are you doing the round of applause for the NHS workers?

We had a note through our door about this (good way to spread germs....) asking us to join in with a hand clap for NHS workers. Apparently we are supposed to stand on our door step at a set time and do a round of applause for them. At least 4 of my close neighbours will be getting children to sleep so I won't be doing it but will you?

People do it every night here in Spain, I think it started in Spain. Or maybe France. Anyway, it makes people feel more connected, we can't even go for a walk, so it can be nice to see others and feel connected.
After 4000 deaths people are scared.

If you don't like it, don't participate.

cyclingmad · 26/03/2020 23:36

Don't need to clap to show humanity. Far better to treat stagg right when you need them than stand in a street clapping only to then scream in their faces like some people do.

It's hardly being miserable, I think its just a load of bollocks abs virtue signalling. These same people were most likely panic buying too.

DakotaFanny · 26/03/2020 23:47

We did it. We loved it. We would do it every night if it was on.

It was so nice to SEE people we care about.

I really hope that it is a small way to show how grateful we are.

PutColinInTheCorner · 26/03/2020 23:57

A show of humanity is EXACTLY what's needed at this terrible time.

Oh I agree with that, but just because someone said 'clap' doesn't mean we all choose to show our humanity in that way.

GADday do it!
I had mixed feelings about this (I'm quite the cynic) but thought I'd stick my head out the door at 8pm, not expecting to see or hear anyone. There was lots of clapping and whooping and I could see some of my neighbours. I found it surprisingly uplifting and my cold heart was warmed

This is from a hospital consultant on Twitter: the clapping last night was genuinely lovely. I don’t need a round of applause to do my job, but it’s so nice to hear the appreciation people genuinely have for everyone out there working to help just now. Let’s just take positivity where we can get it, unquestioned, just now 💜:

A poster up the thread suggested this; I think it's a brilliant idea and I'm doing it. I'll do it as often as I'm able.

I wanted to pop back onto the thread to say that I've change my view a bit of the clapping as it does seem to bring communities together and that can only be a good thing. I think my view was heavily tainted with FB nonsense and jaded from the absolutely venomous responses to posters asking questions about lockdown.

Anyway, I'm glad that it's achieved what it intended and make frontline staff feel appreciated. That really is beyond price. I also hope that those who unnecessarily stock-piled masks and other PPE will donate those to the hospitals now, if they really do mean to show appreciation.

I didn't and I've been thinking today about why , promoted by the drive to do it every Thursday and my social media going nuts with posts praising each other and local roads for cheering. No one did directly local to me.

I'd be happy to join in a community show of support and celebration of everyone who has to put themselves out there for the pandemic. I just find the sacred cow NHS stuff a bit weird particularly as lots of my experiences with it have been quite negative or depressing. I sort of resent the 'all nurses are angels!' rhetoric. Some parts of the NHS won't be particularly in danger or overworked due to this and some will be immensely overwhelmed. Same for police, paramedics, care workers, supermarket workers, on call trades etc. All at differing degrees. So if the focus was on the generosity of others fighting to keep us all safe I'd probably be more comfortable celebrating.

rosegoldwatcher · 27/03/2020 19:31

Well I wasn't going to (convinced by those NHS workers on here who would rather that we didn't) but as it happens the entire end of our cul-de-sac was out in force. DH played his trombone even.
We had checked that Doctor-next-door was on nights so her sleep would not be disturbed.
Opposite neighbours' daughter is a front line nurse; the were out too. The mum got a little emotional.
It was uplifting.

JosephineKarlsson · 27/03/2020 20:36

Oh dear god why? You were asked to clap, that's all. And why are people causing distress to pets by letting off fucking fireworks?

rosegoldwatcher · 27/03/2020 20:41

@JosephineKarlsson - no animals were harmed. (But I will hide it next Thursday.)
