Can any SATC fans eplain this to me- Carrie and Mr Big?

I've always meant to watch this but never got round to it. I've just finished season 1 and I did like it not quite getting the cult adoration yet though.

But.

Mr Big. What am I missing? Does she know his name? Is it actually Mr Big? When did he give her any clue that he wanted something serious? It seemed perfectly clear that he wanted something casual and there she was stalking him at church with his mother and demanding that he tells her he loves her!

She knows his name but he's referred to as Mr Big because he's such a bigshot. Spoiler alert you find out his name later on.

And she stalks him because she is a bit crazy and deluded I think!

iklboo · 28/04/2020 18:54

It's a toxic relationship. If she posted on here it would be 50% LTB and 50% 'wow, you sound like hard work'.

JMAngel1 · 28/04/2020 18:55

Oh just wait, you've only just wet your toes.
I'm so jealous you get to watch this for the first time.

It was very 'of its time'. I loved it first time around, but watching it recently it was obvious that he didn't want anything serious and Carrie was a stalker.

clumsyduck · 28/04/2020 18:57

This has made me want to rewatch the whole lot again ! I mean I have the time ! 🤔
Is it on any streaming apps ?

Whitney168 · 28/04/2020 18:58

Oh God, you've got a looooooong way to go ...

They tell us his name right at the end LOL.

Meredithgrey1 · 28/04/2020 18:58

We find out his name at the end of the last episode when it flashes up on her phone.

Turning up at the church and demanding to meet his mother was weird and clingy

Whitney168 · 28/04/2020 18:59

If she posted on here it would be 50% LTB and 50% 'wow, you sound like hard work'.

I think I might tend towards 25% LTB and 75% hard work these days, to be honest. Always liked the show, but looking back now I'd have (even less) time for Carrie's self-absorption.

slipperywhensparticus · 28/04/2020 18:59

Yeah I lost my rag with carrie a few times because she was such a nut

PaquitaVariation · 28/04/2020 19:01

Part of the Mr Big name is because what she ‘narrates’ in each episode is what she writes in her column. She uses it rather than his real name.

Oh now this makes sense, thanks!

YY to being of its time. Even SJP casually lighting up a fag in bed made me double take. And the 90s fashion, so bad, so good.

Some of it made me laugh out loud and I did love the group dynamic, like in the restaurant with the pepper mill.

Not for free, annoyingly. It wasn't expensive on Prime video though.

I love SATC but I don't think it's aged well at all!

RyanBergarasTeeth · 28/04/2020 19:10

I love satc but hated it when i first saw it. Me and my work mate constantly quote it or reference it.

Yes you find out his real name. But as pp said when she is narrating she is basically reading out her column. I dont think their relationship is even that weird of its time.

Miranda is probably the best character in it.

RyanBergarasTeeth · 28/04/2020 19:10

Its aged very badly. I watxhed it on now tv box if anyone has that. The 2 movies are on netflix as well.

Atalune · 28/04/2020 19:12

I love that show. It’s horribly dated and stupid and full of now terrible advice but it is SO Of it’s time!

TheSheepofWallSt · 28/04/2020 19:12

Oh god I mean... I love SATC. Love it. But Carrie is fucking HARD WORK.
Just wait. She gets worse.

when I watched it the first time (I was about 16?) I just wanted to be Carrie Bradshaw. I even looked a bit like her when I was younger (sadly as I’ve fatted out this is no longer the case, and I look like my 1980s dad rock-type Uncle Andrew instead...)

Anyway... As an adult I have eternal admiration and empathy for Miranda, for who I gave 0 fucks for, first time round.

Massive crush on Big though. That’s endured. The bastard.

RyanBergarasTeeth · 28/04/2020 19:13

Big is deffo sexy. And being super rich helps

Hoohaahoo · 28/04/2020 19:14

Don’t watch it thinking Carrie is a character you will like, or will understand why she makes certain choices. She’s not a very likeable character at all!

Still loved the show though. It’s not aged brilliantly but I love how open and funny it was about sex and relationships.

Cakemonger · 28/04/2020 19:17

Loved it at the time but agree it hasn't aged well. Still worth watching for the writing and for Miranda and Samantha who are hilarious.

Big is kind of a non-entity.

6FeetBack · 28/04/2020 19:18

Miranda seems the most realistic to me. I don't quite get how she fits in with the group.

Oh Big is gorgeous. The shoulders

OP posts:
iklboo · 28/04/2020 19:23

@Whitney168 - that's true actually. I didn't really like any of them. Samantha was just a parody.

Disfordarkchocolate · 28/04/2020 19:27

He was always an arse.

She was always hard work.

Two horrible people being horrible to each other. Not my favourite show to be honest. I need to like the main character.

WinterBerry7 · 28/04/2020 19:33

I love SATC but every time I watch it I realise more and more what an absolute obsessive whiney demanding nightmare Carrie was.

Might watch it again though!

ChainsawBear · 28/04/2020 19:35

It's aged very badly, and with the eyes of adulthood Carrie in particular is a bit of a nightmare. But it was a groundbreaking show in its time.

Now other shows are capable of covering the same ground much better, so I doubt I'd rewatch. Miranda was always my favourite though, and is the only one whose storyline really has any weight in hindsight. What she dealt with pretty much makes all Carrie's man-related bullshit look stupid.
