What tip have you heard about and been incredulous when it actually works?

I saw on Twitter that filling a ziplock bag with water and a few coins and hanging it in a doorway/placing it on the doorstep will keep flies out. It seemed such a bizarre suggestion that I thought I would try it and can confirm it works. I've also hung one near the bins and there hasn't been any flies around for a week.
Are there any other tips that I should know?

Using a coin to clean water marks/limescale/a build up around the toilet bowl, my boss told me to try and i thought it was absolute bs but i was amazed with the results.

MonsteraCheeseplant · 31/07/2020 09:10

Well, a fly just buzzed right on past my ziplock bag of water and coins that's hanging on the patio door Hmm

Iwouldratherbemuckingout · 31/07/2020 09:25

@fodderbeet

Anyone else wondering how to effectively attach a small bag of water with coins in it to a horse?
Oh indeed, yes! But I don’t think we would be very bothered by flies as they would be unable to keep up as we bogged off at full speed to get away from the jingle jangle Grin

Always keep a booklet of first class stamps in your purse. This is a tip I learnt from an extremely organised ex, over twenty years ago. I have silently thanked him many times during the intervening years when I've had something to post urgently when I'm out.

Which is better The Pink Stuff or the Astonish in a rectangular tub that is solid but you moisten to a paste ?

justanotherneighinparadise · 31/07/2020 17:43

I’ve tried loads of things but I haven’t tried the product @drinkingwineoutofamug mentioned. ThNk you 👍

@drinkingwineoutofamug

Only just found out that in my washing machine detergent drawer, there is a little flap that you press to get the drawer out ! Game changer!!
Then, when you've got it out, put it in the dishwasher to get rid of every tiny bit of nasty black stuff.

Any tips to stop my wine glass filling up with fruit flies (other than necking the wine really fast).

Manolin · 31/07/2020 20:31

Get a flat shovel and whack it down on them fast and hard. The wine glass will be no more, but the vine flies will be well and truly fucked.

mineofuselessinformation · 31/07/2020 21:12

Ooh, I just remembered a good one!
Put your oven shelves in the dishwasher.
Once it's going and is hot, whip the shelves out one at a time and go over them with a wire scouter. If you have any burnt in bits (I usually do! Blush), it falls right off.
If you also use an oven liner in the bottom, you can do the same with that.
Hob Brite on the door and the jobs done!
(If the door is particularly dirty, use a razor blade scraper first).

mineofuselessinformation · 31/07/2020 21:13

Duh! Scourer....

NoMoreMrNiceGaius · 31/07/2020 21:41

To open jars, tap the handle of a butter knife along the raised edge in a circle. You can 100% open any jar like this, some just require firmer/more taps than others but most will come right off after a few light taps.

Another one I recently learnt and tried was cleaning the white sole of sneakers/Skechers etc with micellair water and it worked perfectly!

@nannymags thank you for your post. I was moving furniture yesterday and to my horror discovered lots of tiny fly like things and a hole in my carpet. Cheeky bastards!

I asked myself: "is there such a thing as moths that only go for carpets?"

Now I know the answer! Grin Do please let me know what works best. One lot was under an item of furniture that had only been in situ since Lockdown began. Grr and ewww!

Day or 2 old crusty loaves that have gone tough can be revived by a quick run under the tap then 5 mins in a hot oven - crisps up the crust and softens the middle

SybillaB · 03/08/2020 18:31

A tip from my friend in France for keeping french bread fresh for another day is to put the leftover stick in the freezer. Do not wrap, just as it is. Get it out on the day, let it defrost and the is crust is crispy and the bread soft.

Works for crusty rolls too. I buy a 4 pack, freeze 3 then get out 1 per day.

FrangipaniBlue · 04/08/2020 22:22

Sorry @Atthebottomofthegarden just seen this!!

Here you go Grin

tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz · 05/08/2020 16:06

I've got one ... if you have lots of similar looking keys for various padlocks (shed, garden box, etc) colour code the key and padlock with the same colour nail polish to tell at a glance which goes with which. Bonus is it's pretty weather proof too.

I've also done this with iPad charging cables and plugs, whilst I know they're interchangeable I find some of us in the house DD Confused---- are move heavy handed than others and I want mine to last.

and I've done it with nail brushes too as I've separate ones for scrubbing veg, scrubbing stains off clothes and scrubbing my hands/nails after fake tan.

I very rarely actually bother to paint my nails though Grin

My DH managed to get a black sharpie blob on my new white bedsheets 😩. Have tried most things. Any advice?

This is a good video re. permanent marker stains on white fabric. Not sure where you get bleaching powder from though 🤔

Just remembered this one. You should store soap for at least a year to dry. It lasts way longer. I don't think it's the glycerine based ones though.
