When and where were your clubbing days?

London based for me. Started off in places like SW1, Club UK, MOS, The Satellite Club, Cafe de Paris. Then progressed on to The End, Turnmills and Fabric via Bagleys and The Cross.

I have so much nostalgia for those carefree irresponsible days pre children. I have continued going to gigs and festivals but haven’t set foot in a club for a long long time. I think it would be a totally different vibe nowadays with everyone totally preoccupied with their phones.

What were your favourite venues/club nights?

B1rdbra1n, I went to the Timepiece in 1982!

Loved Rock World, and also Allnamesaregone Club de Mar, thats a blast from the past for me.

Newcastle, Tuxedo Princess, long before it was the Boat, Madisons, Tuxedo Junction (never used the phones though), Julies, but the best nights were always at The Mayfair.

Maybe get the bus to Sunderland for a night at Gens, or South Shields and go to Ruperts (then Roxanns), dear god that place was grim, or the Chelsea Cat, Buddys for the cheap drinks, Banwells But the Best was The Ranch

LetsHearItForTheBuoy · 27/06/2020 09:42

I lived in Sheffield in my 'rave' days so
Capitol
Gatecrasher
Occasions
Insomniacz
Music Factory
Adelphi
With the occasional trip up the M1 the Orbit in Leeds which was mental!

And for the more sedate nights
Roxy's
Josephines
Europa
Club Wow

Good times they were !

@hamstersarse

Wow such great memories on this thread. Clubbing really was amazing. I was between Cheshire, manchester and Leeds and went to all the famous dance ones - Hacienda, Sankeys, the venue, back to basics etc. But was also partial to a cheesy one and Cheshire always delivered on that!

There was ‘clubbing’ and clubbing

2 totally different vibes but just so amazing.

I’ve an 18 yo ds....he’s never been to a club. I find that really sad. Yoofs are so confined compared to what I was able to do. I wouldn’t stop him if he wanted to go to an all night club....they just don’t do it. I blame coke. It changed the vibe. People were on ectasy when I was clubbing and it was just euphoric....amazing...can feel it in my bones now just thinking about it

It’s a shame that young people don’t go clubbing anymore. They’re really missing out. Perhaps it’s to do with festivals pretty much taking over. And I think social media has a lot to answer for. Everyone is too hung up on posing and looking good to actually have a good tune. They don’t get lost in the music anymore!

This Chase & Status video for Blind Faith does a really good job of capturing the vibe of dancing your socks off all night off your head on ecstasy. Very authentic! 😂🥴

Late 80s & early to mid 90s - Konspiracy, Thunderdome, Home, Hippos, Bowlers. Discotheque Royal, Piccadilly 21, Sankeys Soap, Holy City Zoo

LBOCS2 · 27/06/2020 10:11

Why are all of the SW Londoners on here pretending they never went to Caesars in a Streatham or Blue Orchid in Croydon? See also; Infernos Clapham. And The Grand. Come out, come out, wherever you are!!

Yeah, DH spent a lot of time in Caesars (and Cinatras) in his underage youth. And I've definitely been to Infernos in more than one occasion... managed to give the Grand a swerve somehow though!

bluetrees · 27/06/2020 10:16

My first rave was Verbeer Manor with a friend from Exmouth. But I lived in Plymouth so the night started at the Conservatory, Warehouse for the main event then the all nighter at the Sound Factory.

My sister was at uni in Sheffield so I also did trips up there and did the Arches, Leadmill, Niche.

bluetrees · 27/06/2020 10:17

Oh and Zeros to finish off at the Sunday all dayer

Rollergirl11 · 27/06/2020 10:18

I lived all around Clapham, Battersea and Balham for about 10 years. Never went to Inferno’s or The Grand but we did go to Wessex House at Clapham Junction a lot! We never saw that as a proper clubbing night though, was just if we were staying local and wanted to go on somewhere else. We went a lot less when The White House on Clapham High St opened up as that was far better music wise and classy as opposed to a total dive!

Leeds 90's
Vague - a particularly memorable night with two up and coming young actors who have gone on to have short lived soap careers. They bought me two e's. I declined. They swapped them for a bag of speed.
Town and country club - staggering distance home
Back to basics and circus circus - particular favourites
Mister Craig's and Ritzy - low on to cool points but cheap and good student discounts
Made a trip to catterick once to the squaddies nightclub affectionately known as Scabs 😳
I used to frequent one in Chapeltown whose name escapes me now but got into a few near miss scrapes.
I spent a lot of time in pubs and clubs in those lovely hedonistic days.
I'd love to go to a 90's indie club night now but only if it was full of people my age rather than young 'uns who would think it was gloriously ironic!

