Why is everyone suddenly attempting to be a hairdresser?

Suddenly everyone is desperate for a haircut (and people are hacking away at their own and their partners hair. What's going on? We've been in lockdown for weeks, not months. Everyone's losing the plot 😂

My step dad hacked at his with a dog grooming kit and looks like he had an arm spasm half way through and has hacked a massive uneven bit off.
My friend let her husband cut hers when they were both pissed and he's taken about 30cm off (funny at the time, but not the next morning) and I've seen various other hack jobs 🤣🤣

Me, I'm just going to wait until the professionals are available again like a sensible person 😂

This thread is hilarious 😂
I can’t stop laughing 😆

BossAssBitch · 20/04/2020 14:33

My DH laughed at his friends who had their hair cut by their wives a week ago. Now they are all laughing at his hair (over their Zoom chats) so he has asked me to cut it. Honestly, I will do a TERRIBLE job of it, I just don't have the skills. And he has thick coarse hair, I really don't want to do it!

I have long hair and do my own roots / rarely have it cut so I won't have to go down that inevitably disastrous road thankfully.

I drank a bottle of wine last week and decided to offer to shave everyone's heads. To my surprise (and joy) they all said yes.

It turns out my DC - who were quite good-looking pre-scalping - are ugly looking things when they've bald heads. Their hair grows at an alarming rate, though, so neither will look too dreadful for too long. DH calls them Phil and Grant which makes it all worthwhile.

DH, trusting individual that he is, asked me to do his because it was annoying him. I gave him a quick trim with the hairdressing scissors I use on my fringe. It looked OK. Then the clippers that I'd ordered just as lockdown started arrived so I gave him a proper go over with them and he's happy with the result.

I'm desperate to have a go at DS, who's beginning to resemble Chewbacca's hairier cousin, but he's resisting so far.

FudgeBrownie2019 · 20/04/2020 14:36

However, my own hair won't be touched by anyone during lockdown. I'm naturally very blonde so roots aren't a problem but my fringe is so long and I know if I trim it I'll become the Tiger King and never be able to leave the house without people yelling obscenities about Carole Baskin.

Redcrayons · 20/04/2020 14:36

I was due a cut and colour the week of lockdown so I’m very overdue now. I’m not too bothered about the length (shoulder length bob), but the colour is dreadful. I’d forgotten how dark I really am, and so much grey! Fortunately, I’m not going anywhere soon. I had some dark thoughts when I was drunk of shaving it all off so it would grow into a chic pixie cut when this is all over. YT was giving me confidence in my non existent skills.

DCs are a bit unkempt, but they’re teenagers so it’s adds to the overall look.
I have suggested getting some clippers to them but they’re not horrified at the idea of me doing it, and to be fair I don’t blame them.

TeaAddict235 · 20/04/2020 14:37

That Mumsnet haircut is a misery on every head of hair. It does not look good at all. Stop using it. For the sake of humanity!!!

enjoyingSun · 20/04/2020 14:41

We have hair clippers in house already - it really simple to do DS and DH even with double crowns.

I haven't cut mine or daughter hair - though have in the past - can do quite a good bob as a hair dresser explained how when I was a child and it stuck with me.

DD1 experimented with hair dyes as she not in school so perfect time.

Every time I find a good hair dresser they or we move on so it's much less an issue for us than others.

I do think many people are just being daft for the sake of it though - wait or do it properly.

Tarararara · 20/04/2020 14:42

DH is the most vain man I know when it comes to his hair, spends a fortune having it cut every 4 weeks, but it was starting to look too big on Zoom calls, so I said I'd do it (clippers and hairdressing scissors bought for the task). It took me about an hour all in, I took things very slowly and did lots of blending using the different clipper length attachments, trimmed on top and then zig-zagged into the hair like the hairdresser does. The result? DH says its amongst the best haircuts he's ever had, and asked if I can continue doing it post-lockdown!

aspoonfulofyourownmedicine · 20/04/2020 14:44

I did DS's with clippers, a number 4 all over last week. He normally has a haircut every 3-4 weeks as his hair grows ridiculously quick. He was due a cut just before we got locked down and unfortunately his appointment got cancelled. Three weeks after the appointment as due, the options were a number 4 haircut or pigtails. He chose the haircut. Poor bairn couldn't see because it was that thick, long and unruly.

I'm no hairdresser, and it's definitely a skilled profession!

aspoonfulofyourownmedicine · 20/04/2020 14:46

DH also cut my hair for me, he always does, I have waist length, poker straight hair, so a trim straight across with hairdressing scissors takes 10 minutes and looks much better too :D

DarkDarkNight · 20/04/2020 14:47

I trimmed my Son’s fringe because I like him with long hair anyway but he was overdue a haircut so in desperate need of a trim.

I gave myself a side fringe because the scissors were already in my hand and I couldn’t stop myself Grin

NoSauce · 20/04/2020 14:55

No way I am I cutting my own hair. Wouldn’t risk looking ridiculous.

Essexgirlupnorth · 20/04/2020 14:56

I cut my hair was well overdue a haircut. Had balayage which was growing out so cut it the very blond ends so have a shoulder length Bob which looks fine especially as my hair has a bit of a wave for hides it being slightly on even. My hairdresser is now on mat leave so she won't see the results anyway.
My husband cut his own hair for ages and has clipper at home so he will probably do his. My daughter won't let me cut hers but she just needs a trim really

Devlesko · 20/04/2020 15:00

Why do people abbreviate the word sarcastic for snarky, instead of sarcy? There's no "n" in sarcastic.

wowfudge · 20/04/2020 15:01

It's not an abbreviation

novacaneforthepain · 20/04/2020 15:02

@buttcrackmcheese brilliant 🤣

Ninkanink · 20/04/2020 15:03

It’s not an abbreviation for sarcastic...

JonHammIsMyJamm · 20/04/2020 15:04

I’m a bit fed up, tbh. Obviously hair is small fry in the grand scheme of things but I’d spent the last 18 months diligently going to the hairdresser every 8 weeks for a trim, olaplex and root-blur or balayage (I alternate between the two). Previously my hair was fried from disastrous home bleaching and infrequent cuts, so I’d got my act together and it was starting to really show the benefits of it all. The crappy stuff has pretty much grown out and the regular care had it looking good. Unfortunately, I was due to go in the week we locked down and so my hair is creeping into disaster zone territory.

I’m resisting the urge to bleach and snip at it because i know it’ll near as damn it put me back to square one. It’s so tempting though. There was a shaved head thread on here recently and do many of the posters looked fabulous.

Clevererthanyou · 20/04/2020 15:15

buttcrack I have shaved my head, is there a problem? Smile

Ginfordinner · 20/04/2020 15:19

Because not all of us have low maintenance hair like you Lovemusic. What don't you understand about women not wanting the grey straggly grown out layered short hair look?

Josette77 · 20/04/2020 15:23

I shaved both dh and Ds's heads. Not all of us are white with low maintenance hair.

Ginfordinner · 20/04/2020 15:26

I have been doing DH's hair for years, using clippers. I don't think that look would suit me though Grin.

Exactly Josette77

rc22 · 20/04/2020 15:26

I was due to have mine cut in the first week of lockdown so now it's a fair bit longer than I like it to be. I just keep putting it in a ponytail.

Clevererthanyou · 20/04/2020 15:27

The Carole Baskin comment did make me laugh even if some posters here are dicks 😂
