That graph assumes that masks are magic.

😂😂😂😂

Drivingdownthe101 · 13/07/2020 13:24

Well yeah and that.
The annoying thing is, masks will be mandated in public places, infection rates will continue to fall as they have been for months, and there will be cries of ‘see, masks have saved us’.

Teateaandmoretea · 13/07/2020 13:25

That needs to feature in the next thread title

ADs try to acquire some magic masks

Mascotte · 13/07/2020 13:26

DS called me "Nicola's bitch!" when I was grumbling about putting the frigging face covering on to go for a pee in Asda 😂😂

Had to be done so I could get us our KFC : treat after hideous uniform shopping trip!

Mascotte · 13/07/2020 13:28

I've noticed the masks are magic in fact, as SD has been abandoned in shops now.

My wee town was looking dead today though, I think the masks and fannyjng with queues and arrows and notices will just mean people stay at home.

wanderings · 13/07/2020 13:32

Here's a cracking mask thread: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/3966499-face-mask-face-off The masks really are causing problems there. Behold the frothing!

Shodan · 13/07/2020 13:35

@Teateaandmoretea Thank you, she's being tried on yet another new blood pressure medication so has another night in hospital, but I think she's ok otherwise.

Re: masks- I gave in and ordered some off Amazon. I was going to make some, but then found some for 2.47 for 30 (ish, I can't remember exactly). I figure that the cheaper they are, the flimsier they are, ergo the less stifling they'll be.

Win win- being able to breathe AND a private bird-flip at dementors.

countrygirl99 · 13/07/2020 13:36

I have a couple of cotton masks bought just in case. This morning it occurred to me they may come in useful in winter when I'm mucking about at 5.30am. I'm hoping they will stop my nose streaming in frosty weather. Or they may just get soggy and disgusting from my dripping nose.
There is nothing I need to go to a shop for other than groceries and faffing with a mask would definitely put me off going anywhere unless it was vital.

Letsgomaths · 13/07/2020 13:37

More scarecrows.

We've got some homemade masks but I have just ordered one off amazon with a valve and seperate removable carbon filter for me.

It won't be here till August as it's coming from China but it has good reviews as confortable and more breathable - so we'll see.

Wales so far isn't on mask bandwaggon but we do seem to follow everyone else eventually and come autumn I'll most likely be back on public transport.

IAintentDead · 13/07/2020 13:44

@FrugiFan

Sorry if this has already been discussed but I have seen this graph on a number of other threads as evidence of a second wave - it's from the worldometer website. Any thoughts on it?
It's not come from Neil Ferguson and ICL has it? Looks like one of theirs
IAintentDead · 13/07/2020 13:46

I love going through villages with scarecrow displays.

People put such great imagination and skill into them.

MxEWeatherwax · 13/07/2020 13:49

Can I join? If I have to wear mask, then I will be going shopping less not more. It was bad enough having to wear my mask on a 10 minutes park and ride bus. The R rate where I live is very low unless you are in care setting.

NannyPhlegm · 13/07/2020 13:50

@LadyOfTheImprovisedBath Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but masks will be compulsory on public transport in Wales from 27 July

110APiccadilly · 13/07/2020 13:58

A question: if face coverings are magic (or even helpful!) do countries/areas where a high proportion of people convert their face for religious reasons have lower infection rates than we'd expect, given population density, etc?

If I were a researcher, I'd be interested in this as you might be able to get some real data (though I admit it would be hard to disentangle face covering from other variables).

110APiccadilly · 13/07/2020 13:59

Cover their face, obviously. Converting your face is not part of any religion I've come across, unless you count Ash Wednesday.

justasking111 · 13/07/2020 13:59

OK Dripford has spoken 27 July masks on public transport mandatory. Well I reckon the nudge theory is being used now, To prepare us for winter.

I give up I will wear the bloody mask, wherever asked but only because I want the NHS to be available to people who need it for cancer and other reasons. I do not expect it to be closed down again to save it leaving hospitals empty in anticipation of this lurgy thus killing off people who have something else.

I do not want schools closed down again affecting our wonderful children, ditto universities and work places.

I am doing it for all of the above.

LadyOfTheImprovisedBath · 13/07/2020 14:00

@NannyPhlegm thanks I'd missed that.

I would probably have worn them on local buses and trains anyway but still - I think I'll be doing some more mask shopping see what the least worst options are.

justasking111 · 13/07/2020 14:05

Dripford also said where two metres cannot be achieved less is possible but waffle, waffle, waffle, dependent on other considerations..

LadyOfTheImprovisedBath · 13/07/2020 14:10

Well I've now bought a neck gaiter with removable carbon filter and ear holdings - so will see how I get on with them both.

PinkFondantFancy · 13/07/2020 14:31

Wow I've actually become quite afraid of what our world has become if the attitudes on some threads outside of this one are actually how people in the real world are. Hopefully it's a weird MN thing. Someone with a perfectly good reason to not wear a mask was told that they won't get any hassle if they have the proper proof they don't need it, or that they should stay at home, or that they should just suck it up and how much worse would they feel if someone SADLY DIED because of their lack of mask wearing. The rapid descent into totalitarianism is absolutely terrifying. I find that way more scary than the virus. Show me your papers!!

Pleasedontdothat · 13/07/2020 14:31

@IAintentDead and @FrugiFan - I think it’s come from a study by the Institute for Health Metrics & Evaluation, based in Seattle. I heard one of their researchers on R4 the other day - really dementory about masks ..

justasking111 · 13/07/2020 14:33

Covid deaths England 11, NI 1, Scotland 0 Wales 0. England will update later with figures outside hospital settings.

Pleasedontdothat · 13/07/2020 14:33

Having just seen a cringe-worthy FB post by Sadiq Khan where he patronisingly explained very slowly in case his audience were thick that ‘my mask protects you, your mask protects me’ .... I’ve now decided I definitely won’t be voting for him again ...

Oh and I love the bit where if you wait longer than 30 seconds when you have a red light you should get 20% of shop for each other 30 seconds. Have been there and if a till is playing up and not recognising an item it takes longer than 30 seconds to sort it out! And there is a plastic barrier between us and customers which was apparently fine until last week! What are you gonna catch through plastic? 😤 The amount of people who lean around the plastic cos they cant hear me through visor +plastic barrier is unreal and I can't hear them with thier mask on! First possible time available i am getting a hearing test....
