A 43-year-old German prisoner who travelled around Portugal in a camper van is now the focus of Scotland Yard's investigation into the disappearance of Madeleine McCann.

I really hope if this is the actual criminal responsible for her abduction they get it right and convict him. Whatever happened to her can't be changed so the only positive now is to give her parents some relief in their searching.

caperberries · 05/06/2020 19:33

@Cadent 2008 was year later. After the McCann's had refused to answer police questions and fled to the UK.

In the aftermath of the disappearance, while the McCanns were still in Portugal, they only ever sought to justify the decision to leave the children alone. They never described it as a mistake when she first went missing. Which is what my post was about.

I was discussing why it was that the McCanns attracted so much suspicion. It was because of the cognitive dissonance of pretending that leaving the children alone was normal and safe, which they reiterated again and again in the months after she disappeared.
Gerry McCann's aim at that time appeared to be to protect his reputation and avoid neglect claims by insisting it had been perfectly acceptable. Hence the quote above:

"The couple have repeatedly insisted they believed Madeleine, then three, and their two-year-old twins Sean and Amelie were safe in the apartment in Praia da Luz. They were eating only 50 yards away, which enabled them to check on the children regularly."

jaYne15 · 05/06/2020 19:34

It is relevant even though it is 13 years later. I am so sorry for what may have happened to Madeleine but I believe that it is a crime that may have been prevented. It is unbelievable that those three children at their age would be left alone in that situation. Also I believe that if they had been younger and out at a bar or club they would have had repercussions. Their socio-economic status protected them. Yes they have suffered for their mistake but not more than poor Maddie has. I can almost cry thinking about that poor child and I hope they find our what happened.

caperberries · 05/06/2020 19:34

@nouef I was happy to drop the point, you and @cadent appeared determined to continue quibbling about it.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 05/06/2020 19:35
@GiantKitten ah understood thanks. That makes sense. Looking at the timeline of his crimes, it’s scary how often he was released only to rape women / abuse children again.
THIS.

Not just scary, but really inexcusable.

Cadent · 05/06/2020 19:38

@caperberries

2008 was year later.

Oh so now they didn’t apologise fast enough for you! So what? They were in the middle of a tragedy in 2007?!

After the McCann's had refused to answer police questions and fled to the UK.

And I’ve already addressed a thread to you about them being arguidos and therefore could potentially have been detained in Portugal indefinitely.

They had two kids to think of and had to return to make a living. Why do you say they ‘fled’ like they were fleeing a crime?

SouthWestmom · 05/06/2020 19:40

The Guardian article I quoted was May 2007Confused

Honestly...I do wonder what the police are on...

It’s been widely reported today in the newspapers that the name of the other caller that the police are investigating is a man called Diogo Silva (as has already been discussed on this thread).

HOWEVER.

This persons name was already discovered on social media by doing a simple search by hundreds of people. It threw up a snapchat account AND more importantly, a LinkedIn account associated to a Diogo Silva who worked at the Luz bar in Praia De Luz.

How could the public discover this so easily but the police put out an appeal to find out the identity of the owner of the phone number?!

SouthWestmom · 05/06/2020 19:42

NameChange that seems slightly nuts! Are they all still current though, or possibly recycled?

caperberries · 05/06/2020 19:43

@namechange84 that it very strange indeed!

NameChange84 · 05/06/2020 19:46

There is speculation it could be a reused number but the name is now being put out there in the media,

Take a look at these two tweets;

NameChange84 · 05/06/2020 19:47

Sorry, look at the tweet by “Ben” replying to that tweet.

YesIDoLoveCrisps · 05/06/2020 19:49

I don’t have twitter what does it say please?

covetingthepreciousthings · 05/06/2020 19:51

I found this bizarre when I saw.. but it did make me wonder if this was part of the purpose of releasing the numbers..

I've never seen telephone numbers released like that to the media, it makes me wonder if they knew exactly whose number it was but hoped that the name being in the public from that discovery jog people's memory more.

I don't know much about press embargo's on names, but maybe this is the best way they thought they could get people to come forward about this persons potential involvement?

Hope some of that makes sense, as it did in my head... of course it could just be that they didn't actually thoroughly check the numbers themselves Confused

NameChange84 · 05/06/2020 19:55

Hope you can see this

Madeleine McCann - new suspect
ButteryPuffin · 05/06/2020 19:56

I'd also heard in one report though that that name's very common in Portugal. So it would be like looking up phone numbers registered to a John Smith, if that's accurate.

ButteryPuffin · 05/06/2020 19:57

Crisps you can click on Twitter links and read the page without having to be logged in.

YesIDoLoveCrisps · 05/06/2020 19:59

Ok thanks.

NameChange84 · 05/06/2020 20:06

The Luz Beach Cafe is a 5 minute walk from The Ocean Club (where the McCann Family were staying).

There are witness reports of the blonde man who acted strangely around the McCann’s apartment disappearing with a friend to another neighbouring cafe, the Habenera, with a friend.

If you look at it all on a map it’s quite chilling.

knittingaddict · 05/06/2020 20:14

I thought the other person on the end of the phone wasn't in the area at the time.

NameChange84 · 05/06/2020 20:20

@knittingaddict it’s thought the other person wasn’t in the PDL area at the time of the phonecall. That doesn’t mean it wasn’t someone who worked or lived there. It just means they might not have been in the direct vicinity of Praia De Luz between approx 7.30 and 8pm that evening.

IHateCoronavirus · 05/06/2020 20:22

Do they think Diogo Silver called him to alert him to the parents being out of the apartment?

knittingaddict · 05/06/2020 20:22

ok. I don't know the area at all. No idea what it's like.

NameChange84 · 05/06/2020 20:26

Ok, I’ve finally managed to view the LinkedIn Profile. There’s a breathtakingly strong resemblance of the man photographed to one of the efits.

NameChange84 · 05/06/2020 20:27

@IHateCoronavirus the police are saying at this stage the other caller is a witness not a suspect.
