Why is everyone suddenly attempting to be a hairdresser?

Suddenly everyone is desperate for a haircut (and people are hacking away at their own and their partners hair. What's going on? We've been in lockdown for weeks, not months. Everyone's losing the plot 😂

My step dad hacked at his with a dog grooming kit and looks like he had an arm spasm half way through and has hacked a massive uneven bit off.
My friend let her husband cut hers when they were both pissed and he's taken about 30cm off (funny at the time, but not the next morning) and I've seen various other hack jobs 🤣🤣

Me, I'm just going to wait until the professionals are available again like a sensible person 😂

I got mine cut before the lockdown, and glad we are on lockdown as she cut it badly. 😂 So it's up in a ponytail all the time for a couple more months until its long enough again to get redone by someone competent.

I'm lucky though I don't need to dye my hair either. Sucks for those that do.

Zoey92 · 20/04/2020 19:46

I cant wait to get back to work to fix hair 😂

MorrisZapp · 20/04/2020 19:54

Seriously, hairdressers are going to have to open 24 hours a day after lockdown!

I'm growing mine from short now, so I'm loving my new lengths but the colour is atrocious. I must admit I quite like storing up all these grooming issues (hair, eyebrows, botox, pedicure) for the full 'ten years younger' makeover when we get to the other side. I'm taking perverse pleasure in my terrible roots. All the better for a transformation!

My hair dying went better than expected, even my hairdresser said so when I sent her a picture! The only problem is I should have left the colour on the roots for longer as they have faded already and the grey is showing again. I might try again at the weekend

CaroleFuckinBaskin · 20/04/2020 21:29

Yeah I'm another who doesn't understand how everyone has desperately needed to cut their hair already when we have only been locked down for 4 weeks. We mostly do our own haircuts in this house anyway (and I always do my own colour) so we have been alright - we don't look like a family of weird bowl cuts I promise!

The MN haircut isnt great for taking length of the back, it's more for adding layers. This is because if you cut enough off that you lose length at the back, you are going to have very short layers at the front and that's when you run the risk of ending up looking like Cadfael!

When I used to do it, I used to just cut a small bit off at a time, cut into it, take it out and look and then start again. More time consuming, but much safer! For the love of God do not put your hair in a ponytail at the front and then cut off the amount you think you want taking off, it will be disastrous!

Ginfordinner · 20/04/2020 21:47

What kind of hair style do you have, are you going grey, and can you see without glasses on? Does your hair grow exceptionally slowly? Do you have short layered hair. What hairdressing experience do you have? Why are you assuming that everyone had their hair done the day before lockdown? Are you always this hard of thinking?

Yeah I'm another person who can't understand why people can't understand that we don't all have the kind of hair style that can be easily cut and coloured at home Hmm

I wouldn't have a clue where to start with cutting my short, layered hair. I have cut my fringe and am currently nearly rocking the Boris look, except with wavy hair that quite frankly, looks a mess Sad

Greenpop21 · 20/04/2020 21:53

My hair is shoulder length and I can trim my fringe so that’s not a problem. What is a problem is that I was due to have foil highlights 2 weeks ago. I can’t do that mystery and it is now 10 weeks since last done do my greyish roots are a couple of cm.

Greenpop21 · 20/04/2020 21:54

Myself not mystery though perhaps that is more apt.

SpnBaby1967 · 20/04/2020 22:20

My hair grows super super fast but I also have naturally frizzy/not quite wavy/but not quite curly hair which frankly is easier to manage shorter. So tonight I hacked off the 8 inches too long that it is. Tomorrow I plan a box dye job! Tbf i always do that anyway.

Hair doesn't look too bad actually, DH helped straighten out the back a bit. Thinking I need to invest in decent hair dressing scissors though, kitchen scissors just wont cut it.......no pun intended.

Ifonlywecouldwishuponastar · 20/04/2020 22:36

I did my dh's. I'm growing mine so I don't have any issues with mine. But I guess, people are having more video calls with colleagues and are worried about still looking presentable???

midsomermurderess · 20/04/2020 22:42

I see so many men on Twitter giving themselves number ones. How often did they get their hair cut before? I'm not going anywhere anytime soon. It'll wait.

