brand new carpet, the only thing that worked to remove the stains was shaving foam! I thought the carpet was doomed, but shaving foam lifted the dye straight out. I had to repeat a couple of times over the next few days but thankfully we saved the carpet and not a trace in sight!!

Eliards2012 · 31/07/2020 04:39

Also, hairyspray removes dried nail polish from carpets, as I found out the following week. Wet the area with a damp cloth, then spray hairspray leave for a few minutes before brushing away with a toothbrush or similar. Works well Smile

Harriedharriet · 31/07/2020 04:41

@slinkysaluki

London tea tree oil is good for nits, the pure stuff mind
Dreadful things. A few ads in this house so have been there. Best thing? Wash hair, quick comb and flat iron it. Do that every night. The heat from the iron burns the eggs. Only thing that worked in this house and actually the easiest solution.
