Anyone want to help me decipher the name of my house? [pic included]

Hello all,

I’ve lived in my house over a year and only a few days ago I noticed that the concrete pillar outside our house has worn letters on it.

I’m very curious as to what they say, but try as I might, I can’t make out the word.

Any suggestions?

Find out if there is a local history society, there could be records somewhere.

CAMSTONE

SoupDragon · 12/01/2020 13:24

It's possible the land registry entry might tell you.

SilentBob · 12/01/2020 13:24

I think it was owned by Charles and Antonia and they rested their own name for the house- the quite classy Chaztoni.

SilentBob · 12/01/2020 13:25

*created their own name

NC4Now · 12/01/2020 13:25

Coniston

EuphorbiaHemlockthe1st · 12/01/2020 13:25

On second thoughts I don't think the second letter can be an A as it is straight up and down.

CHILSTONE

mogtheexcellent · 12/01/2020 13:25

Concrete or coade stone is fine for 1930s.

I'm an archaeologist and we use raking light to decipher worn out lettering. Wait till dusk and shine a torch one direction on the side of the inscription. Then shine from the other side.

Time40 · 12/01/2020 13:27

It's definitely an E at the end. I can see it very clearly.

peridito · 12/01/2020 13:28

Good idea about 1939 census Bobkitten .

Happy to have a look OP if you want to PM me the address .

edwardcullensotherwoman · 12/01/2020 13:28

Looks like camsioni to me, which is welsh for wrongdoing. But that seems an odd name for a house..

Apolloanddaphne · 12/01/2020 13:28

Maybe Collstone?

SaskiaRembrandt · 12/01/2020 13:30

I sharpened the image, it looks like Camstone

FenellaVelour · 12/01/2020 13:30

I can see an E at the end too, worn but there.
So ends with “stone”

2MapleMuffins · 12/01/2020 13:30

was it not on the deeds when you bought it? But Land registry, for £3 will show you the title.

Otherwise yes, google, or older members in the village.

Or do what mog says as that sounds alot more interesting and fun as a technique than google!

BillHadersNewWife · 12/01/2020 13:31

Surely that second letter is an M. The first is an I.

The last three are O N I.

Definitely do the rubbing thing OP. That always works.

SoupDragon · 12/01/2020 13:31

CHITSTONE is a possibility but I am rooting for CHAZTONI.

FenellaVelour · 12/01/2020 13:32

I’d guess Chilstone. The bottom of the S has worn off so I think the letter before it is L which has worn in the same way.

But i love stuff like this. We moved an ancient plant pot from the side of our house to discover initials engraved into the brickwork. That triggered research and we discovered the initials were the same as the children of the man who built the house in the 1800s!

SoupDragon · 12/01/2020 13:33

Is there a second pillar on the other side that says HOUSE?

SoupDragon · 12/01/2020 13:35

My house has "Speedy Williams", the year 1934 and a cartoon of a cats arse etched into the cement on the chimney breast in the loft 😂 A posh house name would have been a nicer find .

LeekMunchingSheepShagger · 12/01/2020 13:36

Looks like callstone to me

minniemoll · 12/01/2020 13:36

I'm thinking Comstone, which is the name of a fell near Hawkshead in the Lake District.

BillHadersNewWife · 12/01/2020 13:36

Soup Fantastic! I would love to know who Speedy Williams was!

BillHadersNewWife · 12/01/2020 13:37

Oh. Just Googled and it's an American footballer!
