Why is everyone suddenly attempting to be a hairdresser?

Suddenly everyone is desperate for a haircut (and people are hacking away at their own and their partners hair. What's going on? We've been in lockdown for weeks, not months. Everyone's losing the plot 😂

My step dad hacked at his with a dog grooming kit and looks like he had an arm spasm half way through and has hacked a massive uneven bit off.
My friend let her husband cut hers when they were both pissed and he's taken about 30cm off (funny at the time, but not the next morning) and I've seen various other hack jobs 🤣🤣

Me, I'm just going to wait until the professionals are available again like a sensible person 😂

I’m feeling rather smug, because I found two boxes of hair dye, while I was sorting out one of my Brexit cupboards. It will not be used until I can escape. Considering my youngest is vulnerable, I will either appear totally grey or with luscious chestnut locks at the end of this. I’m just tying it back, but will have to attempt the fringe at some stage.

SusieOwl4 · 20/04/2020 13:41

I tried to dye mine pink ( subtle) just because I can not normally go to work with pink hair .

but it did not really work its so pale you can hardly see it .

SlatternIsTrying · 20/04/2020 13:41

My hair appointment was at 9am on the first proper day of lockdown so was cancelled. My cut and colour was needed then so you can imagine what it looks like 4 weeks further down the line.

I can cope with the length but the roots, omg the roots!

@unlimiteddilutingjuice your post did make me laugh. I have always wondered about the Mumsnet haircut and how that would go. Your description pretty much sums up my concerns. Grin

FreakStar · 20/04/2020 13:43

It's only been 4 weeks since hairdressers closed, how long can everyone's hair have grown- its only had time to grow about a cm! ?

Ninkanink · 20/04/2020 13:45

My DH’s hair grows very quickly. Women who have short styles/pixies/bobs/etc will need cuts much more often to keep them sleek.

BeetrootRocks · 20/04/2020 13:48

I've got short hair that I get trimmed every 4 to 5 weeks.

I am working and video conferencing.

It is going grey and quite curly and unruly.

Can you really not work out why I've bought some clippers and building up the desire to use them!

Yes it will probably look shit. But it looks shit already.

Pleased to hear you find this humerous.

EthelMayFergus · 20/04/2020 13:50

Freakstar I'm guessing a lot of people (like me!) were considering making an appointment when lock down happened, so it already needed a cut over a month ago, and now it's desperate.

Dh has very thick black hair and he currently looks deranged. It's poker straight and some of it just seems to grow out and up. It is however quite beneficial in terms of social distancing when we take our daily walk.

Not everyone will have had their hair done just before lockdown! Mine was cut and coloured 2 weeks before so the cut is fine as I only have it cut every 3 or 4 months but I've already coloured it myself as hell will freeze over before I go grey!

WhatWouldYouDoWhatWouldJesusDo · 20/04/2020 13:53

I wish ds would let me near his thatch.

Days before lockdown I was looking at him thinking you need a snip. Then boom.

And as his hair grows upwards not down coupled with the fact he has a triple crown he wakes up looking like one of those rosette guinea pigs. It stays in that position all day and just springs back up after brushing.

SleepingIsOverrated · 20/04/2020 13:56

My husband had taken a lot off mine, using a comb and a pair of electric clippers. It's a long blunt bob and I actually love my hair again for the first time in ages Grin

zafferana · 20/04/2020 13:57

I attempted to cut DH's hair yesterday, but it's so long and thick that the clippers got completely snarled up! He then had a go at it himself and l managed to do the sides and that plus the bit I snarled up at the back make him look like he's got mange!

CatkinToadflax · 20/04/2020 13:59

I’ve ordered proper hair cutting scissors for DS2’s hair and clippers for DS1 and am hoping not to destroy their dignity! Grin DS1’s hair grows up and out rather than down. He currently resembles the top of a pineapple. DS2 needs to have sensible hair for school, but seeing as he’s not currently physically there....let’s just say that he last had a trim in January; his fringe is now well past his chin; and I shall try my best! Grin I’m fervently hoping that DH doesn’t join the queue too. The one and only time I’ve ever cut hair was my own somewhat unsuccessful home fringe when I was 14.

userabcname · 20/04/2020 14:00

Some of these posts have really made me laugh! I only go to the hairdresser about twice a year so it's not made any difference to me. In fact, I can safely say that having the laziest beauty regime in the world is finally paying off!

