How old were you when you lost your last grandparent?

I have no grandparents left, my last died when I was 27. Yet I know someone who is almost 30 and has all of her grandparents still living. Can't help but feel a little jealous.

I lost two before I was born and my final one when I was 19.

I wish I had had an adult relationship with them.

Sakura7 · 08/03/2020 18:56

@Hotpinkangel19 Sorry for your losses. I'm the same age as you and will soon be in your situation; my mother has terminal cancer and my dad has advanced dementia. It's a very lonely feeling losing that connection, and none of my friends can relate.

hopefulhalf · 08/03/2020 18:56

36 seems about average. She was 93.

DieCryHate · 08/03/2020 18:58

I'm 33 and I have one of four left.

beewales · 08/03/2020 18:59

I still have one grandmother at 35. One died 10 years before I was born, one when I was 6 and one when I was 28.

Bunnybigears · 08/03/2020 18:59

35, 1 Grandad died before I was born, 1 died when I was about 6 or 7. 1 Grandma died when I was about 21 the last one when I was 35 although never really had a proper adult relationship with either as with suffered from dementia for years before they died.

I was 15 when I lost my last grandparent. My Dads mom and I genuinely miss not having grandparents.

I get that pang of jealousy mixed with confusion and grief every time I'm reminded I'm surrounded by adults who still have parents when I lost mine within about the first five minutes of adulthood. I can't even imagine what it would have been like to have had the chance to go through my adult life with parents. Bastard universe.

I think jealousy is a natural emotion to have though. I don't like hierarchies of suffering being imposed on people to shut them up or shame them.

newbingepisodes · 08/03/2020 19:15

I was 19 when my last one died. I'm now 32
One died before I was born (he was very young)
One died when I was 3 (don't remember him)
One died when I was 16
Last one died when I was 19

Jessicabrassica · 08/03/2020 19:18

Last grandparent lost at 25. By the time dc2 was 3mo I was the last functioning member of my family and caring for a parent with dementia. I have to work really hard not to resent friends who have parents, siblings, grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins...

GhostsToMonsoon · 08/03/2020 19:20

My grandparents died when I was 2, 18, 23 and 24.

IndieTara · 08/03/2020 19:24

I'm 53 and have 1 grandad left :-))

stanski · 08/03/2020 20:13
  1. Last one (I only ever knew 2) died in December. I like to think she escaped from all the pain she had been in for years, but nevertheless miss her tons
elp30 · 08/03/2020 20:27

I had lost all my grandparents and my mother by the time I turned 11 and my father when I was 40.

My husband lost his last grandparent when he was 40 and both his parents are still around. We are the same age so I'm a bit jealous but grateful they're still here.

Holymolymackerel · 08/03/2020 21:19

I lost my dgs when I was minus 5, 18, 20 and 30.
Also lost my df at 30

Dh lost his at minus 4, 12, 22, 31

LucyFox · 08/03/2020 21:21

27 - my friend was 48 when they lost their last grandparent & I know others who were much younger when they lost theirs... but then grandparents could be 60 when you are born so it’s huge variations

painintheholeSIL · 08/03/2020 21:23

My maternal grandmother died long before I was born when my mum was a junior school aged child, and she was early thirties.
My maternal grandfather died when I was in my early twenties. He was in his eighties.
My maternal step-grandma is still with us, and I’m very lucky. I love her dearly.
My paternal grandfather died when my dad was in his late teens before I was born.
My paternal grandmother died when I was 9.
My dads bio mum and her husband are both still with us, having found out about my dad and written letters fifteen years ago.
No one knows who or where dads bio dad is so I’ve not a clue if Alive or dead.
