are you doing the round of applause for the NHS workers?

We had a note through our door about this (good way to spread germs....) asking us to join in with a hand clap for NHS workers. Apparently we are supposed to stand on our door step at a set time and do a round of applause for them. At least 4 of my close neighbours will be getting children to sleep so I won't be doing it but will you?

I expect though, Gizmo79 you'd appreciate quiet and anonymous donations to coffees and refreshment for if and when you get a break? Thank you for your service, you and all emergency service collegaues. Brew

bluebluezoo · 25/03/2020 19:41

And apparently NHS staff are being mugged for their ID so that people can use it at supermarkets to get preferential treatment

Nope. Met police put a statement out to say they’d had no such reports. More facebook copy and paste bullshit that people are sharing without a source.

Just seen on that claims half of all
Italy’s dr’s and nurses are dead, children are being left at home with dead parents, and people are being told to stay home and die.

Shared as if it’s fact because it comes from a “dr in milan” Hmm

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 25/03/2020 19:42

It is, BecauseReasons, I don't' know, perhaps some people just crave attention and adulation and hate to see others getting it?

They're the sort of people that would big themselves up too... and post prolifically about how well they're doing x, y, z and how badly everybody else is doing.

That is terrifying that IDs are being stolen, it has many more connotations than preferential supermarket access. Shock

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 25/03/2020 19:44

That's a relief, bluebluezoo.

rosegoldwatcher · 25/03/2020 19:44

Sh! Don't announce this too loudly or we will have someone claiming that a round of applause triggers their deep seated fear of transwomen or some such (ref to rainbows in windows thread...)
Yes we will - just before the national online Pub Quiz.

LuluJakey1 · 25/03/2020 19:45

There are 6 houses on our street and we would not see each other's front doors. No one would hear us as it opens onto a park.

bumblingbovine49 · 25/03/2020 19:48

This is such a British reactionGrin
They have been doing this in France Italy and Spain that I know of . In Italy they are also singing from their balconies in the evenings. It is a way of staying connected and feeling part of a community

I told DH Noone would.do either here as we are too cynical. I am find that a bit sad though

TheWordmeister · 25/03/2020 19:50

Er no.

I did wave at the binmen today though.

BecauseReasons · 25/03/2020 19:52

It was in the Guardian...

www.google.com/amp/s/amp.theguardian.com/world/2020/mar/25/nhs-staff-warned-to-hide-id-after-spate-of-targeted-muggings

I do tend to trust them to do their due diligence. Should I have checked further before posting?

MumofTinies · 25/03/2020 19:54

No, it strikes me as a little cringe. Imagine opening your door and clapping your heart out, only to find no one else is partaking or has a clue what the fuck you are on about Blush

Health care professionals are always on my mind at the minute, if I am ever in the unfortunate position to need thier help in the next few weeks I'll be sure to thank them in person (if I am physically capable of doing so of course)

madcatladyforever · 25/03/2020 19:55

I#m the only NHS worker in my row of houses. I'd die of embarrassment, it just isn't British Grin

Gizmo79 · 25/03/2020 19:56

We have had some lovely donations from local food places, really appreciated. I not work in ITU but did trundle up with a tin of choccies as I can’t imagine their pressures. It’s the little things that matter hand cream is a huge issue at the moment as we have had so many staff getting open sores from the mix of constant hand washing and then alco-gel.
Oh and if someone can donate a load of PPE then that would be appreciated!

Gizmo79 · 25/03/2020 19:56

I don’t not I not.....

Gizmo79 · 25/03/2020 19:59

Also regarding ID. Staff are currently being advised to not have it on display. Please call out those that are. I had an interesting discussion with someone who had a trust lanyard (also not advised due to infection control) but was not an NHS worker....

Destinysdaughter · 25/03/2020 20:00

National online pub quiz??

NewYearNewJob123 · 25/03/2020 20:01

I'm an NHS nurse. I've been WFH for a week, as has the rest of my large service. We're obviously going to go if called to work on wards but its not happening yet.

My colleagues in my local super hospital are all fine, prepared for the worst if it happens but currently just enjoying a v.quiet hospital with more staff than usual due to training being cancelled etc and liking getting free drinks/food etc.

This current hero worship for all nurses has me a bit bemused to be honest.

SnakePlant · 25/03/2020 20:02

Well I would but all the flats on the opposite side of my road are empty prior to demolition and there are only 8 occupied flats on my side. None of us are NHS staff and there’s no passing traffic of an evening so it would be pretty pointless. But I think it’s a lovely idea.

CakeAndGin · 25/03/2020 20:08

Sorry, it’s just this month’s #BeKind.

If you want to be supportive of NHS workers:
-don’t go to the shops during their allocated times
-don’t lie about symptoms to see a doctor
-don’t call 111 or go to A&E unless necessary
-don’t abuse the staff that have had to cancel your routine appointments or the staff that won’t allow you to make a new appointment
-stay home
-don’t be a dick - but that final one should be extended to all key workers - bin men, posties, police and fire, carers, teachers, social workers, farmers, delivery drivers, utility workers. As it’s such an exhaustive list - maybe just don’t be a dick. To anyone. Maybe we should start small and everyone just practice not being a dick at 8pm everyday, maybe in a few months we can build it up to an hour, then a few hours.

By the way - that isn’t aimed at you OP, more the fact that this virus has generally brought out the worst in people.

JoshLymanIsHotterThanSam · 25/03/2020 20:30

@bluebluezoo our trust have warned us not to display our badges when off site-I believe there is some truth in the claim actually.

rosegoldwatcher · 25/03/2020 20:31

@Destinysdaughter - Virtual pub Quiz - should you be interested - www.facebook.com/events/649536262488918/

Purplewithred · 25/03/2020 20:38

Dh (NHS) said a clap would be nice but would a blow job be out of the question as an alternative? Hmm

CherryPlum · 25/03/2020 20:48

Can you imagine being a knackered NHS worker catching up on some much-needed sleep after a long shift, when you get woken up by the frantic clapping of your neighbours 😯

flossyflorenceflounces · 25/03/2020 20:51

By the way - that isn’t aimed at you OP, more the fact that this virus has generally brought out the worst in people.

Thanks for clarification, I guessed you didn't mean me.

@Purplewithred I'll leave you to take care of that request....Grin

@cakeandgin I couldn't agree with you more. I'm an NHS doctor and would appreciate much more if people followed your advice than some random round of applause one evening.

cheninblanc · 25/03/2020 20:54

No, I work for the nhs and will avoid it. I just want to quietly come home to my family
