@Borntobeamum - Can you enlarge the details of the plane and it's reg no? You can sometimes find out who owns the plane via that no. and then work out what it's been doing!

Triglesoffy · 09/05/2020 13:22

Ah, thanks - yes, it landed at Aberdeen and then a bristow helicopter took off shortly afterwards and is currently headed out to see. Oh dear, sounds like someone has been taken ill on an oil rig.

MulticolourMophead · 09/05/2020 13:24

avroroad Guessed it was a normal aircraft, just amused at the labelling and icon.

notimagain · 09/05/2020 14:01

Any ideas why this would happen?!

Lots of 360 degree turns like that would make me think it's either somebody indulging in a bit of sightseeing or somebody is having a flying lesson (being taught turning..)

It's very likely unconnected. The choppers are in and out of ABZ result to the rigs. Very normal.

@MulticolourMophead

Sorry I was replying about the aircraft that the image was posted of just before - it was doing lots of little orbits.

Two Falcons? doing formations togetherover the North Sea out of Durham Tees Valley

pinkrocker · 11/05/2020 11:59

There's a USAF "Stratotanker" above me right now, but can't hear it at all!

This keeps coming up- we need FAQs here -

Cobham Aviation..Amongst other things they provide targets for military training..

I think I've seen one of their planes before, in the middle of the night. It was flying forward and back IYSWIM in parallel lines. My best guess was that it was calibrating something.

Laaalaaaa · 11/05/2020 19:57

I sat and watched a plane for 20 minutes last night that was due to arrive at my local airport. Delighted when it changed course on it’s way to land and flew right over my house. That’s how sad I am right now.

That's one possibility but bearing in mind their target facilities role it could have been doing repetitive runs against air defence assets (either airborne or on the ground) simulating a particular type of target and/or a target indulging in the dark arts of electronic warfare..

Sorry, that was a bit of a rubbish link, try this:

www.aerosociety.com/news/flying-for-the-dark-side/

(I have a former colleague who flies down the back of these things, he is paid to make life difficult for people)

thenightsky · 11/05/2020 21:35

There is a very noisy plane that comes over our house around midnight every night (give or take half an hour). It then comes back around 1.30am and wakes me up. Sounds like a propeller type plane flying low. It shakes the windows. But it never, ever appears on Flight Radar Confused

notimagain · 11/05/2020 21:58

Well...I've heard a Hercules rattles the ridge tiles at night but it wasn't a regular occurrence - If it's something regular then it sounds like a civilian flight..

It's worth bearing in mind that Flightradar doesn't show all civilian traffic all the time , there are holes in it's coverage at low altitude, even around airports, especially the smaller ones ..any chance you are near such an airport?

TheSparklyPussycat · 11/05/2020 22:50

Who would have thought that Durham Tees Valley could be so glamorous? Grin

thenightsky · 12/05/2020 10:30

@notimagain Not near a civilian airport no. I'm in Lincolnshire between a few RAF stations though.

Ursaminor · 12/05/2020 10:55

If you use Virtual Radar just now, you will be able to see a big military exercise going on off the east coast. (Flight Radar doesn't show military planes). The planes are listed on the right side of the screen, and the RAF ones have names like HAVOC / KILL / COMET. There are also US and other NATO planes out there.

Ursaminor · 12/05/2020 11:18

These of you near Chester will have rattling windows - there's a Beluga flying in heading east now.

hoteltango · 15/05/2020 17:47

This afternoon I spotted a Wiltshire Air Ambulance helicopter on Freedar. It's the second time I've seen that one apparently on its way to Heathrow from the Seychelles via Milan. Wink

CherryStoneTree · 19/05/2020 11:11

If helicopters don’t show up on flight radar, does that mean they are military? Or flying royals or something? We have a group of 3 helicopters that seems to fly late at night, fairly low. The first time you can see why people thought UFO’s exist, they were flying in a v shape and sounded like giant drones not helicopters! They never show up on flight radar.

hellsbells99 · 19/05/2020 17:23

The Queens flight reg no ze701 was at Manchester airport today according to my DH.

hoteltango · 19/05/2020 22:34

Cherry - have you tried looking on Freedar? That seems to show more military aircraft than Flightradar.

(I use this link: radar.freedar.uk/VirtualRadar/desktop.html on my laptop.)

That's interesting, hellsbells, I wonder what it could be doing there as none of the royals are flying at the moment.

Powerplant · 19/05/2020 22:37

Ohhh I just got this today and I m hooked I keep trying to astonish my OH with it but he’s obviously not as impressed as I am! It’s so addictive

notimagain · 20/05/2020 08:20

@hoteltango

Re ZE701

I'm pretty sure the days of a dedicated "Queens Flight", only transporting Royals and very high profile VIPs ended some time ago..I think the aircraft are all pooled into a squadron (? no 32) that has a military "day job" such as carrying light freight, ferrying personnel around, and the like..the Royals may get one of the aircraft if they need one..

In short the aircraft seen at Manchester may have been carrying a Royal, a VIP, Forces personnel or freighting PPE....
