Why is everyone suddenly attempting to be a hairdresser?

Suddenly everyone is desperate for a haircut (and people are hacking away at their own and their partners hair. What's going on? We've been in lockdown for weeks, not months. Everyone's losing the plot 😂

My step dad hacked at his with a dog grooming kit and looks like he had an arm spasm half way through and has hacked a massive uneven bit off.
My friend let her husband cut hers when they were both pissed and he's taken about 30cm off (funny at the time, but not the next morning) and I've seen various other hack jobs 🤣🤣

Me, I'm just going to wait until the professionals are available again like a sensible person 😂

I'm going to have to tackle mine soon I'm starting to look a bit bedraggled. I was overdue a cut by about 3weeks when lockdown happened so 🤷🏻‍♀️ . The overall length is fine I just need to sort my fringe and dye it. I still have to go into work and look presentable or else I'd leave well alone.

The last time I cut my fringe it was seriously wonky but I'll need to give it a shot and just take tiny bits off til it looks ok.

Bigsighall · 20/04/2020 11:31

Coz I was bored (and a bit pissed). Tbf I’ve had worse cuts at the hairdressers!

expatinspain · 20/04/2020 11:33

GrouchyKiwi Wow, that's a nightmare! Luckily me and DD have fine hair, so not much weight. That must be a nightmare getting headaches when your hair grows!

My hair is long but horribly dry at the ends. I havent had it cut since last year and got a hairdressing voucher for my birthday which I hadn't got round to using. I'm really regretting it now (but not desperate enough to make an attempt to do it myself)

Amotherof6 · 20/04/2020 11:34

Why do people come onto Mumsnet and ask stupid, obvious questions?

Chewbecca · 20/04/2020 11:34

DS did his own because he couldn’t see his screen through it which was far more important than his appearance.

expatinspain · 20/04/2020 11:35

Bigsighall You must be a natural hairdresser to do a decent job while drunk!

I cut mine myself normally anyway; chopped a bit more than usual off this time as I thought it was a good time to experiment. If it goes wrong it doesn't matter as no-one will see me anyway really and anyway it's only hair and will grow back. I'm not too bothered about looking a bit scruffy (no change from normal) Grin

I think my hair must grow very slowly.

I had it cut on 19 December and am just beginning to think it's changing style now.

(Normally I come out of the hairdresser's with a gorgeous sharp pixie crop, and go in five months later with a messy bob...)

gassylady · 20/04/2020 11:38

Haven't had mine cut or dyed since November (couldn’t after a minor op) I’m taking the opportunity to grow the dye out and see what lurks beneath. I have ordered some hairdressing scissors and may be brave enough to shorten it a bit

Dowser · 20/04/2020 11:40

I had mine done, trim and blonde highlights end of feb for our holiday.
I usually have highlights done every 6-8 weeks .
Length doesn’t matter as its long enough to go into a pony tail, highlights at the moment blend with brown and greys
I’ve sometimes gone 3 months without new highlights...however I cut my fringe a bit too short the other week..it’s fine now 😂

Dowser · 20/04/2020 11:41

Oh yes, I had to do my dh about two weeks ago.watched the videos, I kind of followed the cut , so all in all not too bad a job
But I wanted it perfect.
He’ll be getting ready for another one next week

Ginfordinner · 20/04/2020 11:43

DD has just done my roots and trimmed the straggly bits round my neck.

Short hair that is growing out just looks very scruffy. And as my hair is wavy and not as thick as it used to be it is beginning to look horrific.

circusintown · 20/04/2020 11:53

A headache with 3, 4, 5 weeks of hair growth? I have never heard of that before!

But I'd be keeping it short short if that was me

expatinspain · 20/04/2020 11:53

GinforDinner How old is your DD? I dread to think what DD 10 would do to my hair! I let her do a makeover the other week and I looked a bit like The Joker Grin

gassylady Good idea to get some proper scissors. I'm still a bit 😮 that my stepdad did his with a dog grooming kit. I don't know what he was thinking! I think him and my mum must had had a few JD & cokes for her birthday, discovered the dog grooming kit and decided to give it a go!

I hate my grey roots and last time I had it dyed was 5 weeks ago so I dyed my hair yesterday and I am absolutely in love with the colour. It looks as good as the professionally done one at a fraction of the price. Very pleased

EdersonsSmileyTattoo · 20/04/2020 12:01

I was due to go for colour, highlights, roots and a trim two days after we were locked down so the last time I saw the inside of a hairdressers was mid Feb Blush

I look hideous, I’ve had to clip my fringe up, with my thick frames glasses I’m currently rocking an Olive from On The Buses look!

There’s not a chance I’m touching it though, far too many home hair dye disasters previously! Blush

expatinspain · 20/04/2020 12:04

Rhianna1980 I think dying is definitely more straightforward than cutting, although I haven't tried to do mine since I was a teen. What dye do you use?

OP posts:
Roundtoedshoes · 20/04/2020 12:04

Totally agree OP. The mass panic about hair is baffling when it’s just been weeks!

I do understand that shorter hair requires more maintenance, but use a headband/clips. No, I’ll just use some blunt old scissors - madness!

At least no one will see the result...except on FaceTime...or when we probably get let out in a few weeks.

pinkazing · 20/04/2020 12:04

So far trimmed DS hair he is now refusing to leave the house til it grows back - win win. And trimmed my fringe, but really pleased with it. I wish I had the courage to dye my hair but being red I’ve seen so many horrors, so need to wait for the salon to be opened.

Bluesheep8 · 20/04/2020 12:08

thelovelinessofdemons

ARE they?? Seriously??Shock

expatinspain · 20/04/2020 12:08

EndersonsSmileyTattoo I usually do every two months, so was due at the end of March. End of Jan was the last time I went!! I think the worst thing is that when they reopen there will be a scrum to get an appt because everyone will be dying to get their hair done!

Jimdandy · 20/04/2020 12:09

@Bringringbring12 that’s what happened to me. I have mine cut and highlighted every 9 weeks and I was booked in for the Weds as lockdown happened on the Monday.

I now have grey roots coming through and my ends feel all crispy and dry!!

I won’t be doing a DIY job though!!
