are you doing the round of applause for the NHS workers?

We had a note through our door about this (good way to spread germs....) asking us to join in with a hand clap for NHS workers. Apparently we are supposed to stand on our door step at a set time and do a round of applause for them. At least 4 of my close neighbours will be getting children to sleep so I won't be doing it but will you?

No.

Standrewsschool · 26/03/2020 15:13

I don’t really know what it would achieve. If the nhs workers were parading down your street at 8pm, then fair enough. But to stand on your doorstep and randomly clap, seems a bit pointless.

SunshineDays2019 · 26/03/2020 15:13

I work for the NHS, I know it's well meaning but it's a bit daft really.

This made me laugh (and I agree fully).

I think when I've seen it in other countries it's been in urban areas, lots of apartments & close to a hospital(s). So I guess it could work in parts of the UK (& Ireland where it's also planned) but generally the population density & style of living will make it look a bit daft, I think.

AvonBarksdale99 · 26/03/2020 15:35

I’ve spoken to a nurse who thinks it’s a bit silly and a waste of time. Fine if you want to do it but it’s not anything actually practical

MasakaBuzz · 26/03/2020 15:37

No, I think it’s silly, when I went for my blood test this morning, I dropped off spare soap, latex gloves, tea bags and milk for the district nurses. That was my support.

Genopy · 26/03/2020 15:43

Nope.

Nichelette · 26/03/2020 19:18

I'm an introvert and live in a small cul de sac. The idea actually fills me with horror. I have lots of appreciation and actually really regret not going into medicine myself, but I'll probably look like an arsehole to my neighbours when I stay inside.

TheHumansAreDefinitelyDead · 26/03/2020 19:21

I am going to have to, as all my neighbours are nhs workers Grin

Wilmalovescake · 26/03/2020 19:24

I live in the middle of nowhere, I’d just send all the pheasants flapping if I went outside and started clapping!

MuseumOfYou · 26/03/2020 19:26

Yes, exactly the same, there isn't another house for half a mile so would feel a bit daft. It's a nice thought though and I am sure it would work in some places.

Chiyo666 · 26/03/2020 19:27

It’s a bit sad wanky and American isn’t it.

ScouseMar · 26/03/2020 19:29

DP has just told me off for saying this is virtue signalling crap so people can post about it on Social Media and feel good about themselves.

He says I have a heart of stone Grin

vinoandbrie · 26/03/2020 19:31

Of course I am! 😍😊

Mothership4two · 26/03/2020 19:32

Gosh this is a very English/British thread. It's just not British is it? The Italians are doing it every night.

Yes I am, but live in a town with NHS staff neighbours. It may be seen as daft, but it's not hurting anyone and someone may appreciate a pat on the back. DH coming too. DS doubtful, but then our mission in life is to embarrass them apparently Grin

EarringsandLipstick · 26/03/2020 19:34

You're not going out to do it Mother are you?

DH coming too.

stopandListen · 26/03/2020 19:34

@ScouseMar I've also a heart of stone then! I live in a quiet street in the suburbs all it would do is send the dog barking like mad and I'd feel a bit of a twat as nobody would hear anyway

flossyflorenceflounces · 26/03/2020 19:37

I wasn't planning to do it but part of me wants to see which ones of my neighbours do it and which don't.

It was on the local news tonight: "More about the clap for the NHS" ..somehow I think they know plenty about the clap.

How on earth does this help the overworked NHS staff?
The very best thing we can do for them is to STAY INSIDE apart from a short exercise break outside

HollySideEyes · 26/03/2020 19:41

I'm volunteering with the NHS, my neighbours have had numerous unadvised gatherings over the last few days and done sweetFA else .Guess which one of us will be clapping like a performing seal tonight?

BuckingFrolics · 26/03/2020 19:42

nichelette you me too. It makes my toes literally curl in horror. But huzzah hooray and much love to all medical and social care professionals. I've shown my appreciation over the years by not voting Tory or Leave. All the Tory voting Brexit voting folks will be hanging out their windows clapping at 8 without the remotest sense of shame.

Bagelsandbrie · 26/03/2020 19:42

Nope. Live rurally and no one would hear it anyways! Can imagine it would be good in London or built up areas.

ilovecakeandwine · 26/03/2020 19:45

Was thinking the same thing , Grin

LunaLula83 · 26/03/2020 19:46

Of course, to show my support and boost morale!

Kuponut · 26/03/2020 19:47

Nope.

I’ll do it when they clap for the NHS staff AND the teachers AND the care staff AND the posties AND the couriers AND the shop staff etc who are ALL putting their arses on the line in the middle of all of this disaster.

It’s virtue signalling wank - being put all over FB by the same who were doing the be kind and polish women’s crowns the other week, then baying for blood of someone they saw out walking their dog and have decided must have walked their dog incorrectly since the lockdown, and now this is the latest one.
