are you doing the round of applause for the NHS workers?

We had a note through our door about this (good way to spread germs....) asking us to join in with a hand clap for NHS workers. Apparently we are supposed to stand on our door step at a set time and do a round of applause for them. At least 4 of my close neighbours will be getting children to sleep so I won't be doing it but will you?

When will that be ? I haven't received anything.

DifficultPifcultLemonDifficult · 25/03/2020 19:02

I've seen it shared on facebook, people are trying to make it catch on and I've seen about 4 or 5 different days/times mentioned over the last week or so.

It's a bit pointless imo, there are many ways to directly show your appreciation rather than a few random people clapping in various streets at various times 🤷‍♀️

FlibbertyGiblets · 25/03/2020 19:03

No.

flossyflorenceflounces · 25/03/2020 19:03

It's one night this week I think, I just picked it up with some other junk mail and chucked it straight in the recycling bin - we're trying to minimise what comes past the porch into the house.

I'm in Belgium and we do this every night of the week at 8pm many other countries doing the same thing to show support for healthstaff and key workers - there's a good turnout.

MegaClutterSlut · 25/03/2020 19:09

I think its tomorrow at 8pm from what I've seen on fb

Makeitgoaway · 25/03/2020 19:11

No, who would see?

TrojanWhore · 25/03/2020 19:12

Someone sweet and naive gave it the unfortunate name of "Clap For Carers"

Mummymummymummmeeeee · 25/03/2020 19:12

I've heard of it happening in Spain, and my first thought too was what about parents who've just managed to get their baby off to sleep!

flossyflorenceflounces · 25/03/2020 19:16

I'll admit I typed 'clap for NHS workers' at first and then changed it Blush

That sounds utterly ridiculous, sorry. If you want to support them, pay that 'just giving' coffee donation, not this nonsense. The NHS workers won't see this, it's just attention-seeking like the ribbons on car bonnets. Donate, that actually will make a difference for them.

I saw that supermarket thing in Llansamlet where they were being applauded. They looked highly embarrassed. Cameras trained on them when they wanted to just get in and shop. I don't know why we do these things? It comes from a place of kindness but it's so misguided and mawkish.

buttcrackmcheese · 25/03/2020 19:20

No we won't be, my partner works for the NHS and thinks it's really cringe.

fluffdeloop · 25/03/2020 19:21

its 8pm tomorrow and it's been mentioned on news and radio channels I've been listening to for the last few days too.

ThatLibraryMiss · 25/03/2020 19:21

This was on our local network. It doesn't seem to be clear whether it's clapforourcarers or clapforourcares. Whichever, I'll be on the sofa with the blinds drawn.

MrsTerryPratchett · 25/03/2020 19:22

Turn up at the polls and don't vote Tory would be more successful.

Elouera · 25/03/2020 19:22

I'd prefer the right amount and type of masks and equipment than people clapping!

bluebluezoo · 25/03/2020 19:22

I’m 3 miles from the nearest hospital, whoMs going to hear?

Waste of time and effort virtue signalling.

And yes i did snigger at “clap for nhs workers”. Last thing the need is another rampant infection Grin

BecauseReasons · 25/03/2020 19:23

No, pointless noise pollution- our local variation is playing a random song. Very popular on my local page, which doesn't surprise me- they're the sort of people that think sharing it liking a page will please the dog that's just beaten cancer.

If they want to help the NHS, why not join the volunteers?

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 25/03/2020 19:25

Oh my. Using the NHS logo for that. How truly pathetic! FB should be knocked offline.

Do something practical to show support. Not stand at open doors when we're supposed to be indoors, clapping like so many mindless seals.

CodenameVillanelle · 25/03/2020 19:27

Utter cringey bollocks
There was one going round recently suggesting we should put a candle in our windows to beat coronavirus or something. Great plan - let's start a few house fires and keep the emergency services busy Hmm

MrsTerryPratchett · 25/03/2020 19:31

Great plan - let's start a few house fires and keep the emergency services busy

Exactly what I thought. I bet there were fire fighters just face-palming at that.

CroissantsAtDawn · 25/03/2020 19:33

Its done here in France at 8pm.

It's to show thanks and actually, having been in lockdown over a week now it's nice to see neighbours at their windows and feel joined to something.

It doesn't stop us donating in other ways.

And every night on the news they show a street doing it and its really nice (tonight was in Marseille)

Gizmo79 · 25/03/2020 19:36

As a frontline nurse, doesn’t bother me either way. I don’t want to draw attention to what I do, as I have heard too much nasty stuff about emergency personnel being spat at and so on. I’m actually embarrassed about how we as a nation are behaving currently with people still being unable to grasp that we are entering unknown territory
.

Neuwanda · 25/03/2020 19:39

I live in Paris and we do this every night at 8pm. I really like it.

We are stuck in our small apartments all day and it gives us a moment of connection and solidarity with our neighbors whom we otherwise don't see.

We bring our kids out to the balcony with us to clap just before we put them to bed. I think its positive for the morale of both the healthcare workers, and of the general population who support them.

BecauseReasons · 25/03/2020 19:39

And apparently NHS staff are being mugged for their ID so that people can use it at supermarkets to get preferential treatment.

I bet some of those muggers will be out applauding. It's virtue signalling on a massive scale.