Ginfordinner · 20/04/2020 14:03

FreakStar You must have very slow growing straight hair cut in a single layer. I have thinning, greying wavy hair cut in a short, layered bob. My hair appointment was due just after lockdown, so I would say it has grown at least an inch and a half since it was last cut. Quite frankly, it looks an unruly mess.

I think people with long hair don’t realise how much upkeep a short layered haircut needs to look tidy.

@expatinspain DD is 19, and has made a really good job of it. I am delighted with the result. All I need now is a decent cut.

oakleaffy · 20/04/2020 14:10

Yes...Me too...I chopped 3cms off with blunt scissors.
I was due for a haircut anyway...but it doesn't look too bad as it wear it tied back anyway..the fringe is a bit...on the slosh.
A hairdressers pristine, surgically sharp scissors are not the same as a pair of old Wilkinson Sword scissors used for cutting cardboard &c..
there will be a huge backlog of appointments as well when lockdown is eventually released..

lilgreen · 20/04/2020 14:12

I go 8 weeks between appointments so mine was the first week of lockdown so I’m now 12 weeks since my hair was done. Obvious really!

Lovemusic33 · 20/04/2020 14:14

I have only been to a hair dresser 4 times in my life 🤣🤣, I don’t understand why people are so worried about their hair. If your a man then it’s pretty easy to use clippers to cut it, if your a woman it’s pretty easy to trim your split ends or dye your roots.

TheStarryNight · 20/04/2020 14:16

Usually trim my own fringe because my hairdresser is a long way away (we licecrurallt) so just go twice a year for a proper cut. So I’ll keep trimming my fringe.

Did DH’s hair last night with clippers he bought off the inter webs. Looked alright.

wowfudge · 20/04/2020 14:17

I have my hair cut every 5 to 6 weeks. My now cancelled appointment was for this coming Saturday. I have short, thick hair which grows quickly. I will have to trim the outline and possibly adopt a quiff to keep it some sort of order. Thank god I stopped colouring it a couple of years ago.

whatsthatnow74 · 20/04/2020 14:19

Both me and my very curly haired DD1 had haircuts booked in during the first week of lockdown. Mine is normally a short, pixie cut and needs trimming every 6 weeks to look decent. We’re now on week 11 I believe! DD gets hers cut every three months or so and goes to a specialist hairdresser in a different city. Hers is now well overdue, absolutely massive and bushy! I’m hoping that when hairdressers return, they offer appointments in order of who’s had to wait longest!

SweetPetrichor · 20/04/2020 14:20

I'm quite glad that I don't have to worry about haircuts along with everything else - I've been shaving my head for a year or so now so I'm used to doing it myself every 5-7 days. DP is the same...we're not experiencing anything different in the hair department! Grin

DinosApple · 20/04/2020 14:21

I ordered scissors a fortnight ago, they arrive in May. Then everyone apart from me gets the chop!

DH usually gets his cut maybe three or four times a year. When washed it's grey, fluffy and mad professor-ish...

Last week he combed it and it looked like a jimmy saville wig grey page boy bob, perfectly curled under.

My offers to cut it or man bun it were rejected in favour of.... A home hair cutting tool from the 1950s that belonged to his father! It's basically a comb with a razor blade on it...

He'd rather cut his own hair with a blunt antique than let me loose on it 😂. I can't wait to see how this will turn out!

Fortheloveofscience · 20/04/2020 14:30

I'm sporting a MN haircut, I was really pleased with the result.

I detest the hairdressers, hadn't been in 18 months. Normally it's not socially acceptable to cut your own hair but now since everyone's doing it I had a go - it looks far better than it did before!
