What tip have you heard about and been incredulous when it actually works?

I saw on Twitter that filling a ziplock bag with water and a few coins and hanging it in a doorway/placing it on the doorstep will keep flies out. It seemed such a bizarre suggestion that I thought I would try it and can confirm it works. I've also hung one near the bins and there hasn't been any flies around for a week.
Are there any other tips that I should know?

Most stains come out with Persil bio liquid I find .My old dog had cut his paw(unbeknown to me!) and was lying on a cream throw which turned a scary shade of pink! Whole lot out first go!

Pinching the bridge of your nose to stop yourself sneezing.

SkiingIsHeaven · 17/07/2020 17:22

If you have something in your eye, pull the bottom lid down as far as you can and do a massive sniff. Clears your eye instantly.

Scuffs on patent leather shoes can be removed with a tiny bit of nail varnish remover on a cotton bud.

If you have one of those flat faced dogs that sometimes has a coughing fit, cover its nostrils to make it swallow and the coughing stops immediately.

@Wilma55

Clean your iron by rubbing paracetamol on it
This absolutely works. The iron has to be hot. Works every time.

Burying a cat in the foundations of a new house brings you luck.

Any tips for getting balsamic vinegar stains out of clothing?

Tonytonymacaroni · 17/07/2020 18:07

Rinsing out period stained knickers or sheets in cold water (also helps to scrub a bit with an old toothbrush but no soap needed) before washing on a cool wash. It works. Blood is a protein type stain, so if you ‘cook’ it in hot water it will set, instead of wash out. I was told this by a midwife when I had my home visit with my first baby and I complained that I’d ruined my nice sheets by bleeding over the edge of my maternity pad one night. I watched the blood stain disappear within seconds! Helps if you do it within 8 hrs I think.

reesewithoutaspoon · 17/07/2020 18:10

cold salt water also helps with blood stains. make a salt paste or let it soak in the cold salty water before washing.

Don’t kill long leggy cellar spiders because they eat big hairy house spiders.

Didn’t believe it till I witnessed it with my own eyes. Game changer.

@KitKat1985

I have a 3 year old toddler who never wants to get dressed as she never wants to put on any of the clothes I choose for her, and instead wants to put on something else (usually inappropriate for the weather like shorts in January). Insistence of putting on my choice of clothing was leading to full on tantrums and leaving the house was becoming a nightmare. Advised to try the technique of picking out two suitable items (e.g, a choice of two jumpers in winter) and letting her pick her favourite to wear. It works! She happily picks one of the outfits to wear and it's far less stressful as she feels she is the one to have chosen her outfit, and I know she's wearing something suitable.
Also works for husbands with appalling dress sense

Thank you! I thought my OH was loosing the plot as he’s put coins in a water bag and left around the kitchen!! He must have read the same thing

Covert19 anyone's cat?!!

thenightsky · 17/07/2020 18:18

Using washing up liquid and fabric conditioner to wash your windows. I've never been able to clean windows without leaving them in a state until I tried this. Complete game changer!

What? Mixed together with water, or separately?

lifesalongsong · 17/07/2020 18:18

The fly one has been doing the rounds for years, from what I've read it works for some, makes no difference to others and I'm sure I've read some science about, something to-do with how flys' eyes work I think.

If you want tips join some of the cleaning groups on Facebook, there are always suggestions, in fact I'm pretty sure all the posters above must be in the Mrs Hinch groups, I've seen all those tips in there Grin

If you are doing sit ups/crunches and it hurts your neck, put your tongue on the roof of your mouth.

Surely that would be classified as cruelty to cats? Shock
ComeOnGordon · 17/07/2020 18:27

A friend taught me to defrost the freezer with a hairdryer. It’s a game changer. Put all the freezer food in the fridge, switch the freezer off then aim the hairdryer at the ice. Job done in 30 mins and the freezer stuff that was in the fridge hasn’t defrosted so can go straight back in

@lifestooshort123

Use a 2p piece to remove crusty lime scale from chrome taps. I was amazed!
^this

I couldn’t see how it would work so ignored it...then I got fed up tried it...... my taps now look like new!

Pieceofpurplesky · 17/07/2020 18:40

Teacher one. If anyone writes on your board with permanent marker write over it in board marker - makes it disappear

NooneElseIsSingingMySong · 17/07/2020 18:47

I did the same tip as Kitkat with my DD who has sensory issues and was always determined to chose her own clothes! Less drama through minimal choice.

I also tried the milk on my white tunics that got washed with a pen. Soaked overnight then washed in the washing machine with a dishwasher tablet. You honestly can’t see the stains now.

JaaniGoGo · 17/07/2020 18:48

@GoGoGadgetShoes

Pouring boiling water on berry juice stains to watch them disappear before your eyes.
Thank you for this. Dc spilled some berry juice, from his snack container, all over his bag. I’m going to try it now!

Red undies under a white dress?!! I've heard this but cannot believe it works. Please tell me the science behind it people Confused
I read it as red undies under white undies to make a beige effect, but may be wrong. Wouldn't want to wear two undies in the heat!
RememberTheSunnierDays · 17/07/2020 19:24

I tried this recently as wanted to reuse my Douwe Egbert a coffee jar and the glue was stuck fast. If you mix oil and sodium bicarbonate to make a paste, slather it on the sticky bits and leave for half an hour minimum. It wipes off rally easily! I used a scouring sponge but just for the abrasion, but I don’t think it was necessary really. :)

I don't even bother with the bicarb - a bit of WD40 on its own does the trick.
