Can any SATC fans eplain this to me- Carrie and Mr Big?

I've always meant to watch this but never got round to it. I've just finished season 1 and I did like it not quite getting the cult adoration yet though.

But.

Mr Big. What am I missing? Does she know his name? Is it actually Mr Big? When did he give her any clue that he wanted something serious? It seemed perfectly clear that he wanted something casual and there she was stalking him at church with his mother and demanding that he tells her he loves her!

Oh, the NYE scene from SATC1 😭😭😭😭. I well up thinking about it - 'you're not alone'. With that beautiful version of ALS playing in the background. Also, when they land in Mexico, the state of Carrie. My heart broke for her.

Tartyflette · 29/04/2020 00:35

What i really disliked most about Carrie's character was how fake she was with any of the men, but natural and real when she was with her girlfriends.
As soon as a potential boyfriend was on the scene she became coy and twee and dumbed down. It got worse as the series went on.
And simpering Carrie was hard to watch. But i stuck with it for Samantha and Miranda. And Steve.
Oh, and the diamond necklace Baryshnikov gave her. I really coveted that.

Flymetothetoon · 29/04/2020 00:47

Can't believe all the posters saying Aiden was the best.
He was a manipulative controlling twat who tried his best to change Carrie.
He tried to stop her smoking so she carried on smoking in secret.
She didn't like his dog but he foisted it on her anyway.
She loved the city but he insisted she should love the country and took her to his god awful shack in the back of beyond.

Mr Big was so more her type!

Carrie put Big on a pedestal because he was rich and powerful. Aidan was too human and needy. Miranda had the same issue with Steve. He didn't fit into her corporate world. Insecure women wanting reflected power/status from their partner.

midnightstar66 · 29/04/2020 01:21

I couldn't stand Aiden either, all bouncy and annoying and trying to change everything. Burger was just awful, the Russian made my skin crawl. Only Big ever suited her.

Chienloup · 29/04/2020 01:34

Oh Big... That record player.
I used to watch it at my friend's house every Friday night in my mid-20s. I was Team Big, she was Team Aiden.

But so many ridiculous moments. That fight in the cabin between Big and Aiden. I can't remember why Carrie got Big to go out to the cabin, but that was a twattish thing of her to do and for Big to agree to.

Whywonttheyletmeusemyusername · 29/04/2020 01:39

So many good memories...but no, it hasn't aged well at all. And what the hell was that all about ....Carrie calling Jack Burger....Burger. I mean..wtaf 🤣🤣🤣

midnightstar66 · 29/04/2020 01:52

Burger was his actual name - well almost. He was Jack Berger

Icandada · 29/04/2020 01:52

From what I can remember about it, Steve was the only one who appeared not to be some degree of neurotic. And maybe Aiden almost.

I loved it at the time, but yeah, it hasn’t aged well.

midnightstar66 · 29/04/2020 01:53

@Chienloup big called her and begged to let him come as he'd broken up with some girlfriend that had turned him all needy and he desperately wanted to talk

RyanBergarasTeeth · 29/04/2020 02:22

Aidan was a twat to carrie but good for someone else. And he was a fit 6'5 Wink

Berger was awful. Utterly awful.

The russian wasnt bad he was just very focused on his work and carrie was a needy dickhead to him. The scene when he takes the baby off her after she sets off his alarms was so lovely of him.

Big was the one for carrie.

Who remembers the cringey Skipper after miranda?

turnandfacethenamechange · 29/04/2020 02:57

I adoooored the Russian

GivenchyDahhling · 29/04/2020 03:12

How have we got this far in with nobody mentioning how adorable Harry was? He was nothing like what Charlotte thought she wanted (ie Trey) but he doted on her and loved her so much. I found their relationship so pure.

yourestandingonmyneck · 29/04/2020 05:50

@RyanBergarasTeeth - I don't remember that bit; who was the baby?

I absolutely adored it back in the day and will always have a soft spot for it.

Some episodes that stick out for me: "thirty and fabulous". - I was in my late teens / early 20s at the time so couldn't really relate to a lot of that but I loved when she was coming home in the morning from a night out and waving to the bin men as I had nights like that too (although not in NYC unfortunately!)

The one where the IT girl said NY was so boring and then fell out the window Shock I think that was what prompted Carrie to move to Paris. It was snowing in NY and very poignant. And I believe Elizabeth Taylor had her mongrel puppies.

The one where Carrie did a fashion show, fell on her face, but got back up again. After a stunned silence everybody clapped and I love the supportive whoop from Samantha and furious clapping from Miranda.

Quite an early one where Carrie is crying and phones someone from a phone box in the middle of the night and says "I know things are weird between us right now but I really need to talk; meet me in our usual place?" She walks into a cafe, you expect to see Big there but it's Miranda 😍😍 😭😭😭I love Miranda

Miranda's mum funeral was heartbreaking and as much as I can't stand Carrie, I love the way she stepped out of the aisle and supported Miranda when she clearly needed it but couldn't ask.

I love the one where nobody turned up to carries birgtgday dinner because it was crazy to see what life was like before mobiles!

Oh I just love love love it but yes, as others have said, it hasn't aged well at all.

yourestandingonmyneck · 29/04/2020 06:03

Oh, and to all the pp's calling Carrie a neurotic stalker - anyone remember when she went out with a guy who was "too normal", decided he must have a secret, was left alone in his apartment briefly and ransacked it, he came home to her trying to crow bar open a box she'd found at the back of his wardrobe? ShockBlushBlush

Rainbowb · 29/04/2020 06:15

I used to love it but I agree it hasn’t aged well. The characters all seem to be male stereotypes of women - the nymphomaniac, the polyanna, the neurotic and the career woman. Miranda was the closest to being rounded and believable. I guess the best character was New York itself though. Always upstages them all.

Lazydaisydaydream · 29/04/2020 07:31

The part when Miranda is looking after her MIL and Magda says "that is love" actually gives me tingles just to think about it.

Yeah the series is very dated now, but the core part of their friendship I think is still very relevant and I love to re-watch it. I actually think the first movie is great, the second movie.... Not so much. Maybe don't watch that one Grin

YourVagesty · 29/04/2020 07:58

Oh my god, just remembered Miranda's mum's funeral.
Sad Sad Sad

megletthesecond · 29/04/2020 08:07

Aiden and Carrie were more of a car crash than Big and Carrie.

showmethegin · 29/04/2020 08:16

STOP THE SPOILERS FOR THE OP!!!

nevernotstruggling · 29/04/2020 08:36

Harry was the only good man out of all of them. Except Stanford blatch

MyKingdomforaNameChange · 29/04/2020 10:02

Hasn't anyone mentioned Smith yet? He was the best! And the best looking, just gorgeous!

Dontfuckingsaycheese · 29/04/2020 10:44

I always felt that the one and only time that Carrie showed real passion and emotion was the time when Burger leaves her a post-it note and she swipes the vase of carnations onto the floor.

I agree, that bit with Miranda bathing her MIL is beautiful.

I did love Charlotte. 'Do you think my hair is too shiny today?' Wink

StartupRepair · 29/04/2020 10:54

I loved Charlotte too. Remember when she painstakingly cut out little wedding pictures of her face and stuck them on Trey's porn photos?

Candyflosscookie · 29/04/2020 11:18

I was always Team Miranda! Her and Steve's relationship was the most relatable. Samantha was hilarious at the time, not so sure now as I agree it was Of It's Time - but she had some fab one liners. And who can forget Saggy Arse Older Man Grin
