@BubbleIsSTILLNotAFuckingVerb I definitely don't judge you!! Grin I'm very happy for everyone to do whatever works for them - everyone's situations are so vastly different. I feel very lucky that whether or not I choose to wear a mask it is genuinely my choice. I feel incredibly sorry for the women I see on various boards that are already dealing with a mountain of issues like PTSD and now they have nosey old bloke at the GP practice giving them hassle about them not wearing a mask.

And yes I totally agree with everything you say @torydeathdrug

Drivingdownthe101 · 13/07/2020 17:14

Can't MNers just go back to judging the fuck out of them and not each other so we are all happy? Except MILs obviously but they're always in the wrong anyway so meh

My MIL has pissed me off today. I would start a post about it but I think I’ll just get people screeching ‘people are dying and all you’re bothered about is your MIL!!!’

LivinLaVidaLoki · 13/07/2020 17:15

No @Drivingdownthe101 I am sure it will be...

"JUST BE THANKFUL YOUR MIL IS ALIVE!!"

Drivingdownthe101 · 13/07/2020 17:16

Although actually they might judge her because she’s overweight with a heart condition and wants to come over on a germ ridden metal tube in the sky in August Grin. So I might get some support. That’s not why she’s pissed me off, I should add. I do actually like her and will be pleased to see her Smile

Haha of course!

I've been feeling progressively more flat and down over the last week. I just started to feel like there was light at the end of the tunnel but the negatively feels relentless. All the reporting and discussion seems to be second wave, global cases rising, airborne spread, just doom doom doom.
I'm worried about my family in South Africa. I'm pissed off at the fact that ned bastards have been up and down rural Scotland covering the place in shit (often literally) and burning trees. People online are being even shittier to each other than usual. And I've had the heating on for most of this month. Every time I step foot outside everyone's faces are covered.

I have raging PMT as you can probably all tell but I've hit some sort of wall,.

SomewhereEast · 13/07/2020 17:19

Ooohhhh our local little indy cinema (which I love & really want to support) is reopening and showing The Empire Strikes Back this weekend 👀

Teateaandmoretea · 13/07/2020 17:23

This probably doesn’t help at all but we really are stuck with the negativity long term I think. All any of us can do is to try to rise above it and live from day to day.

The thing is the second wavers will be proved right in one way or another - there will be second waves but hopefully not a large one in the U.K.

TuckMyWin · 13/07/2020 17:26

I'm not against masks per se. I hate the thought of having to wear them because it's just one more outward sign that things are totally fucked, but I know that's not me reacting to the mask itself, but rather the whole situation. The thing about wearing masks, as I understand it, is that if, as they say, they reduce transmission rates, then making them mandatory is one measure that could be taken to reduce infection risk. I keep reading "I don't get why I can go out for a meal where I can't wear a mask, but I might have to wear one to the supermarket" - but it's not really a fair comparison because the two things aren't mutually exclusive - nobody is saying that opening restaurants doesn't bring with it more infection risk, but I think the point is (or should be) that it's a balance- in order for us to go back to doing something that increases the risk (going to the pub), the logic is that something else has to be done to reduce the risk, to balance it out. Hence mask wearing. But it isn't a magic bullet that will only work if everybody does it. Some people not wearing a mask because they can't/won't doesn't mean that it's not still a worthwhile thing to ask people to do, if it still reduces the risk at a population level because more people will wear one than would do if it wasn't mandated. The problem is with the way it's being touted as the new 'stay the fuck at home', with the implication that if you don't, you're the direct cause of people dying. Or that shops are only "safe" (as opposed to unsafe - that there's no in between, just the two states) if everybody wears one. All the stuff in the press about it becoming just something people do out of politeness is really unhelpful too - like if you don't wear one, you're somehow anti-social. People proposing 'no mask, no entry' is just wrong wrong wrong- that's not the point at all, and won't achieve anything except giving the self-righteous a reason to polish their halos.

I’m glad someone else is annoyed at the current misuse of staycation, I was starting to doubt myself and think I had the definition wrong all along. What actually defines a staycation under the new meaning though? I live eighty five miles from France, which makes it considerably closer to me than most of the UK, if I set out driving at breakfast time I can be in Paris for lunch, no way I could do that to Cornwall.

