Why is everyone suddenly attempting to be a hairdresser?

Suddenly everyone is desperate for a haircut (and people are hacking away at their own and their partners hair. What's going on? We've been in lockdown for weeks, not months. Everyone's losing the plot 😂

My step dad hacked at his with a dog grooming kit and looks like he had an arm spasm half way through and has hacked a massive uneven bit off.
My friend let her husband cut hers when they were both pissed and he's taken about 30cm off (funny at the time, but not the next morning) and I've seen various other hack jobs 🤣🤣

Me, I'm just going to wait until the professionals are available again like a sensible person 😂

Having said that, I'm itching to cut a long fringe.... I need to be talked out of it daily Grin

TheChosenTwo · 20/04/2020 11:08

No one is touching their own hair here! We all just had cuts shortly before we were locked in and although we will be due another one in a couple of weeks, we aren’t going anywhere, we don’t really care about having well groomed hair at the moment and none of us are hairdressers or have any skills in that department so we will wait until this is over and get tidied up properly.
I’ve found it very entertaining though seeing people post their efforts online, my friend has accidentally given herself a mullet by trimming the bits by her face and ignoring the back Grin

CockCarousel · 20/04/2020 11:09

I had a fringe cut in for the first time in years just before lockdown. I had to attack that with scissors the other day (long fringes and glasses are... confusing). Usually I painstakingly research everything, but not this time. I now look quite a bit like Jim Carey did in Dumber and Dumber.

I am taking the opportunity to grow out my fringe. I’m at the stage now where it’s down to below my lower eyelids and is really irritating. If I clip it back it looks awful but no one can see me so I don’t care so much. This is the point at which I usually give up and get it cut back in.

Husband bought clippers and I have done his hair and not made too bad a job of it.

alloutoffucks · 20/04/2020 11:09

I am with you OP, I did cut my fringe. DP and DS hair looks overdue a cut, but hardly horrific. DDs hair is long so looks fine.

Ninkanink · 20/04/2020 11:10

Is this a question that really needed asking? Hmm

My hair isn’t a problem - it’s just cut into a blunt lob, so it can keep growing. My DH needs a haircut every six weeks or he starts to get an extreme mophead look which he doesn’t like. He still has to work and look professional and well groomed. I’ll be cutting his hair this week.

Wotrewelookinat · 20/04/2020 11:11

Loads of ‘how to’ videos on YouTube.

BogRollBOGOF · 20/04/2020 11:12

My family were getting due before lockdown. DS2 is already brewing for a second cut.

I have hairdressing scissors and can do a respectable job. I know the way their hair lies and can work with that. It's not a proffesional finish, but they do look like themselves. I do the MN cut on myself to take the ends off my long hair and it's fine. Better than inches of dry, split ends.

ssd · 20/04/2020 11:12

Who cares if some people cut their own hair? Can't imagine why you'd feel the need to ask op.

OddBoots · 20/04/2020 11:13

If they like the result they can save a fortune in the future by going DIY but if they don't like it then very few people will see it and they might have the chance to try again in a few weeks and if not it will have grown enough to get sorted before going back out in public. Win win really.

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 20/04/2020 11:14

DS wants me to help him with his hair, he goes to the barber every 3 weeks because his hair grows like mad and he has it very short with a skin fade- he has a double crown and when the top gets to a certain length he ends up with a duck's bum which he can't get to stay flat. He's very brave, I haven't gone near his hair since the usual nit shave when he was in primary.

BogRollBOGOF · 20/04/2020 11:14

DS1 needed doing because if we wait it out, his hair would be halfway down his back and he refuses to tie it up. He has a nice shoulder length bob now Grin

SmileyClare · 20/04/2020 11:15

CockCarousel Grin stop seeing Jim Carey and think more Uma Thurman's fringe in Pulp Fiction. Short fringes are cool.

The trick with fringe cutting is to do it dry, comb and hold it down hard, sharp scissors, take far less off than you imagine it needs, leave the outer edges slightly longer and do it sober.

CatBatCat · 20/04/2020 11:17

This is what hats, clips, hairbands and scarves are for. I'm waiting for them to reopen before cutting again.

MistyIsland · 20/04/2020 11:17

I had my done the week before lockdown, my next appointment is next Friday! Sadly it’s not going to happen! I’d rather wait a few extra weeks and get my hairdresser to do it than me completely muck it up!!!!

I can see the temptation to cut your own hair looks at split ends

Ginfordinner · 20/04/2020 11:17

I just don't have the skill or the eyesight to do my own hair.

TheLovelinessOfDemons · 20/04/2020 11:17

Our barber's is open, worryingly.

TheOrigBrave · 20/04/2020 11:17

I do know what you mean OP, I really don't think so many people got their hair cut every 3 weeks and it would be SO in need of a cut. I think people are just having some fun.

DS2 did need a hair cut, but he can wait. I quite like the Big Hair look - he's like a bear.

Mine is long, it can grow longer and it can wait for the next lot of highlights.
DS1 has mad curly hair which is quite long, so he can happily do nothing.

My brows.....that's another story!

expatinspain · 20/04/2020 11:19

God there are some right snarky replies on here. Clearly it was meant to be lighthearted! My mum sent me the picture of my stepdad this morning and we were all having a laugh about it, as was my friend with her drunken cut.

I'm certainly not smug, whichever poster said that. I've got a few grey hairs growing through and certainly don't have long luscious locks. That's why no one, myself included, will be hacking away at mine. I haven't been blessed with the best hair genetically, so don't want to make a bad situation worse!

I’m actually doing a surprisingly good hair at cutting my kids hair with clippers. It’s not far off what the barber achieves. I’m going to have to try and do DPs at the weekend as he’s still working and it’s starting to look a little New Romantic 😬

megletthesecond · 20/04/2020 11:23

Because the sooner it's trimmed the sooner any disasters can grow out.

LoseLooseLucy · 20/04/2020 11:26

I'm cutting my own 🙈

It grows like wildfire so I need to keep on top of it. I brushed it into a centre parting and then tied a bobble under my chin and cut underneath that, it looks pretty neat. I've also cut my daughter's into a just past shoulder bob.

I think a new career beckons 🤔

GrouchyKiwi · 20/04/2020 11:27

I get headaches when my hair is too long so I gave it a modified version of the Mumsnet haircut and I'm very pleased with the result. Plus no more hair-related headaches. Winning all round.

circusintown · 20/04/2020 11:29

OP - I agree.

It's been a few weeks. Within days people were shaving their heads.

They just love the drama of it all

expatinspain · 20/04/2020 11:30

justanotherneightinparadise DP is still working too, but he'd never let me near his in a million years, especially as we've only got kitchen scissors 😂. I think he's going to be going for the man bun soon.
