Why is everyone suddenly attempting to be a hairdresser?

Suddenly everyone is desperate for a haircut (and people are hacking away at their own and their partners hair. What's going on? We've been in lockdown for weeks, not months. Everyone's losing the plot 😂

My step dad hacked at his with a dog grooming kit and looks like he had an arm spasm half way through and has hacked a massive uneven bit off.
My friend let her husband cut hers when they were both pissed and he's taken about 30cm off (funny at the time, but not the next morning) and I've seen various other hack jobs 🤣🤣

Me, I'm just going to wait until the professionals are available again like a sensible person 😂

I have been wondering this too. Especially those that are brunette who think NOW is the perfect time to ruin their hair and go blonde??

Bargainhuntbore · 20/04/2020 12:13

I only cut mine once every 2 years so it doesn’t bother me not my 2 DD’s.

DH and DS are another story 😳

MashedPotatoBrainz · 20/04/2020 12:16

I always do my own MN haircut. But I put it in a high pony tail at the front then cut it at chin level. Leaves my hair long, with lots of gentle curls. I loves it.

Without a regular haircut my dh looks like a mad professor (see photo)

Fortunately, dh in his 60s has a full head of thick hair. Unfortunately he was too busy in the 3 weeks before lock down (works in a covid related area).

Fortunately I managed to buy clippers, scissors and thinning shears on line. Unfortunately I misread the instructions for the variable length on the clippers.

Fortunately there are numerous instructive haircutting videos online. Unfortunately they mostly feature hot young guys in thier early 30s (the victim) and talented, artistic, experienced, beautiful women (the perpetrators)

Fortunately dh still has both ears intact. Unfortunately I managed to 'snip' my own hand

Fortunately dh can work from home using the miracle of zoom meetings. Unfortunately he is the only person in the meeting wearing a hat.

Never mind the clap for carers, when this is all over I'll be in the street cheering for hairdressers and barbers Grin

Why is everyone suddenly attempting to be a hairdresser?
ritzbiscuits · 20/04/2020 12:22

No problem for me, but my DH and DS were due at the hairdressers two weeks ago. I've made a decent attempt at my husbands, son is not letting me near him for now!

Mrsfussypants1 · 20/04/2020 12:24

I can manage without a cut or fringe trim, my fringe I'd growing nicely, and my long bob is doing ok too so I can last until it's safe to go back to hairdressers or when they re open. But despite protests from my hairdresser I have reached for a box dye and fixed my white roots , have to say I'm quite pleased with the results for a first attempt. I have it coloured every 4/5 weeks and it is pure white if left alone, which ages me, unlike my mum who is blonde and has enviable natural white hair which suits her skin tone. I do feel much better for doing it, I'm still going to work and like to look presentable and i quite enjoyed my at home hair pamper day.Over the years I've tried every root spay, powder, mascara on the market and didn't like the way it felt.

Inthemuckheap · 20/04/2020 12:26

Because some of us are still working and need to look presentable?
I coloured and cut my own hair yesterday and always clip my OH's. It's not exactly rocket science to chop a couple of inches off long hair and get colour as part of normal supermarket delivery.

nocutsnobuttsnococonuts · 20/04/2020 12:27

My fringe needs trimming and so does dd1's but I'm trying to convince her to grow it out.... dh is my usual hair dye person anyway and he does a pretty good job.

What has surprised me is the amount of people who've dyed their children's hair with rainbow colours. Little ones too. I'm not talking chalks but actually bleaching and proper dye. Craziness!

NothingIsWrong · 20/04/2020 12:31

Mine is in need - I've done a box dye on it and taught myself how took plait the front bits and clip them out of my eyes. Looks better than it did before!

For me, it doesn't matter, I rarely have it cut anyway! My two teenage boys have haircuts every 6 weeks and are really uncomfortable with longer and un-tidy hair. Not an aesthetic thing but a comfort thing. They wanted their haircut and their dad did it for them! Don't see the problem if people are wanting it done 🤷🏻‍♀️

NaviSprite · 20/04/2020 12:41

I’ve been cutting my own hair for a couple of years now because it’s thick, grows like weeds in spring and I’m broke most of the time 😂 my MIL shaved her hair and dyed it blue last week ... she looks like sonic the hedgehog Grin she did it for fun though, she’s wanted to try a shaved head for ages but was worried about being judged, so what better time to give it a go when most folks won’t see her.

