are you doing the round of applause for the NHS workers?

We had a note through our door about this (good way to spread germs....) asking us to join in with a hand clap for NHS workers. Apparently we are supposed to stand on our door step at a set time and do a round of applause for them. At least 4 of my close neighbours will be getting children to sleep so I won't be doing it but will you?

NHS worker here, I thought it would be a bit naff, but after such a stressful day at work today, when things started to feel very real and scary, this show of support with the clapping and cheering has let me have a much needed little cry, tomorrow is another day, bring it on :)

DontBe · 26/03/2020 20:59

You know what, as a nurse you don’t get to tell me how to feel about it.

EricaNernie · 26/03/2020 21:00

It was great, saucepan lids being banged, one banger, we generally are very British but we managed and it felt great, inspiring, uplifting

bananaramadramas · 26/03/2020 21:01

It was really emotional. So nice seeing our community come together.

I live in central London. The Shard and London Eye are lit up blue.

It really wasn't at all naff of cringy and so many took part.

BrandoraPaithwaite · 26/03/2020 21:14

I wondered if it would be cringe but it was lovely. Our house is high up on the edge of the town and we could hear the whole town clapping, whistling and cheering too.
Also went out the back afterwards to clap again with the next door neighbour who was clapping on her own in her back yard 😅

Smellbellina · 26/03/2020 21:24

@rosegoldwatcher thanks for the heads up on the quiz, we had lots of fun Grin

With family who are front line workers, who are about to treat critical patients and genuinely worried for their safety due to lack of PPE, I (and they) did not join in. It’s a very well meaning gesture but superficial, NHS staff need PPE, tests (and better pay) they are literally risking their lives right now, many medics have already died globally from this and more will. I can’t clap I’m too worried, and so are my family members going to work with critical nhs patients.

CorinnaSinner · 26/03/2020 21:25

Try it tomorrow!

It’s not happening tomorrow.

Smellbellina · 26/03/2020 21:26

And the DC were pleased to join in the clap too

Smellbellina · 26/03/2020 21:27

And I think that’s the point, it’s not really all about the NHS workers

Aragog · 26/03/2020 21:29

@HavenDilemma - I think you have tagged the wrong person Shock

Not my words at all.

Aragog · 26/03/2020 21:32

@havendilemma

I am not that poster.
I spoke about MIL phoning FIL in hospital so that he and the nursing staff could hear the clapping (FIL has recently been told his cancer in terminal but now isn't allowed visitors) on his ward.
I'm not a poster calling others names.

Please check next time.

TroysMammy · 26/03/2020 21:36

Froq I pay into the NHS pension so I don't understand why we don't count. Who do you think are answering telephone calls and ordering prescriptions and keeping things going? General Practice is after all called Primary Care.
Thank you for making me feel shit after an 11 hour shift dealing with patients.

GirlsInGreen · 26/03/2020 21:42

Medics I know are eyerolly too. Would rather we email Matt Hancock and demand to know where the PP is.
Ah well - no virtue left unsignalled these days...

Sewrainbow · 26/03/2020 22:13

This was a actually really lovely, I wasn't going to do it and only looked out our skylight when i heard the noise. There was loads of noise in our rural village, fireworks car horns etc. It did feel as though people cared and were being supportive. Especially my near neighbours who I know work for nhs and they know I do.

The other suggestions on this thread are all very well but noone is really going to be welcoming tax rises, food and drink gifts are already being donated and whilst it's nice to think you'll thank nhs staff wholeheartedly next time you use a service, when this has moved on and people are in a new position worrying about their health or their families they wont be thinking about how hard we worked during the coronavirus pandemic.

TotorosFurryBehind · 26/03/2020 22:15

No...I showed my support for the NHS by voting Labour at the last election, as many healthcare professionals urged us to do at the time.

If you voted Tory then a bit of clapping is a hollow gesture. NHS workers need better pay and working conditions, not clapping

Careful here - the last thread to suggest this was deleted!

Mothership4two · 26/03/2020 22:20

Lots did it around us. You could hear clapping and cheering going off in all directions. I felt quite emotional

redeyetonowheregood · 26/03/2020 22:32

I am an NHS worker and proud to be so, but I am just doing my job, which I love, and need no extra thanks. I would however really like to thank the shop workers who are going such a great job. The staff have looked really harassed in my Waitrose these last couple of weeks and have had all kinds of abuse. They need our praise more I think.

BecauseReasons · 26/03/2020 23:08

I was asleep. Obviously wasn't too loud round here.

BasiliskStare · 26/03/2020 23:18

I clapped - it was just to say thank you . I do not know what else I can do but it was a way of saying Thank You .

cyclingmad · 26/03/2020 23:18

Instead of clapping perhaps yhose who bought some stupid amount of masks and gloves etc could actually donate some to their local nhs worker instead.

PutColinInTheCorner · 26/03/2020 23:24

I didn't do it, I don't know any NHS colleagues who femur t particularly comfortable about it tbh and I just don't see the point of it. Instead I made a donation to our local hospital at 8pm.

PutColinInTheCorner · 26/03/2020 23:26

....I don't know any NHS colleagues who FELT particularly...That should say

GADDay · 26/03/2020 23:31

Crikey there are some miserable people on this thread.

A show of humanity is EXACTLY what's needed at this terrible time.

I may just start clapping in Australia.
