Why is everyone suddenly attempting to be a hairdresser?

Suddenly everyone is desperate for a haircut (and people are hacking away at their own and their partners hair. What's going on? We've been in lockdown for weeks, not months. Everyone's losing the plot 😂

My step dad hacked at his with a dog grooming kit and looks like he had an arm spasm half way through and has hacked a massive uneven bit off.
My friend let her husband cut hers when they were both pissed and he's taken about 30cm off (funny at the time, but not the next morning) and I've seen various other hack jobs 🤣🤣

Me, I'm just going to wait until the professionals are available again like a sensible person 😂

I too have been trimming my own hair for around two years, my style is long with a few face framing layers,I also put a few highlights in just along the top, I was booked in for highlights the week of lockdown so was in desperate need for them to be done.

delilahbucket · 21/04/2020 19:06

Dp gets his hair cut every four weeks as it grows very fast. He would have been due the first week of lockdown. He got to the weekend just gone and I cut it. He's still working in a customer facing role and needs to look smart. Never cut hair in my life but I was really pleased with the result, and it wasn't a blade one all over!

I've been thinking about shaving my hair off. Always wanted to and thinking this would be the optimum time - think I'll look dreadful and probably regret it but I suppose it's better to regret what you do rather than what you don't do 🤷‍♀️

DH complains that his glasses don’t fit properly if his hair gets to long and puffy at the sides, so we gave him a trim. It wasn’t too bad from the front or sides, but he should’ve waited for me instead of attempting to shave the back of his head on his own.

LoveIslandVirgin · 21/04/2020 19:17

I’d no choice but to trim DH’s hair this morning. Did it in the back garden so I wouldn’t have to vacuum hairs from every nook and cranny for the next 2 years. He has a job interview on Thursday and does not look managerial with the shaggy mop he was sporting.

Of course it’ll be my fault if he doesn’t get the job Halo Confused.

Oblomov20 · 21/04/2020 19:24

I used the clippers on Dh, Ds1, Ds2, on its longest setting. But then I am a dabb hand with clippers.

skodadoda · 21/04/2020 19:38

OP, I was due to get my hair cut the day they closed. I have not had a trim for over 9 weeks; so it hasn't been just weeks. I have a short style and, at 70+ years old, my hair does not grow gracefully.

TSSDNCOP · 21/04/2020 19:40

I look as though I've tipped an ashtray into my parting. I have a very technical short cut that takes ages in the salon because I have very think hair. I am about a week to 10 days from it looking it's absolute worst, but still no way I'd touch it myself.
DS looks like a mushroom as his hair is like mine. DH looks like Blakey.

mylifestory · 21/04/2020 19:44

So they can post pics on social media, and have something to say. Same as going on fancy holidays so they have something to talk about in the office when they're back

Longpinknails · 21/04/2020 19:45

I would never attempt it, but I’m feeling quite smug in all this...my son is a hairdresser - and lives with us. Wink

Bobbi73 · 21/04/2020 19:51

A couple of years ago I decided I was bored with my long easy to manage hair and went for a graduated Bob. I love it but it takes quite a lot of looking after and grows out pretty weirdly. I was booked in a day after lock down was announced.
I'm going to let it grow out some more but then I'll have to trim it at the front so I don't have wonky hair. My eldest is beginning to look like cousin it so I guess I'll be one of those "hairdressers"

LoveBeingAMum555 · 21/04/2020 19:51

I have short hair usually cut every 4 weeks, coloured every other appointment. Had to cancel my last colour before lockdown and I will probably be adding a home colour to my next supermarket delivery. We are shielding DS so goodness knows what my hair will look like at the end of this.

Chesneyhawkes1 · 21/04/2020 19:51

I'm going to have to trim my own fringe. Grows quickly and is getting on my nerves now.

HeIenaDove · 21/04/2020 20:21

A fringe in the eyes is not exactly conducive to not touching the face!!

JFM27 · 21/04/2020 20:53

I had very short hair for years but grew it a few years ago,im so glad, its shoulder length not curly with bit of kink and i dye my own anyway.I cant wait for my fab hairdresser to trim it ,and she straightens it way better than me,but at least it looks pretty much like it normally does,Id never cut my own hair, ever.

BryonyBev · 21/04/2020 20:55

I've got a wig. So there.

LoveIslandVirgin · 21/04/2020 21:30

@mylifestory I’m grateful DH doesn’t use social media and there is no way I’d ruin my perfect persona by sharing photos of his hair! I’m going to spend all tomorrow training him to keep his head at a peculiar angle in front of his laptop!

SnowsInWater · 21/04/2020 22:38

Hairdressers can open here (Aus) as they are classed as essential services!!!! Originally you could be in there for a maximum of 30 minutes but I think that has changed now, I haven’t bothered checking as I think it is so stupid. Mine has sensibly shut. Seems like a very easy way to undo all the good work of the past few weeks if you have been doing the right thing and staying home.

bellinisurge · 21/04/2020 22:47

DH gets grumpy if his hair grows too long. We bought some clippers at the start of lockdown. Sorted. I even asked him to cut my hair which needs no help being thin and straggly and needs to be kept shortish. He did a fine job.
Long hair makes me miserable too.

happychops · 21/04/2020 22:49

My hairdresser supplied the hair dye colour & make and where to buy it.DH kindly ‘had a go” and frankly it looks great. Won’t be letting him near the scissors though!

Frequency · 21/04/2020 22:53

I don't why but even my daughter is at it and she lives with a hairdresser. I'm starting to think it's some kind of contagion or a weird hysteria sweeping the nation.

To be fair to her though, she's not done a bad job. It's not good but it's not bad. If you're not hairdresser you won't notice the mistakes she's made and they won't irritate the life out of you everytime you look at her.

Rachel709 · 21/04/2020 23:01

I think it's funny.

neekeem · 22/04/2020 06:57

I dyed my hair blue. Because if it’s horrible no one really sees it anyway.

Forgot about Zoom.

No one said a word 😂 My hair was bright red that had faded to orange and it was looking silly so I had nothing to lose (I’m naturally blonde).

It doesn’t suit me but it’s not a disaster! Even when lockdown ends, getting an appointment at the hairdresser is going to be difficult, and I assume they’ll have more social distancing which will reduce the appointments.

NoobThebrave · 22/04/2020 10:25

Because it is so much fun and for once you are allowed to try based on the "no one will see me for 6 weeks". I loved it and am itching for another go!! I would say not bad at all and am considering training to be a hairdressers and am currently eyeing up the short haired dog to see if she needs a trim Grin