Orangeblossom78 · 13/07/2020 17:29

WTF Confused

Teateaandmoretea · 13/07/2020 17:31

I think that electric fence thing is hilarious 🤣. What a nutter.

A staycation is when you stay at home and go for days out. It is not a fucking UK holiday.

DrearyWallAntler · 13/07/2020 17:32

@orangeblossom78

I have been to that pub (albeit a few years ago now)

The landlord was a 'character' twat

Orangeblossom78 · 13/07/2020 17:32

My swimming pool emailed to say we can book one hour sessions soon. Need to turn up pool ready and access to changing rooms and showers is 'limited' well what does that mean we can use them or not?

Don't fancy wandering around the town centre in a wet cossie really with wet hair.

Orangeblossom78 · 13/07/2020 17:33

Good way to get rid of your customers I guess (pub)

Orangeblossom78 · 13/07/2020 17:37

I find this interesting, as London now has very low (no?) cases too...

In contrast, New York City - previously the epicentre of the country’s epidemic - reported no new Covid-19 deaths over 24 hours for the first time since March

(from the BBC)

LadyOfTheImprovisedBath · 13/07/2020 17:38

Orangeblossom78 I'd suggest e-mail and asking what they mean by limited.

I suspect it means every other shower is off so there's social distancing and possibly same with changing rooms every other one to in use.

Might not matter as much if they have limits of numbers in pool anyway.

Orangeblossom78 · 13/07/2020 17:46

Yeah I will email them. It said 10 or 20 in a (widened) lane so I guess as quite a large pool could be quite a few at once. It just opened new unisex changing rooms and think would have plenty of space

Can see ones jumping out the way round corners though

wanderings · 13/07/2020 17:47

I'm sure that electric fence thing is a cunning publicity stunt: some people will want to travel to the pub just to see it, take selfies, or even experience it, if they are electricity fetishists. (And yes, such people do exist, and they play with expensive toys known as violet wands!) That pub owner is probably thinking along the same lines as the one who publicly said that he would not make his staff wear masks: by getting in the news, he's put his pub on the map.

With the mask thing in shops, this article makes a good point: would the shop staff have to enforce it? Even if said enforcer is the suited security man lurking just behind the door in supermarkets, would he be the one enforcing it, and presumably he would also be masked? I can just imagine the dialogue:
Security: Your face not masked, you're not coming in.
Customer: I can't hear you, you've got a muzzle on.

BubbleIsSTILLNotAFuckingVerb · 13/07/2020 17:50

The problem is with the way it's being touted as the new 'stay the fuck at home', with the implication that if you don't, you're the direct cause of people dying.

YY @TuckMyWin! I have decided that the "new normal" Wink phrase to replace "sad deaths" is "unnecessary" or maybe "unavoidable" deaths - directly caused by non mask wearers. All their fault. Selfish irresponsible bastards. God how the government love to find a target to direct scrutiny away from them and their and their total fuck ups - and how quickly people fall in line with this.

I also feel the need to say that my brother's auntie's grandpa's vet's friend who has asthma, and is a doctor, plus has no mouth or ears or nose manages just fine to wear a mask, so I'm sure you can all manage it. Little children manage it in Singapore.

Just checking you all know that. Wink

FrugiFan · 13/07/2020 17:51

11 deaths today!? Unsurprisingly there isnt an article on the BBC saying how low this is, just stuff about masks and whether immunity lasts. Dementor central!

LivinLaVidaLoki · 13/07/2020 17:54

So I'm in a queue for tui to change my holiday. Been in for over 2 hours but the office is now closed. Do they stay to clear all the calls in the queue or will I be here all night?

Willow2017 · 13/07/2020 17:55

@LivinLaVidaLoki

No *@Drivingdownthe101* I am sure it will be...

"JUST BE THANKFUL YOUR MIL IS ALIVE!!"

Don't forget.. Are you sure its not you that's BU every time?
LadyOfTheImprovisedBath · 13/07/2020 17:58

Been in for over 2 hours but the office is now closed. Do they stay to clear all the calls in the queue or will I be here all night?

Depends on their systems but I've been in hour long phone queues with government agencies and companies and found you wait and wait and then it just clicks off and you have to re-ring and re-join the queue.

So fingers crossed they don't do that to you.

LivinLaVidaLoki · 13/07/2020 17:59

It's ridiculous that they are only open office hours. Like no one has a fkn job??!!