Ninkanink · 20/04/2020 22:44

Some men with very sharp cuts have their hair cut every week or two.

haverhill · 20/04/2020 22:44

I quite enjoy a little hack at my hair, but it’s longish and forgiving. I even trimmed my fringe pretty successfully. There’s no way I’d attempt proper layers though.

QuinceSavedMyLife · 20/04/2020 23:03

I'm pleased with my ponytail cut and will do it again. I cut it mouth length so knew it wouldn't be too short. The back wasn't included in it so that hasn't been trimmed. I'll wait a while then may get one of my teenaged dds to do it if i get desperate. I always dye my own and have enough for 6 months. It's a 28 wash one so no roots. It's to cover grey bits but isn't too bad if left

mineofuselessinformation · 20/04/2020 23:19

Why?
Because maybe some people like me have quite a short cut (not quite pixie, but not far off - it has longer layers on top), and it grows very quickly (ideally mine needs cutting at a minimum every five weeks).
I'd already trimmed my fringe and round my ears, but really needed to do something to take the weight off.
I'm menopausal too, and can't quite rock the sweaty greasy fringe look!
This is me after taking about an inch off.

Why is everyone suddenly attempting to be a hairdresser?
whatdoyoudonow · 20/04/2020 23:37

Mother Nature is busy giving me beautiful, natural 'silver' highlights ... who needs a hairdresser?

I'm going to look like a witch if it grows any longer/gets any greyer

Franticbutterfly · 21/04/2020 00:07

Most women get their hair done every other month and most men once a month so we are all
Having a crack at it ourselves. My DH and I did a really good job on his with the old clippers we had.

Tillygetsit · 21/04/2020 00:41

Ii have psoriasis on my scalp and my hair is ridiculously think. Very very itchy in this warm weather. I keep asking dh to have a go at thinning it but he refuses. It's for comfort and sanity, not vanity!

MelonSugar · 21/04/2020 00:45

I shaved all mine off on the first week of the shutdown Grin I've always wanted to know what I would like like with it all shaved off and seemed the perfect time to do it with not having to go anywhere anytime soon while I got used to it.

PerspicaciaTick · 21/04/2020 00:55

I've cut a fringe for DD and she looks stunning.
DS requested a bizarre shaven style with floppy top. I have given him what he wants as it will have grown out again by May.
DH has had a tidy up to be presentable in meetings, pretty OK really.
I have done the MN cut - couldn't bear my hair getting trapped while I slept. I've done it many times before, but admit that I may have been a bit more confident than usual. But the headset hides my hair anyway.l

HeIenaDove · 21/04/2020 02:51

Those of you talking about your hair needing to look presentable for conference calls/work

Surely employers need to adjust their expectations Its a pandemic FFS.

HeIenaDove · 21/04/2020 03:13

Mine is dark brunette but the grey roots are through now. My last appointment for roots and a cut was 12th March. Have it done every five weeks so next one was supposed to be 16th April. My fringe is getting on my nerves as its now in my eyes making them itch. No way im cutting it though. I shall have to pin it and im using the Loreal root spray. Fringe is driving me insane.

HeIenaDove · 21/04/2020 03:15

I have long very thick hair so have never attempted to dye it at home Too much hassle.

nannygoat50 · 21/04/2020 17:26

Because some people’s hair grows quickly and fringes etc are in people’s eyes!!!!

DanceItOut · 21/04/2020 17:38

Surely it depends on the style of hair. I need to trim my fringe every 2/3 weeks which fortunately I do myself anyway. My husband was having his hair cut every 3 weeks as he keeps it very short but I used to cut it for him before he decided he wanted to treat himself to getting it done at a hairdressers so now I just do it again. Due to having. Symptoms After coming into contact with a confirmed case we have been isolating for 5 weeks now I shaved my husbands hair in week 2 It is now looking like it needs shaving again. My daughter has long hair and no fringe so she’s fine I don’t need to worry about hers unless in another month or so I might need to maybe trim the split ends a bit. My son is a whole different story he wants to grow his hair while in lockdown because he doesn’t want me to cut it. It’s currently resembling a helmet but right now I’m not worrying about it. Some people are cutting their hair just for fun because they are bored I imagine but for men in particular I can imagine they are having to shave their own hair or get their partners to because it’s short and needs cutting more often, same for women with short hair.
