A 43-year-old German prisoner who travelled around Portugal in a camper van is now the focus of Scotland Yard's investigation into the disappearance of Madeleine McCann.

@cadent @noeuf we could quibble about Gerry McCann's various statements indefinitely, but as others have said, there's nothing to be gained from it now.

esmereldaP · 05/06/2020 18:48

A conversation about this case is always going to include rehashing how she was taken. For the most part I don't anyone does it to blame the parents. They made a risk decision and got it very wrong. No one knows it more than them. Hopefully this sack of evil is able to tell them where the body is and they finally get to bury their baby. And there really should be a trigger warning on that guardian article. It's like a horror movie come true. It's everyone's worst nightmare. And he's young....it's all just too fucking terrifying.

IHateCoronavirus · 05/06/2020 18:55

Oh goodness those poor girls. It sounds too similar to be coincidental Sad
The conversation he had online turns my stomach. How can another human being listen to him say something like that and do nothing? Angry

GiantKitten · 05/06/2020 18:58
@GiantKitten Oh god, that Guardian article. I shouldn't have read it. Is there any way you can retrospectively put a warning on the link? Can you report it to MNHQ?

I didn''t think I was a particularly delicate snowflake but maybe I am.
Sorry, Smegs

Have reported & asked if they can add a warning

So you’re not going to apologise about your erroneous statement about GMc?

Mnthrowaway20202 · 05/06/2020 19:00

The suspect is an abhorrent piece of shit who is more than capable of committing all crimes against Madeline, but I’m sort of uncomfortable with the wide level of media coverage considering he hasn’t been convicted yet.

As in - will this jeopardise his right a fair trial and possibly lead to him getting off? Surely there may be jury bias as this is breaking news nationwide.

Cadent · 05/06/2020 19:01

@MNnicknameforCVthreads his identity hasn’t been revealed yet I think? Although I imagine it can be easily leaked on Twitter etc.

LavenderRoseSugarBall · 05/06/2020 19:01

I share your concerns Mnthrowaway20202

He looks like a psychopath on the pictures, right? Those eyes. Shudder.

knittingaddict · 05/06/2020 19:03

The suspects identity? It has been released.

covetingthepreciousthings · 05/06/2020 19:04

I’m sort of uncomfortable with the wide level of media coverage considering he hasn’t been convicted yet.

It can have positives though as more witnesses may come forward claiming to have seen him over the years behaving inappropriately etc, and it might lead them to get the knowledge to finally charge him with this.

Cadent · 05/06/2020 19:04

@knittingaddict ah thanks, I haven’t seen that.

toinfinityandlockdown · 05/06/2020 19:09

I hope to God this is the one. I think it’s unlikely she is still alive (although that would be amazing of course). But I hope the family can find peace. I feel so desperately sad for them.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 05/06/2020 19:11

I think as with all sex crimes, there’s a possibility he will have committed other unreported assaults and victims will recognise him and feel able to come forward, which might not help convict him for this particular murder but could help get him put away for a long time.

GiantKitten · 05/06/2020 19:12

@Cadent
He was Christian B yesterday.
It’s full name now.
Justified by the need for need for corroboration?

Madeleine McCann - new suspect
caperberries · 05/06/2020 19:14

@cadent I haven't made any erroneous statements about Gerry McCann, he repeatedly insisted that their decision to leave the 3 children in the apartment was perfectly normal and reasonable. His stance was widely discussed at the time and there are numerous examples of this on the public record, but I can't see any point in dragging this out further here.

caperberries · 05/06/2020 19:15

It can have positives though as more witnesses may come forward claiming to have seen him over the years behaving inappropriately etc, and it might lead them to get the knowledge to finally charge him with this.

The police must need something tangible to link him to Madeleine, so are hoping this level of publicity will deliver the vital evidence.

ScrambledSmegs · 05/06/2020 19:16

Thank you GiantKitten.

SouthWestmom · 05/06/2020 19:16

@caperberries
I'm seeing less 'quibbling' and more 'proving wrong' but if you want to gracefully retract your earlier comment that's lovely

Cadent · 05/06/2020 19:16

@GiantKitten thanks. Not sure what you mean by corroboration? Do you mean with police in Portugal etc?

NameChange84 · 05/06/2020 19:17

@TheCountessofFitzdotterel

When the video was found of him raping the pensioner there was also a video of him raping another young woman found at the scene, apparently at his home in Portugal. I don’t think he’s been charged with that one, presumably the victim didn’t come forward.

Maybe that’s why the police were so eager to convey that he was in prison, so that any victims would know that he couldn’t harm any further.

His first offence was for sexually assaulting and exposing himself to a six year old in a play park when he was a youth. Child pornography was found on USB sticks amidst animal bones (those who harm animals are often those most likely to become murderers) when his home was raided over the little German girl who went missing.

I honestly think any paedophile should be locked away for life. Why should they be allowed to roam the streets?

caperberries · 05/06/2020 19:18

@noeuf

"The couple have repeatedly insisted they believed Madeleine, then three, and their two-year-old twins Sean and Amelie were safe in the apartment in Praia da Luz. They were eating only 50 yards away, which enabled them to check on the children regularly."
@GiantKitten thanks. Not sure what you mean by corroboration? Do you mean with police in Portugal etc?
No, I mean they’re hoping for more evidence from people who’ve had contact with him in the past.

Unless he actually confesses their evidence is basically hearsay so I’m guessing they’re trying to build a better case.

Cadent · 05/06/2020 19:24

@caperberries

You said if only he’d said ‘we made a terrible mistake’.

He said in The Daily Mail in 2008: 'We made a mistake, but we are paying more for it than anyone could ever possibly imagine.'

What more do you want?! Why not admit you made a mistake?

Cadent · 05/06/2020 19:26

@GiantKitten ah understood thanks. That makes sense. Looking at the timeline of his crimes, it’s scary how often he was released only to rape women / abuse children again.

SouthWestmom · 05/06/2020 19:28

Caperberries:

Believed - past tense
Bitterly regret - present tense

They thought it was safe AT THE TIME and then regretted it forever after.

Honestly give up. They wish they hadn't left her. They can't change that. Their kid is making probably dead. A suspect has been identified.

Which of those sentences is really important to you? (Rhetorical)
