Why is everyone suddenly attempting to be a hairdresser?

Suddenly everyone is desperate for a haircut (and people are hacking away at their own and their partners hair. What's going on? We've been in lockdown for weeks, not months. Everyone's losing the plot 😂

My step dad hacked at his with a dog grooming kit and looks like he had an arm spasm half way through and has hacked a massive uneven bit off.
My friend let her husband cut hers when they were both pissed and he's taken about 30cm off (funny at the time, but not the next morning) and I've seen various other hack jobs 🤣🤣

Me, I'm just going to wait until the professionals are available again like a sensible person 😂

It's only been 4 weeks since hairdressers closed, how long can everyone's hair have grown- its only had time to grow about a cm! ?

Mine needs a trim every 6 to 8 weeks to stay in shape, it was last cut 3 weeks before lockdown. It was a good cut at the time and will probably last a couple more weeks but I can't do it myself so I'm going to look pretty messy by the time it gets done again. And I have work meetings so I need to look neat down to my shoulders. I don't use colour so at least I don't have to worry about roots.

DH has been trimming over his ears but says he's going to stop before he ends up with a mullet.

DS hasn't had his hair cut in 5 years and isn't planning to start now. He just ordered more curl products from Amazon.

ErrolTheDragon · 20/04/2020 15:30

DH bought some clippers in February- I've given him a trim with them on a not too short setting, it was very easy and looks fine.
Possibly helps that there's no question of doing anything fancy with the top or front.Grin

I live overseas and we've been locked down a lot longer than the Uk.

My hair needed doing when lockdown started so it was horrendous.

I make no apologies for not wanting to look like Myra hindley when I'm working like a dog (12 hour days) and on 9 plus hours of zoom calls.

I cut my own hair at the weekend (it's a blunt bob) and brace yourselves, did home highlights with Jolen tache bleach and a knife.

It looks really good and I feel like a new woman.

I need some positivity getting through this!

I got so fed up I cut my hair for the first time ever. I was due to go to the hairdresser the first week of this lockdown, so it was already looking a mess.

Oh the relief, just taking an inch off all round has lightened it up and no stupid fringe in my eyes.

I can recommend it for the feel good factor alone.

Make sure you use sharp scissor, hairdressing ones if possible.

onemorecupofcoffeefortheroad · 20/04/2020 16:03

My wife (same sex marriage if that matters) has short grey hair and usually sports a spiky look that's quite cool. When it grows it falls flat on her head and she looks rather matronly and more like the middle aged woman she is! She's like Samson in reverse - loses her psychic strength when her hair grows and so has it cut every 4-6 weeks. We were away when lock down happened and when we got back all the hairdressers were closed.
She was a desperate woman so we bought hairdressing scissors and thinning scissors online - I watched a load of hair cutting tutorials on YouTube and last Friday I took the plunge and her hair got the chop.

She loves it, I love it, it looks better than any cut she's ever had professionally and all her colleagues are complimenting her on it in various Zoom work meetings. Maybe a new profession for me when this is all over except I'm middle aged too so probably a bit late for a new career ...

Thinkingabout1t · 20/04/2020 16:04

I changed my mind about a haircut I'd planned earlier this year, when I remembered that long hair is much easier to deal with than a short cut growing out. With my usual cut, I would soon be at the stage of pushing it off my face every few minutes. Touching my face, very bad!

Long hair is easy to tie back. So I'm rediscovering my inner hippie.

Littlepond · 20/04/2020 16:06

I cut mine yesterday. It’s horrific. I can’t look at myself in a mirror. I am the ugliest thing I have ever seen.

MrsSnitchnose · 20/04/2020 16:14

I was due to go during the Easter holidays. Colour not looking too bad (low maintenance balyage)

I do with a trim, but no way am I touching it, I spend too much on my hair to risk ruining it for the sake of a few more weeks

Whenwillthisbeover · 20/04/2020 16:25

I’m waiting too OP and I knew your post was light hearted.

I agree, mine looks bloody awful, the cut is still OK but my roots are now about two inches long. I was due to go the Saturday before lockdown and it was cancelled by the salon.

It would look worse if I started blobbing home colour on it.

When I go on video calls for work now I make sure it’s newly washed and carefully arrange it like a combover so my roots are less visible. The headphones help.

ExD1938 · 20/04/2020 16:26

I like that one Smiley. I've decided to just let it be, it was short, now its a mess but I'm looking on it as an opportunity to find something easy to manage in the future, and I think this may be the way forward.
And - who cares anyway?

