You have £1 million to spend on a house..

Which would you buy?

I would probably go for this one:

I like the arched front and huge backyard.

You can spend less than the £1 million but no more. Go, go, go...

This one, and hope to be able to rustle up some cash for redecorating:

GnomeDePlume · 03/04/2020 06:24

I would be tempted by this as a project house:

The garden seems to be trying to absorb it!

Verily1 · 03/04/2020 06:39

I don’t like the one in the op. I don’t like the look from the front, the lawn is bare, the kitchen is soulless, I don’t like roll top baths, the ceilings look low and I’d want much more for £1m!

Verily1 · 03/04/2020 06:46

This is a proper old style mansion house.

Or fir a modern house this:

Growingboys · 03/04/2020 06:52

Love your first one @verily. Second one not at all.

Great thread OP - I've clicked every link and thoroughly enjoyed myself!

Verily1 · 03/04/2020 06:53

The Carlisle one is quirky but I didn’t realise houses there are so £££! And it was built in the last decade? Good job of making it look old.

I despair that in London you only get a postage stamp sized garden for £1m!

I don’t like the Newcastle house- too much grey, which will date terribly.

Verily1 · 03/04/2020 07:06

The Norfolk house is like something from through the keyhole! I wonder who the artist is?

The Northamptonshire house looks like where I’d imagine Lizzie Bennet to live! Lovely, but the boiler next to the toilet???

lakeswinmer that is lovely- like something from grand designs!

I like the Somerset one- lots of windows.

But my favourite is the Herefordshire barn conversion. If I’m spending a million I want a pony and a stable for them.

Barkingfuckingdogs · 03/04/2020 07:21

You even get your own temple with this fabulously eccentric place.... www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/property-82928936.html

JMAngel1 · 03/04/2020 17:46

Omg, that temple is stunning, but the modern house part is just meh.

Kaypee28 · 03/04/2020 18:06

I would buy 4 250k houses.
1 for me
1 for my parents
1 for my grandparents
1 for my other granny 🥰

Deathraystare · 03/04/2020 18:06

£1 million, is that all?? I do live in London you know!!!! The one I want is 7 million!

Balhammom · 03/04/2020 18:12

I really need to leave London!

steppemum · 03/04/2020 18:19

well I have had fun clickig on the links.

But honestly? I wouldn't want to live in most of them.

I don't like huge empty rooms, and 3 different sofa areas etc.
They seem to fall into - really old /traditional/ugly or
modern grey soulless box

I must be hard to please!

Can I have just a fraction of the million and do up my own house, get a patio laid, new furniture, garden office?
Ta!

steppemum · 03/04/2020 19:10

I quite like that one newuser, at least inside, but the front is ugly and the garden bare, it needs trees, and you need enough money for a gardener.

Deathraystare · 04/04/2020 17:04

I don't like huge empty rooms, and 3 different sofa areas etc.

I daresay I would fill up an empty room , no problem!

When I see a huge expanse of built in book cases I know I would have no trouble filling them up!

Deathraystare · 04/04/2020 17:07

Balhammom

You see that is where we differ! I love the transport system. I might if money where no object, have a 2nd home somewhere else but would never move out of London. The green spaces including parks and squares, the history, architecture, even some of the people are lovely!!!

It has a lake!

I'm under budget this time!

ChainsawBear · 04/04/2020 17:30

That is a beautiful property bubblegum but astonishingly hideous indoors! What's with the cheap 80s MDF kitchen? You'd need a fair budget further for redecoration and refurb Grin

Balhammom · 04/04/2020 17:49

@Deathraystare

Actually, I agree with you, which is why I’m still in London.

It just blows my mind what many Londoners could afford elsewhere!

Wolfgirrl · 04/04/2020 18:26

Love the little bathroom in OP - could imagine a bubble bath on a cool summers evening, window down and a glass of bubbly!

Kitchen is horrific and so out of keeping with the rest of it, what were they thinking?!?!

I love gothic/georgian style houses but conversely like them to be light and airy on the inside, no mahogany walls or dark staircases etc. Love slightly wild looking gardens with lots of flowers etc, not a fan of manicured lawns and fountains. Not too huge, but 4/5 bedrooms would be nice Grin would also love an aga, claw foot bath tub and a guesthouse! Somewhere rural and away from it all.

Reality is looking more like a 3 bed new build Confused sigh

GnomeDePlume · 04/04/2020 20:53

I always find it tricky to find something I truly like. Rural isolation is all very well but I worry that I won't be able to get a pizza delivered or that there will be no GP practice in the area.

CheriLittlebottom · 04/04/2020 21:15

Tech, gnome, don't go being all practical and realistic on us!

I'm blowing the budget. Grin Turns out that imaginary lottery win was a euromillions ticket and I'm feeling flash!

Though if you are going to insist I stick to the original limit, I'm off to France....