Oldraver · 27/06/2020 10:56

Where to start...well someone mentioned The Pink Coconut (Derby) and yes spent my late teens there and the god damn Gossips (of Agadoo fame) thought they were 'townie' clubs

My proper clubbing started early 00's (though prefer naughties) and my first outings were at Gatecrasher Summer Sound, Global Gatehring and NEC Gatecrasher

I then got involved in the London scene, The Fridge, Club 414, Fire, Camden Palace,SE1, Turnmills, Brixton Academy, many more Ive forgotten name of. A few outings to Ibiza for Space opening. The Sanctuary for Hardcore Heaven/Slamming vinyl...and cant resist a little boogie in Ikea

Then I discovered Birmingham, Sundissential, Godskitchen, Subway, Shaft, Shine and many more. WE also used to got to various Sundissential nights around the country. Also Leeds, Manchester, Sheffield

It wouldn't be unusual to go to The Fridge on a FRiday night, followed by the 414 till it finished after miday, quick dash home to Oxford to freshen up, then onto Birmigham where you could club from Saturday night right through to Monday morning. I actually gave up work May 2004 to concentrate on clubbing for a while

I once managed nearly 600 miles in a weekend, popped down to Glastonbury to pick up a DJ, up to Birmingham, over to Long Eaton back to Birmingham (severel clubs there) then back again

I usually manage one club night or last year day clubbing a year, cant

Franticbutterfly · 27/06/2020 11:11

@oldraver I met my husband at the 414. I also used to go to the Pink Coconut as a teen. Wink

[/quote] I sometimes wonder in my wilder thoughts if we could do with a national programme of prescribed ecstasy! I know there are trials at the moment for it being used to help people with depression and trauma - on the basis it reignites the serotonin and the neurons, and just jars you right back to the memory of euphoria! I believe the trials are very positive!

You can see it in this video....people totally euphoric and 'in the zone'. A lot of people nowadays could benefit from a bit of 'rapid onset' euphoria!!

CrowdedHouseinQuarantine · 27/06/2020 11:32

pink coconut in brighton, 1985
then camden palace

CrowdedHouseinQuarantine · 27/06/2020 11:36

and another club in Tottenham Court Road, google might help me

Rollergirl11 · 27/06/2020 11:38

@hamstersarse one of my friends was the costume designer for that video and had to source lots of 90’s clothing for authenticity. She said that they actually gave everyone pills so those euphoric expressions are totally genuine! 😃

I remember they always used to go on about MDMA being dangerous because of it depleting your serotonin stores. The truth is they just didn’t know enough about it. Medication for ADHD (which is a direct result of dopamine deficiency) is stimulant based and helps the brain to create the depleted dopamine. So it stands to reason that MDMA could help with mood disorders.

oh and the Empire Leicester Square, huge place

IAmTheBFG · 27/06/2020 11:52

@LilBlackLab

oh, and paradise lost in Watford

Batchford Hall out near St Albans too

My daughter (18) goes to Paradise Lost for the odd night out! It's now called Pryzm though.
CrowdedHouseinQuarantine · 27/06/2020 11:58

clubbing was quite rare before i left home at 19, but we did manage a lift to a club once, perhaps Top Rank in Brighton? however boyfriend had the wrong shirt, and the next time, had trainers, so we were not allowed entry

Bbq1 · 27/06/2020 12:02

My clubbing years were between thr ages of 17 and maybe 27. I'm 47 now and can't imagine anything worse these days! Loved it back then. I'm from Liverpool so we used to frequent The Cavern in Mathew Street. My favourite was a floating nightclub. It was a ship called The Manxman that was moored in one of The Mersey docks. Loved it there. Unfortunately it was closed when somebody tragically fell from it and died. Also, went to The Quadrant Park but that was more house and rave, not so much my scene. Also been to a couple of rock clubs in my time with dh. In holiday on Greece many years ago, we got friendly with a British couple running a bar there. One night, they took us out and because the guy knew everyone he'd just nod at the door staff and we just bypassed everything and walked in all the clubs!

CrepuscularCritter · 27/06/2020 12:05

Ah B1rdbra1n I came to say the Timepiece in Exeter too. Where the ceilings would rain on you each night. I wore holes in my boots dancing there. And Boxes on the Quay, although I much preferred the Timepiece.

CherryPavlova · 27/06/2020 12:17

Timepiece in Exeter is going strong and retrieving numerous mobile phones from lavatories

Martysmarvellousmeals · 27/06/2020 12:21

I have just been and dug out some photos from the Timepiece...
