Thanks Blobby10 . There's a few different aircraft with similar flight paths today. I've spotted one over North Wales and another over Chester. This is fascinating.

Blobby10 · 16/04/2020 12:07

JadziaSnax beware - its also addictive Grin

GoFiguire · 16/04/2020 12:14

Looks like a tanker doing what tankers do........

BiddyPop · 16/04/2020 13:01

Another Ryanair plane coming up the Irish sea just now from Madrid to Dublin, but also not on scheduled arrivals to the Airport. I wonder is Dublin where they are storing a lot of them?

Blobby10 · 16/04/2020 13:32

SO excited!! Just spotted the Red Arrows (on FR!) heading west over Sheffield!!!!! GrinGrin

We've just heard the red arrow fly over our house in Sheffield. Heading towards Manchester area. Couldn't see it but 'spotted' on Flight Radar.

ChiefClerkDrumknott · 16/04/2020 14:13

The Red Arrow did a rather wobbly figure of eight and was dropping altitude when I took this, but has gone back up again. Manouver practice?

Just dropping in after having my interest piqued yesterday and then posting on a thread about helicopter activity where this thread and the flightradar24 site were linked.

I live in south Manchester and normally see tons of planes overhead, rarely paying much attention to any of them. Yesterday I was in the backyard when one flew over and I was struck by how weird it was to see a plane, and how quickly normal has changed so that any sound beyond birdsongs or kids seems weird to me. I called DH out to look at it and he said it looked military cargo rather than commercial or civilian.

After seeing the Flightradar24 link here on Mumsnet I checked the playback function and it must’ve landed at MCR airport at about 7pm yesterday (no other flights at that time and only a couple today, one commercial flight just did a circuit so must be training or something to do with maintenance?). Various tagged trucks have been to-ing and fro-ing every time I’ve looked, it’s still there now. No info on the plane type but elsewhere on the site it said that’s common with some military flights?

Assume it’s supplies for the North West Nightingale, which is pretty cool. Here are some screenshots, don’t know anyone who might be interested in real life!

I live under the practice area for the Red Arrows! They've been grounded for a while but up again this week. We've missed them. Smile

Once upon a time, many years back they were required to go off "on their own" a certain number of times a month to stay current in the stuff ( simulated engine failures > practice forced landings, practice diversions, instrument approaches, etc etc) that they did''t get to practice when they were dedicating themselves to formation work..

If that requirement still exits maybe that's what the Red Arrow singleton is up to.

ChiefClerkDrumknott · 16/04/2020 14:54

Thanks notimagain that makes sense Smile

The Cessna over Lancashire was carrying out an aerial survey according to the local paper.

notimagain · 16/04/2020 19:12

This plane seems to have overshot maastricht some what..

Looks like the original routing for that flight number was meant to be Maastricht - Shannon - Chicago but it looks like at some point the Maastricht stop was cancelled and it went direct to Shannon.

As of now (1900 UK time) the flight is off the west coast of Ireland en route to Chicago

Blobby10 · 17/04/2020 10:38

Why are there still so many flights coming in from USA, (JFK, Dallas, Miami, LA) Canada (Toronto) Doha, Tokyo etc? and the CityHopper and also flights from Dublin? I thought all these countries were supposed to be shut down except for cargo?

bettybattenburg · 17/04/2020 10:44

They are cargo flights, mostly they arrive in the earlier part of the morning having flown overnight.

notimagain · 17/04/2020 11:55

Basically what Betty said..

I'm certainly aware of what look like passenger flights on FlightRadar etc coming into the UK from the States, China etc actually carrying no passengers (i.e. the cabin is empty) but in the holds and perhaps in the overhead lockers carrying well upwards of 30-35 tonnes of often urgent freight (typically medical supplies).

notimagain · 17/04/2020 12:31

Good as time as any to add..I really don't think the public looking at Flight radar etc are anything like aware of the effort going on behind the scenes to get medical supplies into the UK by air. Typical example -

www.travelmole.com/news_feature.php?news_id=2042228

Volunteer Flight Crew because of the length of the duty day - 7 pilots total, Theory is 3 operate out the flight out whilst the other 4 rest on board... turn around on ground, then the supposedly rested 4 operate as a double crew back, whilst the original 3 rest (to avoid the need to enter China).

Needs special CAA approval to allow limited exemption from the normal fatigue avoidance rules - Very very long day at the office.........

Blobby10 · 17/04/2020 12:56

notimagain thanks for clarifying as I did wonder if that would be it. Just seems so weird having these scheduled flights still coming in as well as the Ryanair ones from Dublin to assorted UK airports. Same is occurring in Europe and of course, USA are still doing loads of city to city flights.

bettybattenburg · 17/04/2020 13:13

I wouldn't be surprised if the Ryanair ones fom Dublin to various UK airports are bringing medical supplies to the UK as there have been quite a few Aer Lingus flights into Dublin from China which have been bringing in supplies from China.

That said I haven't noticed any China-Dublin flights recently though I haven't needed to check.
