notimagain - I vaguely remember reading about that some while ago. It does make sense financially for the RAF to have the most priority for those aircraft rather than the RF.

Did anyone notice a flock of Cessna aircraft pootling around the Sussex South Downs a day or so ago? It was quite strange to see so many of the same type in close proximity. Maybe they all belonged to the same flying club.

If anyone's still here, QY398 Leipzig - Cincinnati has just landed at East Midlands. I wasn't sure if it's one of FR's mis-labelling errors or if it's a genuine divert as it followed a very odd approach path (it's not unusual to see DHL planes going in and out of EMA as they've got a hub there, so they've probably just missed the stop off the route in FR?)

notimagain · 01/06/2020 20:42

Not the most direct routing into EMA was it but now at 1935 GMT the aircraft is shown as being well out over the Atlantic heading west so I guess it was all pretty routine...as you say could just be the FR glitch again.

Just to share my excitement at this lovely Hercules plane flightpath. My family don't understand how exciting this is, so I'm sharing it with people that appreciate such beauty. Grin

An raf flight has just passed over my house, really loud and I've never noticed one before. Flight radar shows it to have taken off from Brize Norton nearly 2 hours ago and it circles Birmingham airport for a while and then flew north west. Does anyone know what it would be doing?

notimagain · 05/08/2020 17:51

Looking at Planefinder it appears there's certainly been a A400M around (and they are noisy) which looks to have been doing a bit of a tour of Midlands, Vale of York and also maybe a few approaches into Humberside...as I type ( 1750 UK time) it's heading back to Brize...if that's the aircraft in question it looks like it doing a mixture of things which probably adds up to nothing more than the crew doing "continuation training" i.e. keeping in practice.

Horsemad · 05/08/2020 19:26

I read that an A400M was doing touch and go locally today. I didn't see or hear it unfortunately. ☹️

Anyone still around? Just been mooching on FR and I've spotted the USAF and RAF planes doing the evacuations from Kabul Sad

The USAF Globemasters have the callsign MOOSE# (various numbers e.g. 29) and the RAF one is NAG91XT. They're shuttling between Kabul and somewhere in the Gulf, I think (probably Oman, I haven't seen any land yet).

FGSWhatNow · 24/08/2021 10:49

There's also an Italian Hurcules in the Gulf of Oman and a couple of Stratotankers too. Lots going on.

notimagain · 24/08/2021 11:02

The majority of the heavy transport stuff is operating into/out of a military airfield in Qatar, some out of Bahrain and some out of the UAE.

FGSWhatNow · 24/08/2021 11:14

Thanks, notimagain, that's interesting. Since I posted I've seen planes that have originated in various places, including Qatar, but I don't think they turn their transponders on until they're already en route so it's difficult to see exactly where they started. Most seem to be doing a track along the Gulf then turning north over Gwadar and Turbat airports in the south of Pakistan.

Doubt it, the Gulf airspace at those altitudes is civilian controlled, with lots of international boundaries, lots of civilian traffic and if people started “going dark” in large numbers ATC would quite rightly go spare.

It’s not a shooting war in that part of the world so transponders need to be on for both anti-collision purpose as well as ATC visibility….I wonder if what you are seeing is FR just loosing track sometimes, maybe the problem you seeing is perhaps due to a lack of coverage at low altitude near some of the military airports?

Anyhow I’ve had a quick look again and for example Moose 21 heading for Kabul now can be tracked right back to it’s origin in Kuwait.

TBH I’m actually more surprised so many of the heavies are visible on flight radar pretty much down to the runway at Kabul.

FGSWhatNow · 24/08/2021 11:57

Thanks again for the insight. I've just watched the RAF NAG91XT land at Kabul, I thought it was going to go round or over-fly at first as it was so high but it seemed to drop down very quickly. Must have been a bit hair-raising for anyone onboard (but I guess they're used to rapid ascents and descents in the military!)