Uygop · 20/04/2020 16:28

At the start of lockdown, teenage DD had very long hair. She has now cut most of it off and has a short bob. She's done quite a good job, to be honest, and it suits her.
I haven't had a cut in months and am going to ask DD to do it for me. Should have had it cut months ago, but put it off.

AddressLabel · 20/04/2020 16:31

Some of these posts are hilarious. I rock a messy bed head type haircut so I can probably get away with not having a haircut until lockdown is over.
DH wanted a haircut so I took the clippers to him a couple of weeks ago. He was pleased with the result and said I can do it again Grin
Toddler’s hair is starting to look a bit wild but I’m not touching that, he screamed his head off and thrashed about for the barber the last time, so he can keep his Boris hair for longer.

biwinoone · 20/04/2020 16:32

Because everyone in our family has hair which grow really fast. I gave myself layers, child a fringe and husband a haircut. It's not that hard if you know what you are doing. Fortunately for me that I had a long experience of fixing bad haircuts. Plus men hair aren't that hard. You can get clippers with different length attachments which makes it very easy to keep it even. They are not even that expensive atm and argos has loads on sale.

saraclara · 20/04/2020 16:38

Ha! I finished a long phone call and went into my kitchen to find my lockdown houseguest sitting on the kitchen floor with a tiny mirror in front of him, and surrounded by hair, having used a beard trimmer to try to shave his head. Which looked okay at the front but was... very not fine at the back! Thank goodness he had someone around to take over and fix it!

NoWordForFluffy · 20/04/2020 16:40

Because my daughter needs to be able to see, so her fringe needs a regular trim (I don't go as short as our hairdresser as I'm scared of going too short!).

withaheyandahoandaheyheyho · 20/04/2020 16:41

I'm eyeing DP with trepidation. He's had a very respectable short back and sides the whole time I've known him, but as a teenager he had hair down to his bum and it looked awful. He also makes occasional noises about shaving his head and I'm worried he'll decide that now is the time. I can't decide which would be worse!

Vinorosso74 · 20/04/2020 16:54

I've cut DP's twice with clippers. First attempt didn't take enough off so used a shorter setting at the weekend. It's not as good as the barbers do as I've not been able to blend it like they do. The clippers are quite old so aren't as effective.
I gave DD a trin as she was due one.
I was going to get a cut just before this all happened but didn't. I'm growing it but could do with losing the ends! I'll be in need of highlights soon too.

frazzledasarock · 20/04/2020 17:12

Because DP’s hair grows really fast and he gets it cut every three weeks.

I watched a YouTube tutorial and offered to cut his hair out of sheer boredom I must admit. Was surprised he’d agreed.

It looked really good (much to my shock).

mypoorfurbaby · 20/04/2020 17:24

Because I was due a cut the day of lock down. I have very short hair that needs cutting every 6-7 weeks or it looks like a terrible mop.
At 10 weeks I was feeling really bad about my hair, it couldn't be styled in anyway and I am still going out to work and seeing other people.

StillMedusa · 20/04/2020 17:32

We were all very overdue haircuts before lock down.
DH... I clipper it anyway
DD2.. waistlength and needed 6 inches off. I did it and it's fine
DS2 .hair like Ronald McDonald unfortunately and he's working in a supermarket so I did no 3 up the back and tidied the rest up..looks fine and may well do it again.
DD2's finance... (lives with us) did his own with the clippers ad some scissors this morning. I've seen worse...

Mine's long and greying and will stay that way unless I trim my fringe! I am glad I grew out my colour a couple of years ago tho!

Zoey92 · 20/04/2020 17:40

Oh dear me 😂 (hairdresser here 🙋‍♀️)

geojojo · 20/04/2020 17:43

I'm contemplating cutting myself a fringe. Because I'm bored and because if it looks awful no one (apart from my family!) will see me.

YesPleaseMary · 20/04/2020 18:51

I trimmed DD1’s long overdue straggly split ends and acquitted myself quite well for a first time amateur. However DH is getting twitchy about his and wants me to have a go...
no-one but a trained professional is going to touch my hair though. My hair grows really slowly and I’m just about done growing out all the box dye so once this is over I’m treating myself to a proper new colour!

T0tallyFuckedUpFamily · 20/04/2020 19:01

You’re going to have your work cut out for you, after lockdown. Grin

dementedma · 20/04/2020 19:06

I bought decent hairdressing scissors and thinning scissors and let ds(18) lose on my hair at the weekend with the understanding that the risk was all mine and I wouldn’t kill him if it was awful.
he did a pretty damn good job, so much so that we then gloved and masked him and he went round to cut my 85 year old mother’s huge curly mop of thick white hair. He did comment it was like shearing a sheep but again a tidy job.
I have shaved his with the clippers so we all look fairly tidy
