Can any SATC fans eplain this to me- Carrie and Mr Big?

I've always meant to watch this but never got round to it. I've just finished season 1 and I did like it not quite getting the cult adoration yet though.

But.

Mr Big. What am I missing? Does she know his name? Is it actually Mr Big? When did he give her any clue that he wanted something serious? It seemed perfectly clear that he wanted something casual and there she was stalking him at church with his mother and demanding that he tells her he loves her!

I'm actually wearing "I'm A Charlotte" t-shirt from the SATC merchandise series from Bloomingdales bought 10 years ago! It's become my favourite relaxing around the house shirt over the years. Loved the series when it came out during my last years of high school and most years of uni.

SATC embodied what I thought a dream, adult life would be. I really think it filled the gap that Instagrammers and bloggers have back in the 2000s. It was total escapism...frivolous & materialistic but somehow addictive and aspirational. The emotional storylines were well written and covered a lot more topics than I was able to relate to at the time. Things like fertility, miscarriage, children, breast cancer or debt only hit home many years later.

Definitely didn't age well, but it was great during the time. One thing that stuck with me was how successful and career-driven the women were (not so much in retrospect but it felt like that when watching with 18 years old eyes). It pushed me to do more with my life as I wanted to experience that lifestyle. Without SATC I would probably have travelled less, earned less, had less confidence, been less experimental with fashion and been quite a bit more conservative about sex. It shaped a significant part of my adulthood and I'm grateful for that!.

Completely agree @PastelRainbows I watched during similar formative years and it really gave me a cando attitude, and also shaped my adulthood too. I also like the way the four women stuck together throughout, even though the show was about dating and men, the biggest relationship was between the women and themselves. Ooh I’ve made myself a bit teary writing that-I’m off to binge watch tomorrow!

Working through all the box sets again to get through lock down, about to embark on Season 6. Yes, it has dated quite badly in some respects, but it was groundbreaking at the time and is still very entertaining now. Carrie comes across as someone who is never ever satisfied, but Miranda is just fabulous. She had some great one liners too. Anyone remember the suggestive “eat me” sandwich?

A woman’s right to shoes was the episode that really resonated with me and still does to this day.

PerspicaciaTick · 30/04/2020 02:45

Smith was divine - that was the point where I completely lost patience with Samantha.

psychomath · 30/04/2020 06:18

It's based on a real magazine column like Carrie's - the writer used made up names for some people, including Mr Big. I think when Carrie is first telling her girlfriends about him she says he's a Big Name or something, and the nickname sticks... it's been a while since I watched it though.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 30/04/2020 07:50

BettyBooJustDoinTheDoo I rewatched this yesterday- fabulous episode!!! Love the ending

nevernotstruggling · 30/04/2020 21:11

@PastelRainbows yep had this effect on me too. It's been my biggest ever style influence.

Carrie has this kind of batwing silk top and when they brought one out in house of Fraser I probably went overdrawn to buy it.

Satc cemented my ongoing love affair with new York and moving there in 2000 was living the dream.

I found the show the l word a lot like sex and the city. It's about gay relationships but it's very similar and really good.

InvisibleWomenMustBeRead · 30/04/2020 21:43

Absolutely loved SATC! It was very of it's time but still resonates a lot with me. At the time, I hated Big, but in hindsight, he is the perfect partner for Carrie.

I loved Steve & Harry but gutted that Steve cheated on Miranda! Would have thought he wasn't the type!

I enjoyed both movies too!!

Yesbutno · 01/05/2020 21:40

One of my favourite shows! Yes it's dated but I still love it, it's comforting. Love the one where nobody shows up to Carrie's birthday dinner and they meet at the coffee shop and Charlotte says that maybe instead of looking for men to be soulmates they could be each other's soulmates and then men could just be nice guys to have fun with. Makes me cry every time as their friendship is what the show is about.

Flymetothetoon · 02/05/2020 17:45

Mr Big got the nickname from the very first pilot episode when Samantha points him out in a bar and states he's the next Donald Trump but hotter.

I love SATC and Friends if I was to go in Mastermind those shows would be specialist subject 😄

MrsGibbs · 02/05/2020 18:12

It's so funny to see Donald Trump in SATC now! Still love it, yes its very of its time but I do still enjoy watching it.

The first film was decent I thought, second was horrendous!

Yesbutno · 02/05/2020 21:42

Flyme mine too Blush

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 02/05/2020 22:56

I loved Miranda. Normal woman, great friend. Charlotte had her moments too, she was so earnest. Samantha's total lack of shame wss frankly enlightening at the time. Carrie was annoying, and her clothes were weird even then by 90s standards.

Confusedasusual78 · 02/05/2020 23:02

Spot on @PastelRainbows

Confusedasusual78 · 02/05/2020 23:03

Aww this post makes me quite emosh, thinking back to my late teens/early 20’s, watching it on my little tv

GinWithASplashOfTonic · 02/05/2020 23:14

Carrie gets worse as the show goes in Miranda and Charlotte get better.

A few years ago there was like a prequel which explains a lot of carries back story . And you can sort of see why she's like she is

InvisibleWomenMustBeRead · 02/05/2020 23:17

What was the prequel?

GinWithASplashOfTonic · 02/05/2020 23:27

A quick google and it was called the Carrie Diaries. Very teenage drama only couple of seasons. Not sure where you could watch it now.
