is there a particular purpose to this or are you plane spotting enthusiasts?

Interesting question...It's not just plane spotters and amateur enthusiasts...FWIW I know there are also some posting here who are (or possibly were Hmm) aviation professionals - they may even have actually appeared on Flight radar etc ..Grin and are now trying to help out answer some of the FAQ's that seem to pop up...

HoppingPavlova · 28/04/2020 14:20

Thank you both, pavlova is it the excitement of seeing different planes? Do you look out for particular models?

No, for me nothing to do with the actual plane as such but more the work that the plane indicates. I like to see where it's going and whether it's destination is probably along any route I had worked and likely scenarios. For example day flight to a remote mining town may indicate industrial accident, vehicular incident etc whereas night flight to a remote community may be more along the lines of general (heart attack etc), vehicular incident, grievous bodily harm etc. It's interesting to see how busy the service is and where the action is, at any given time if nothing better to do. The service stretches over a great majority of the country really due to remote aspect of most of it.

I've flown gliders and light aircraft so that's my interest, especially at the moment when gliding clubs are all closed. I see that they are still allowed to go gliding in Germany, I'm very slightly envious of that.

JemimaTab · 28/04/2020 14:47

There’s a lot of glider activity in southern Sweden too.

MamehaSan · 28/04/2020 21:22

@Handsoffisback I live near an airport and have got used to seeing planes going in and out, and we're also under flight paths for another airport too. I got into Flight Radar as I liked to find out where the planes I'm seeing are going. If you start paying attention you can soon start to see what's "normal", so any unusual activity (eg a plane taking an unusual flight path or at an strange altitude, or even a different type of aircraft) and I'm straight onto the net to find out what's going on! It sort of grew from there really.

I am not jealous....I am not jealous! Grin

My FR24 app won't work! Sad

DameXanaduBramble · 01/05/2020 11:39

I’m absolutely addicted to it, always had an interest in aviation so it’s heaven!

DameXanaduBramble · 01/05/2020 11:40

I like seeing the c-17s, huuuge!

Oldraver · 01/05/2020 11:52

I like to check out whose rattling my windows and see if it matches up with who I can see in the sky

And it's usually C-17's. I've just discovered Freedar which shows more military planes. I've never been able to track B52's so look forward to that

Are B52s visible on the app?

peekaboob · 02/05/2020 16:21

It's so rare to see planes now, but got this one over my house just now 😁

Yesterday, a Chinook flew over my house. I didn't really need to look out the window - they are really noisy!

I looked it up on Freedar. I do like the call signs the RAF apply to their aircraft - that one was called "Inferno". Grin

Celeriacacaca · 07/05/2020 17:00

Does anyone know what the pair of Falcons I see around Middlesbrough frequently are doing - mostly daytime but sometimes at night? They don't appear to be military. Does anyone know please?

Oldraver · 07/05/2020 17:52

@notimagain

I've only just discovered Freedar. B52's never showed up on Flightradar24 so hoping they will show

There was a big black helicopter over the other day that didn't show on either

BarbaraofSeville · 07/05/2020 18:02

Spotted this a little earlier. Like a PP said, there's hardly any planes at the moment and it was low and hence quite loud.

FR indicates that it's still circulating but I haven't seen or heard it in the last hour.

Probably Cobham aviation - target facilities for the military.

Looks like another example of the military using this quiet time to practice approaches of various types into civilian airports.

Blueuggboots · 07/05/2020 18:07

You can go on brize Norton's page and they tell you where they're going to be operating....had a C17 go past 7 times yesterday!! He popped round brize 5-6 times, up to b'ham and did 7 laps...

Red Arrows on Flight Radar 24 now Grin

Triglesoffy · 09/05/2020 12:36

A private Lear Jet has taken off from Bedford aerodrome and Ian heading north. It is currently over Newcastle. Does anyone else think that this could be Prince William off to have a private chat with Charles? I will watch it and see where it lands.

Ursaminor · 09/05/2020 13:06

The Lear Jet has landed at Aberdeen - but it's a German medevac plane. So not Prince William breaking lockdown to nip up to Balmoral!

Borntobeamum · 09/05/2020 13:13

Any ideas why this would happen?!

MulticolourMophead · 09/05/2020 13:17

I've just looked at Freedar, and there's one looking like a spaceship and labelled UFO, model Halfords BMX bike, operator A Boy and an Extraterrestrial Grin

avroroad · 09/05/2020 13:17

That's a survey aircraft.
