Anyone want to help me decipher the name of my house? [pic included]

Hello all,

I’ve lived in my house over a year and only a few days ago I noticed that the concrete pillar outside our house has worn letters on it.

I’m very curious as to what they say, but try as I might, I can’t make out the word.

Any suggestions?

Limestone? That’s what it looks like to me anyway.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 12/01/2020 13:38

Emistone

museumum · 12/01/2020 13:39

Cranston I thought.

FloreanFortescue · 12/01/2020 13:42

Chetstone?

BikeRunSki · 12/01/2020 13:42

See if you can find it on Old Maps. At large scales, houses are often named. You just need the postcode to get the right map.

BlouseAndSkirt · 12/01/2020 13:42

CHRISTONI.

Which is unlikely, unless it was one of those couples who combine names for the house, like Bevron or Hilkeith or something.

Just Googled and it's an American footballer!

I suspect he was a 1930s plasterer from South London. With a fondness for feline arses.

GG20 · 12/01/2020 13:45

Looks like Chitstone to me, but I've never head of that as a name before!

There's definitely a letter after the N though - only visible if you view the full image rather than the thumbnail.

BillHadersNewWife · 12/01/2020 13:46

Soup I hope so! That's much better!

ChristmasBaubles · 12/01/2020 13:48

I think Comstone

WatcherintheRye · 12/01/2020 13:48

Another vote for CHILSTONE.

scarbados · 12/01/2020 13:49

Camstone

Bobkitten · 12/01/2020 13:50

@SoupDragon Grin I’d have been thrilled to find that! Would love to see a pic of the cat’s arse (never thought I’d type that today).

I’ve had another look but it’s been wet today, so it’s even harder to see. The first pic I took when dark and shining a torch from one side. The pic is took just now is awful - you can see why I didn’t notice!

Looking at it, I do think Chilstone looks like a strong possibility.

I see CHILSTON and then another letter on the end possibly and I but an E would make more sense.

Bobkitten · 12/01/2020 13:51

Tried googling my address - no luck so far. Going to look at Old Maps now!

WatcherintheRye · 12/01/2020 13:52

How old is your house, op?

Barneythedinosaur · 12/01/2020 13:53

Ooh actually the second picture looks much more like a H than an A

bobsyourauntie · 12/01/2020 13:54

I think it is definitely CH __STON , possibly with an E at the end, . Have you tried googling different things with your postcode? It should come up somewhere on something.

2MapleMuffins · 12/01/2020 13:54

go and trace it with your fingers and while yoiur eyes are shut?

I am desperate to know now!

PickwickThePlockingDodo · 12/01/2020 13:55

Seeing the latest photo, the first two letters are definitely CH

PostNotInHaste · 12/01/2020 13:55

I was on Camstone but think am now Team Chilstone with second picture

CassandraCross · 12/01/2020 13:58

Have you looked at the Deeds for names of previous owners? It might be the surname of the people who owned it first?

PostNotInHaste · 12/01/2020 13:59

Please you try rubbing it with a crayon and paper and see what happens?!
