How old were you when you lost your last grandparent?

I have no grandparents left, my last died when I was 27. Yet I know someone who is almost 30 and has all of her grandparents still living. Can't help but feel a little jealous.

I am 44 and have a Grandmother and a step-grandmother still.

mathanxiety · 09/03/2020 18:47

13 or 14.
One of my grandfathers died 24 years before I was born. He never knew most of his grandchildren.

  1. Both grandmother's were gone before I was born. And both grandfather's died within 11 months of each other.
fairyfingers · 09/03/2020 18:58

Only ever had 3 (dm was bought up by a single mum)

Paternal GM died when I was 16
Maternal GM died when I was 23
Paternal Gf died when I was 31 - saw me married but no kids yet. My cousin had her boys though so he got to be a great grandad.

My kids are pre teens and they have already lost one (my df last year). My fil isn't in the best of health and almost 80 so may lose another in the next few years.

I had my kids 10 years later than my mum and dh was 15 years older than his dad was when he was born when he had dds. Less time with grandparents sadly to be expected.

Just turned 19 when last GP died and both parents gone by 41. Jealous of people who have GPs into adulthood and still have their parents into old age themselves.

RosehipRuthie · 09/03/2020 21:37

I was 38 (with two children) when I lost my lovely last one; 28 the one before and 13 the first. Other grandad died four years before I was born.

Hadenoughofitall441 · 09/03/2020 22:54

I lost my grandad when I was 17 and lost my Nan in 2018. I still have one Nan and grandad left but we are not really close.

Hadenoughofitall441 · 09/03/2020 22:55

I’m 31 now 😊

JoshArcherStoleMyTractor · 09/03/2020 23:01

I'm 35 and still have two although one is technically a step grandmother, she was married to my grandfather long before I was born and we're very close.

JoshArcherStoleMyTractor · 09/03/2020 23:04

Paternal grandfather died when I was 2, paternal grandmother when I was 14, maternal grandmother when I was 31. Maternal grandfather still going strong at ninety and (step) grandmother in her eighties. I do think as people leave having children later, having active/well grandparents in adulthood will become rarer.

  1. I was scared of my father's mother and wasn't really very impacted when she died. His father walked out on the family when he was 8.

My mother's parents died years before I was born - grandfather from pneumonia when she was 17 and grandmother in a house fire just 3 months after she married my father.

TheAdhesiveDuckDeficiency · 10/03/2020 01:22

I was very, very lucky and had all four until I was 25. I’m now 34 and still have both grandmothers, although one of them has very advanced Alzheimer’s.

I found it so amazing that when my cousin’s eldest daughter was born 10 years ago that she had all her great-grandparents still living (as well as her grandparents). As a kid I didn’t know anyone whose great-grandparents were alive when they were born so for her to have all 8 was amazing thing.

blancheduboiss · 10/03/2020 03:06

17, sadly. On the other hand, both my dad’s parents are still alive, however they’ve never bothered with me and I most definitely don’t class them as grandparents. Such a shame they weren’t as wonderful as the other two ...

Fantail · 10/03/2020 03:37

I’m 41. My paternal grandmother’s still alive, she turned 100 last year.

Dogsaresomucheasier · 10/03/2020 06:15

Mine had all gone before I was born.

So I know how you feel!

Gwilt160981 · 10/03/2020 06:18
  1. Nan was 97.
GeraltOfRivia · 10/03/2020 06:36

I'm 38 and have one Nanna who is 92 still alive. But I never met 2 of my grandparents, and my Grandpa died when I was 12

RuffleCrow · 10/03/2020 06:38
WBWIFE · 10/03/2020 06:44

23 and I miss her terribly

middleager · 10/03/2020 06:48
  1. She lived to 99 and I'm lucky she knew my children and vice versa.

She was the only grandparent I ever knew though. My grandfathers both died young, before I was born and my other grandmother when I was 1.

Natsku · 10/03/2020 06:51

Almost 24 - her funeral was on my birthday

Spidey66 · 10/03/2020 06:53

About 40 when my grandad died. He was 93.

My mum (his daughter, and my last remaining parent) died only 4 years later.

EugenesAxe · 10/03/2020 06:54

Age 42 - my grandma lived to 95. My granddad died when I was 38. I was very lucky; they were well for most of their lives with only a very quick decline before they died.