DuffRose · 20/04/2020 12:54

Just wanted to say re the Mumsnet haircut that the pony tail needs to be put at the top of your forehead like a unicorn, then only cut where you want your shortest layer, so for me I cut about half an inch past my chin, honestly it works no mullets involved.

UnderTheIroningBoard · 20/04/2020 12:56

I have straight and natural hair and don't particularly care about how long it is, but if it was dyed and needed upkeep, or I had a complex style, or just didn't like the length, I'd probably try it myself too.

Ninkanink · 20/04/2020 13:02

Yes I used to do a variation of the Mumsnet cut (many years ago, before MN was a thing). You can do the pony tail further back too, as I used to do. It worked well on my hair because it’s wavy and you don’t need the layers to be exactly right and equal. If your hair is poker straight I’m not sure it would work well unless you really know what you’re doing.

totallydevoidofideas · 20/04/2020 13:04

I love cutting people's hair so have really enjoyed cutting ds's hair recently and he said it was quite good so I'm thrilled with that. He's 24. I'm not a hairdresser btw, just an enthusiastic amateur who happens to have some good scissors! Usually no one let's me near them, understandably enough, so I'm going to enjoy myself where I can. DH won't let me yet, but there's still time.

leolion81 · 20/04/2020 13:09

I hate going to a salon as it's time consuming and expensive. I've never found sitting there for 3 hours a treat. So this seemed a good opportunity to have a go myself!

SimonJT · 20/04/2020 13:10

I usually have mine cut every four weeks, I have it fairly long on top and v short at the sides. I was due a haircut before lockdown, so it’s too long now. I’ve managed to keep the sides in good order with clippers and a tutorial from my barber, I’ve left the top, blow dried it’s just about still okay. I can get it into a little manbun, which is fun but looks awful.

My boyfriend has curly hair, I’ve sorted his sides so they’re short with a decent fade, but the top is in full on mop mode.

ItsACounty · 20/04/2020 13:14

I was already weeks overdue for my haircut and then lockdown happened. I’ve been snipping at my fringe and the sides around my face and I’ve always home coloured it. I don’t care, it’ll be fixed once lockdown is over.

Ginfordinner · 20/04/2020 13:18

The mumsnet haircut doesn't work with short, layered hair. I need a nice headscarf to cover up my tragic hair.

Macarena1990 · 20/04/2020 13:24

Fortunately I had my hair cut and coloured a week before lockdown so it should be ok for a few more weeks. I haven't blow dried it or straightened it for 4 weeks in an attempt to get it back in good condition but it looks a frizzy state without being styled. Luckily I have a really good wig which comes in handy for conference calls!

PhilSwagielka · 20/04/2020 13:27

I'm not even going to attempt cutting my hair. It's too thick and I'd make a balls up of it. I'd rather let it grow Chalet School style.

Kelsoooo · 20/04/2020 13:29

DH was already a week late for his cut when lockdown happened.

For a gauge of how quickly his hair grows:

First day of lockdown, shaved it. Went shorter than he meant to. Looked like Alpha from the Walking Dead.

A week later (yes days) I clippered the sides to fade it.

A further seven days, I did the same again.

Yesterday, the same again. The top is about two inches now.

.so we've gone full circle in three weeks. Full circle.

I was due in on Friday to my hairdresser. I won't be doing anything to mine, it'll just look like a root drag 😂😂😂

I dyed the kids, and I'm one of those "bleach and coloured" on my youngests. By the time the schools reopen I'll be able to cut it back to a Bob style and you'd never know.

PickAChew · 20/04/2020 13:33

I'm not touching the bulk of my hair but I'll probably trim the fringe in a few weeks. I often do that myself anyhow. That bit of my hair is quite curly so very forgiving.

AmaryllisNightAndDay · 20/04/2020 13:35

Suddenly everyone is desperate for a haircut (and people are hacking away at their own and their partners hair. What's going on? We've been in lockdown for weeks, not months.

Because many of us get our hair cut very few weeks not months. What a silly question!
